Yorks Classic Championship Round 6

yorkshire classic mccEmmotts Farm is now firmly established as one the more enjoyable venues on the Yorkshire Classic circuit. With its long winding stream this year providing all the 10 sections, the 44 riders were not disappointed again this year.

The harder than usual premier route took marks from everybody with John Maxfield taking his Cub to top honours with a loss of eight marks, three ahead of his main Class rival Tony Calvert. The Clubman route was a different kettle of fish and seven riders finished in single figures with Thirsk’s Max Clift on his C15 recording the only clean ride of the day. Craig Haworth riding the Clubman route for a change to nurse a previous event’s injury was 1 mark further back on his James.

The rocks that lay in the stream had gained an evil layer of slime during the past year and early riders were punished for taking the plunge. Section one by the bridge set the mid standard for the day. Gascoigne suffered an early dab and Keith Hobson, back on the Premier route, wandered too close to the hawthorn tree and slid to a halt on the big rocks. Section 3 turned out to be the biggest mark taker for the clubman. As they headed over the rocks, a steep exit onto the bank to avoid a rocky cleft took marks from the majority. The next section was to prove Calvert’s downfall as he missed a partially hidden flag to concede a five that lost him the overall win.

The toughest sections were yet to come with the old deep gully at section 8 taking maximum concentration to clear the big rocks. It was here where Maxfield took a five on the easier part as he was ready to head for the exit. Only Calvert was penalty free on this one and Chris Gascoigne (Francis Barnett) lost half of his final total of 16. The clubmen avoided the gully but a sharp climb caught many as it cut up towards the end. However the penultimate section had the top riders worried. Maxfield was the first to clear the fearsome jumble of rocks before the right turn to the exit and was the only rider to stay clear on all four visits. Calvert needed two dabs as the easier clubman route was enjoyed by most.
