  1. What league is that? Ridiculously overpriced!
  2. What constitutes a "trials bike" such that there is criteria by which you can eliminate it? In other words, is the Scorpa T-Ride eligible to run with the MX & Enduro bikes? Simply because it has a seat? What about a Scorpa LongRide, or a Montesa fitted with a trail riding seat kit? Not sure what the basis is for allowing versus eliminating a bike. If all it takes is adding a simple sub-frame and something that resembles a seat, then some fun could be had here!
  3. If using a fully synthetic oil, you can very safely run a 60:1 ratio.
  4. Most of my riding ranges from the Houston area, up through central Texas, to the panhandle. About the biggest altitude change my bikes sees, is going up the ramp into the back of my truck! I have talked to Ron about the springs, in an effort to get my hands on a green one (1' to 1,000'). Do you have any idea where the stock spring falls, in the range of springs, regarding altitude? - Darrell

    Yea, a real "looser"!

  7. Several things really. But, after six Scorpa in a row, I was ready to try something different. Friends, with some time on one of the '07 Beta 4-Strokes, indicated how pleased they were with the bike, how light it was, how smooth it was, quiet, etc. So, already having 4-stroke experience with two Scorpa, I am a total 4-stroke convert, so I figured I would give the Beta a shot. I have had my Beta for about 3 weeks now, but only had two real all day outings on it (besides my driveway and ditches). So far, I am VERY pleased with the bike. The only question is going to be durability, given the new engine design. But if my experience with the engine so far is any indicator, then I am blown away. It is still tight, and breaking in, but performs great! Starts easy, runs smooth, clutch is great, etc.
  8. Gotta love those chain protectors! Not bad if it is "home brewed", but pretty sad if that is a factory effort.
  9. OK, now it is worse! Free Rider 2 (a MUCH enhanced version) is now online. Link: http://www.onemorelevel.com/games.php?game=622
  10. In general, a bike is only as good as it's owner. If you treat you bike like crap, you will have a piece of crap bike. If instead, you take care of it, wash it, maintain it, etc. it will tend to payback. If you hand wash and detail your bike, after every ride (or at least every other ride) you will see the little things on the bike that need attention. A bolt that is loose, a spoke that needs tightening, an engine case, or seal, etc. that appears to be leaking. Change the oil, clean the filter, etc. you will find that a trials bike is a low cost toy, compared to other forms of motorsports. Most of the guys you hear complaining on here probably put their bike away filthy, and then pull it out just like that, for the next ride. Can't tell you how many broken bikes I have seen on the loop, with the guy ranting and raving about what a piece of junk it is, and you can just look at the bike an tell that this is probably the first time the guy has stopped to look close at the bike, since the last time it broke.
  11. Not exactly. Vertical is the position you want to leave the lever, when riding. This enables the automatic fuel petcock to function. When the engine is running, fuel flows. When you kill the engine, the petcock snaps shut, and stops fuel flow. If you listen, when you kill the engine, you can hear it snap shut. At least mine does! Fliping the lever back is NOT off. It is instead full ON, bypassing the automatic ON/OFF function of the petcock. This position is to only be used when you are trying to start the bike, and feel that the float bowl is empty. Say for example, you crash and drop the bike on it's side. The engine stalls, and the automatic petcock snaps shut, stopping fuel flow. But, because the bike is on its side, fuel continues to run out of the float bowl, via the vent hose. Now, you pick up the bike, and can't start it because you have no fuel, and the petcock is still closed. Flipping the little lever bypasses the auto function, and fills up the bowl again. Once started, flip the lever back to it normal (vertical) position, to return to automatic mode.

  13. In many postings I see, mostly from folks in the UK, bikes are looked down upon based upon how hard it is to get to the carburator. This is generally in reference to how hard it is to "clean the carb". Then, in this posting, I see where you friend's 2008 Rev3 needed it's carb cleaned. A brand new bike needs it's carb cleaned? What is it that you guys do to make a bike need its carb cleaned so much? Other then when restoring a vintage bike, or such, I never have to clean a carburator. Not on a modern bike, and certainly not on a new 2008 bike. Unless you leave a bike sitting for a year, and let the gas go bad and gum things up, why would your carb need cleaning? I mean the way most of these posting read, you should never own a Beta or a Scorpa, because it is too difficult to do your weekly carb cleaning. What gives with all the carb work?
  14. Agree completely. The prices paid for trials gear is absurd. I have been wearing Moose Qualifier (their enduro stuff) gear for years now. Take a look at this link: http://www.rockymoto.com/moose_07_qualifier_a_page.htm On sale, at the moment, you can get a pair of pants for $35.00 and a jersey for $14.00 I ordered two pairs of pants, two jerseys, paid tax, and shipping, for less than you typically pay for one pair of trials pants. Even after paying the shipping from the US to the UK, you would still come out like a bandit.
  15. Not sure when you last checked the FIM website, but now the 2008 list shows Dougie on Montesa.
  16. I would not go to any of that effort, until you tried a Scorpa SY175F. Yest it is the TTR 125 engine, but punched to 143cc. Not a fire breathing monster, but far from gutless. All the characteristics of a trials bike, but you can add the seat kit, which is still close enough to the ground for her. If you wanted to go all out, the new SY200F is punched to 163cc, but they are new for this year, and you probably wouldn't find a used one. The engine already has all the mounts for an electric start, if you find she can't kick it over. But, I can't imagine she would have a problem, since the kickstart level is longer than a normal trials bike, and it is low enough to the ground that she could get some leverage.
  17. Not at all. At least in comparison to the Scorpa. I have owned both the SY175F and SY250F, both of which were VERY cold blooded. When starting, you would have to hold the handlebar mounted choke lever open for many minutes, and then SLOWLY start easing off on it, a little at a time, over several more minutes, until finally returning to the normal position. Bad part was that you had to be with the bike, interacting with the choke lever, the whole time. And all of that was just to get them to settle down to an idle. They still were not ready to ride. My 08 Beta Rev 4-T is at the opposite end of the spectrum. You pull out the choke knob, start the bike, and then it immediatly wants to be off choke. There are two detent positions, on the choke. If you click it in one notch, it will warm up for a moment before wanting to be totally off choke. If you instead stay with the bike 30 seconds, to a minute, letting it warm, then it is happy to be taken off choke completely. It will then sit and idle by itself, warming up, while you gather your riding gear. Several of my riding buddies have Montesa 4RT. And while the fuel injection does let them start up and settle to an idle very easy, none of them like to be ridden cold, any more than the Beta or Scorpa. Besides, ALL 4-Strokes should be allowed to warm up well, and get the oil moving, before being ridden. The ability to "ride them virtually straight off a cold start up" would not be a good thing, even if possible.

    2008 Rev 3 Chain

My 2008 Rev-4T arrived with a hole in it, right out of the crate. I suppose created from just rolling around the factory. Obviously a problem that Beta has no intention of fixing, if it has been going on this long. But, if that is the worst problem I have with the bike, that will be OK by me. The chain will streatch by itself in no time anyway.
  19. A year or so ago, this fully vs semi debate was circulating. Several folks offered that they had been told by "Expert X, Y or Z" that trials engines don't turn enough RPM, or endure enough stress, to "need" or "burn" fully synthetic. Despite that, I have only met one person, over the years, that ran semi instead of full synthetic. Regardless of whether the bike was modern or vintage.
  20. Very important piece of advice! Un-doing bad habits is a lot worse than just learning them right the first time. Riding by yourself, it is easy to get very good at doing things the wrong way. Then, one day, you wonder why you are not getting any better as a rider, and it is because you are trying to build on a bad foundation.
  21. You rode Don Hubbard's then. He and I have been back and forth, in emails, discussing the fine points of the bikes. I believe that his, and mine, are the only 08 models in Texas. Danny, at MotoMex, has one of the two 07 models for sale, at a discounted price, since it is used. If you interested, you might go that route, and spend a little less.
  22. Double "D'OH" because the Beta is the right choice! After so many years on Scorpa, it was tough to consider changing brands. I loved all my Scorpa, and they are great bikes. But, when it comes to the 4-stroke, my SY250F wasn't in the same league as my new Beta Rev-4T. Smaller, lighter, better power, better handling, better turning radius, better build quality, better clutch action, etc. The only complaint I have about the bike is the horrid ratchet noise the kickstarter makes, until you get your foot off the lever, after the engine starts. You kick the bike, it fires up, and you swear parts are about to fly out of the engine. Then, you let the kickstart lever return to it's normal position, and all is well.
  23. Thanks. So far, so good. Spent the evening getting all the decals on, primping and polishing, adjusting and tweaking, etc. All the while riding for a bit, letting it cool, riding a bit, letting it cool, etc. When breaking in a new engine, especially a 4-stroke, I like to let them cycle through several times, like that, so things seat in well. So far, I am blown away by the bike, both mechanically and cosmetically. The first time I started it, I made the newbie mistake of not realising the choke had two detent positions. I only pushed it in one click, so the warmer the engine got, the worse it ran. I was thinking, "Oh no, I got a dog!" But, I remembered reading about someone else that did that, and quickly figured out my error. Pushed the knob in all the way, and she snapped to life. All evening, she started like a champ, whether hot or cold. Not sure what the "hot start" button is for, but maybe someday I will need it. For now, it is a one kick proposition, and even then it is less of a kick, and more of a "just push it through" the stroke. I had always taken great pride in how tight my Scorpa would turn, but this thing is amazing! I am not a hopper, so I must rely on turning skills. Much of the area we ride, in Texas, is tight and technical stuff. All indications are that this thing will be a star in those condition. I have a couple of seams in my driveway, that I use as marker boundries, for turning practice. The Beta will easily turn 6 inches tighter that what I could do on the Scorpa. And, that is on a brand new bike, that I am not used to yet, and which is still tight from not being broken in. Can't wait till the engine loosens up some, the clutch settles in, and the brakes seat in good. Looks like our weather will be good tomorrow, and I will have a chance to get it out in the woods. 24. Yes, the delivery is scheduled for tomorrow! Once the driver drops mine off, he is headed to Austin to drop off another, for a riding buddy there. I am not aware of anymore, out of the first batch of 4-strokes, coming to Texas. I have not owned a Beta since 1999, so I am anxious to have one again. Especially the 4-stroke. I have had a Scorpa SY175F (143cc) and SY250F, so am well adjusted to the 4-stroke. Can't wait to see how well Beta has pulled it off. Expectations are high, but I am confident that they will be met, and probably exceeded. - Darrell
