Macclesfield Kelcoat Championship Round 1

It was back to the popular Rough Heys Quarry for first round of the Kelcoat championship. The setting out team had to give up a days work on the Friday to avoid the shooting club event on the Saturday. It was well worth the effort as the 100 plus entry had a cracking day. Usually the lads always spot a Yeti or big foot when setting out but for the first time in many trials at this venue, this strange shy retiring creature with a passion for long sections and hill climbs was mysteriously missing.

 

As Kelcoat sponsors this trial and the four other rounds of the championship it was very fitting that the best performance overall was by their sponsored rider, Sam Yeomans (Gas Gas). Sam had a close battle with Thomas Minta (Sherco) in what for these two was a low scoring trial with the outcome really decided on section 10. Both riders 5 this section on the first lap as did all the expert riders, a slight tweak for the second lap made the section far more viable. Sam went on the record just one more dab here for a total of 6 whilst Thomas had 2 dabs here and one more on the slippery climbs and turns of section 3 for a total of 8. Both lads came out with a trophy Sam Premier Youth and Thomas with Premier Expert .

 

The results on the inter and middle route have prompted the club to consider organising a trolley dash through the local trophy shop for one family instead of the normal method of ordering trophies . The Hipwell lads were in full factory mode as not only did Dad (Kev)take the best O/40+ award, son Scott was best Youth B with a very respectable score of 20 on the middle route and Uncle Andy Hipwell was best O/50 on his Yamaha twinshock with an impressive score of just 11.Well done to the Hipwell family.

 

An even more impressive ride( but one anybody who sees him ride or sees the results from the clubman national trials would not be that surprised about) was that of Congleton rider Rob Bowyer on his Triumph Twin who lost just 4 marks on a far from easy middle route.
