Isle of Wight MCC Frank Pragnell Cup Trial

isle of wight mccBembridge Down hosted the eighth round of the IOW MCC’s winter Championship - the Frank Pragnell Cup. The Club would like to thank Rob and John Taylor for the use of this brilliant venue. The course setters Andy Scot-Jackson and Stuart Gummer set a blinding trial – now we always appreciate people giving up their time to set the sections but today’s course came straight out of the top drawer – well done guys. Thanks also to Ross Haydon and Richard Crickmore for the E route and all those that helped clear up afterwards.

Will West’s performance probably also came out of that same ‘top drawer’ Will finished the trial dropping a miserly two marks and despite riding unopposed in the Expert class, it would be difficult to imagine anyone bettering his score. Nick Symes went round for a loss of just three marks to take the Twinshock class – good effort by both riders.

Rory Stephens took the Intermediate Class convincingly from Mike Taylor in second and brother Geoff in third. This was Rory’s first time out since the Wight Two Day trial back in April. Course setters Stuart Gummer and Andy Scott-Jackson fought it out in the Clubman class – It was Stuart who cruised to another ten Championship points.

The Novice class was won by the improving Brian Brockwell with another solid performance. Paul Kent had to settle for second, although Paul rode most of the trial with only his front brake, not ideal considering the steep climbs and descents that Bembridge always presents us with! Jamie Mather in his first outing this year finished in a creditable third place.

Phil Silvester is definitely on a roll taking another win in the Adult Beginner’s – his Sherco is certainly out performing his dodgy old Beta! Harvey Grieve rode really well to take the Youth Beginner class win. The E route riders, Alfie Haydon and Harrison Crickmore fought it out over seven sections (section seven proving to be too difficult to include an E route) In the closest contest of the day it was Alfie who just did enough, by one mark, to take the win.

The next Club trial is scheduled for Sunday 25th October at Nodewell Farm, Totland, the Matt Russell Memorial trial. Your course setter for this event is, as always, Ross Haydon. We look forward to seeing a good turnout!
