2014 Alwinton Two-Day Trial

bedlington motor clubBedlington Motor Club staged the 4th edition of the Alwinton Two Day last weekend. The trial is run in the hills and foresty surrounding the small village in the Cheviot Hills and is based at the Clennel Hall Country House and Hotel.  The Trial attracted entries from the home North East Centre, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Sussex and Scotland. Albert Arana also flew in from Barcelona to take part having arranged the loan of a bike from visiting Scot Iain Shankie.  Thankfully for his fellow competitors Albert brought the Spanish sunshine with him and his friend and trial organiser Joan Sanllehy Tortajada who observed both days.

Club members had worked hard since the completion of last years trial securing additional land and over 20 new sections were used over the weekend. Each day had a different single lap of approximately 25 off road miles including 30 sections. The dry weather meant some sections rode slightly easier than intended but there was a broad range of ability to cater for and everybody seemed happy with the event.

The Expert Course was dominated by Ossa riders with local prospect Billy Bolt taking the premier award from Michael Phillipson by a margin of 5 marks over the two days. Michael Lee on a Sherco snatched third place from Colin Ward riding a four stroke Beta on the second day, both riders being tied on 15 marks after day one. Despite an easy start to the trial both Bolt and Phillipson incurred fives in the first five sections on Saturday. Bolt however was the only rider to see the ends cards at section 27 on Saturday with every other rider incurring a five. Phillipson incurred another five on Sunday morning on a section which saw many cleans and this gave Bolt breathing space for the rest of the day.

The Clubman course was won by Eddie Aitkin who dropped 12 marks, one less than fellow County Durham resident Carl Shaw. Former national trial winner Glen Scholey made a welcome appearance at the event and took third place on a very tidy air cooled Yamaha.

The easy course honours were taken by Allister Stewart who completed the weekend for just 9 marks. Former World Round competitor (in the 1970’s !) Ray Crinson got round for 13 marks on his newly acquired four stroke Beta and was eight marks ahead of Nigel Greenwood on his immaculate TLR 250 Honda. Nigel was also riding for the first time having been nagged into it by a certain club member.
