2014 Montesa Model Launch

Ztc 7293In the scond of two new model launches today, Montesa unveiled their much-anticipated new bike.Ever since its first release, the Montesa Cota 4RT model started a revolution in the world of trial, a discipline dominated completely by the mechanics of 2 stroke engines. These power plants are compact and easy to use, however, their value was diminished because of the high level of pollution emissions they caused. Such is the case, that advancing the emissions standards that were set to begin in 2006, Montesa, with the collaboration of Honda Motor Co., developed the Montesa Cota 4RT, an advanced trial motorcycle equipped with a revolutionary and compact 4 stroke and 4 valve engine with a PGM‐FI electronic fuel injection, the results of this being a highly efficient machine with a low level of emission pollution and a significant value in power and torque.

The chassis also underwent a big change, with the adoption of a light aluminum frame and the high quality SHOWA suspensions, especially the advanced design of the rear suspension. Ever since the beginning, the performance of the 250cc engine has amazed for its capability to compete, in theory, with the superior 2 stroke engines with a similar displacement.

The Montesa Cota 4RT was recognized because of its exclusive technological features, but also because it was a high quality model and one of the uttermost liability, aspects that were clearly valued by the clients of the brand. Even so, as years went by, the preference of trial fans has changed, much like the economic global situation has. This is important considering that in the scale of values of the grand majority of trial enthusiasts the price is a determinant factor when deciding to buy a motorcycle.

Development Concept

Based on the trial enthusiast’s new priorities, Montesa Honda has developed the brand new Montesa Cota, one that maintains its original identity traits: an advanced 4stroke PGM‐FI technology and a light aluminum frame. At the same time, to increase its capability to compete against the popular 2stroke engines, the development team incorporated a new power plant that increases the motorcycle’s displacement to 260cc for better performance.

To fulfill the expectations and needs of our current customers, Montesa is introducing to the market two new versions of the Cota 4RT model: the 4RT260 and the Race Replica, with the aim to reach a wider range of customers.

Cota 4RT260: A high quality model developed in close participation with the Repsol Montesa Honda Trial team with an increased performance, it proves to be an economic option as good as motorcycles with a 2stroke engine technology.

Cota Race Replica: For the more demanding customers that want a highest quality model, the Cota Race Replica offers the exclusiveness of its superior equipment and being able to ride a motorcycle that is mastering all the world competitions: the Montesa Cota 4RT, ridden by both the riders of the Repsol Montesa Honda, Toni Bou and Takahisa Fujinami.

Much like its predecessors, the production of these two versions of the Cota 4RT will take place in the modern Montesa Honda facilities, located in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, in Barcelona assuring that the quality standards always found in the model Cota 4RT are preserved.

Design and Style

Both versions of the new Cota 4RT, the 4RT260 and the Race Replica, transmit a modern and fluid style with a new design of the fuel tank, a lot more slender and compact but keeping enough capacity to enjoy a long trial recreation day. The new rear mud guard is also designed to match the slender look of the fuel tank giving the motorcycle a more stylish overall look.

Whilst the Race Replica version inherits the new powerful image of the motorcycle of the World Champion, the 4RT260 goes back to the original red color of Montesa’s emblematic classic Cota models. A red that is also present in the wheel hubs creating a perfect combination with the beautifully painted black anodized rims.

The 4RT models have always been known for their great quality finish and their excellent components that maintain their properties intact throughout out the years. This is something we have maintained in the new Cota models with the incorporation of the highest quality style and stickers.

Engine

Keeping the compact thermodynamic base of the Montesa Cota 4RT, the already advanced 4 stroke engine has undergone various changes, among them the increase of engine displacement to 260cc. Not only engine displacement has increased, also, wanting to achieve the best balance of performance given the change, the new 260 engine uses a newly resigned camshaft to adjust the distribution diagrams for a better response from the engine at any range of rpm. Also, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) incorporates a new injection and ignition map to optimize the changes made on the engine’s thermodynamics. With the new mapping the new Cota achieves better traction capacity more especially at non favourable terrains while keeping constant throttle or even at more critical situations like at closing and opening the throttle when performing a trial section. With this feature the bike is more efficient and rider gets better feedback which at the end results in better control.

All these changes translate into a better performance. The power plant now stands out because of  its higher top range as well as its improved response at low range in order to get a better rider’s feel of the engine. The engine is now more flexible and more user friendly at any range of rpm, providing higher torque figures specially from mid to top range. Another highlighted feature worth noticing is the perfect connection between the throttle control and the rear traction, an aspect of vital importance in trial, for which a precise operation of the Electronic Fuel Injection System PGM‐FI is essential.

Finally, another important improvement is the noticeable reduction of the engine brake, a characteristic of the 4stroke engines that has been intelligently solved by the Honda engineers by incorporating a crankcase decompressing system. Through this system, when closing the throttle, the engine brake is minimized making the motorcycle feel more light and easy to control. With the application of all these solutions, the Cota 4RT faces all the more critical zones with more power and more control for the rider.

Chassis

The new Cota 4RT260 and Race Replica are using a light aluminum frame and swingarm that gives great performance and reliability. In the Race Replica model, the frame and swingarm present the same anodized black color as the machines of the Team Repsol Montesa Honda. However in the 4RT260 version both components present a formidable polished aluminum finish. A treatment that allows the visualization of the beauty of the lines and the perfection of the various welding seams that proves the high quality of the model.

Another aspect that has been improved is the adoption of new pegs. Now they are wider, which allows the rider to have more command and control of the motorcycle. On the other hand, being wider, they accumulate less dirt and provide more grip. Also, the new pegs are adjustable by a simple change of adaptors which allows the pilot to adjust his position forwards or backwards improving the comfort and control of the machine.

Suspensions

Race Replica: The model maintains the prestigious and of the highest quality front and rear SHOWA suspensions, that continue being a referent in trial. Cota 4RT260: Conscious that not all the trial enthusiasts need the excellence and the supreme quality of the Showa suspensions used in the Race Replica, the Cota 4RT260 has a new set of suspensions that are also of high quality but more affordable. The front suspension is signed by TECH, whilst the rear one has a light and multi adjustable R16V monoshock. Both manufacturers have a lot of experience and provide suspensions for various trial model manufacturers. However, in this case, both engineers of Tech and R16V and Montesa Honda’s experienced test rider, Amós Bilbao, collaborated closely dedicating themselves during days to the testing the suspensions in different trial zones looking for the most appropriate settings for a machine with the Cota 4RT260s characteristics.

As a result the Cota 4RT260 presents a set of very efficient suspensions that give a lighter feel. With these suspensions, the Cota 4RT260 is able to absorb the irregularities of the terrain easily and its adjustability gives the rider the option to set them on a more Racing setting or one that offers more retention and comfort. Programmable ECU HRC If one of the advantages given by the adoption of the PGM‐FI Electronic Fuel Injection system is the auto‐adjustment of the carburetion to the different meteorological conditions, the more demanding riders will be able to vary the ignition and fueling maps through an optional HRC kit and the help of a laptop.

The kit is offered as optional equipment for racing and is comprised of: Throttle body and ECU, Interface and CD‐ROM

More New Features

Another special feature of both models of the Cota is the adoption of the new set of brakes signed by Braktec. The brake master cylinder is now more compact and light which makes for better performance. Specifically the set of brakes offers better stopping power and more precise feeling. In the same area, the brake lines and their routing are also new, being now more integrated and creating a more compact assembly.

At the same time, the clutch system keeps its configuration with hydraulic operation and relies on a new master cylinder clutch, produced by Braktec, which is lighter and more compact giving a more precise action.

High Quality Equipment

Whilst the main changes center on the engine, body and suspension (Cota 4RT260), the model has also been deeply updated by the adoption of 70 new components. Even with the numerous changes, both models maintain they high quality equipment, like the advanced electrical system without battery which power,  among others, the ignition system and the ignition coil. It also highlights the use of a bank angle sensor which switches off the ignition when the motorcycle is tilt to one side more than 65º for a fraction of time of 7 seconds. With this device, the potential risk exposure for the rider is significantly reduced while protecting the engine, especially in situations in which the motor could remain accelerated.

The wheel rims keep their design of 32 radius and the rear one the innovative system that incorporates central radius adjustment allowing a significant weight reduction, an easy maintenance and the mount of Tubeless tyres, which again reduces the weight of the motorcycle.
