    Can anyone tell me the source of the twin leading shoe brake ( " from an early crosser " ) on Tim Wheelers bike.
  4. Depends what you start with - a runner, or a box of bits, and what is your end goal. A runner Bultaco M199A in Oz is about $1500 plus. In lots of cases, you could get away with a tart-up of 2 tyres, chain,sprockets and ordinary shocks for $1,000 Oz. Add another $300 for Falcons. So for a reliable bike your price is $2800 Oz. Labour costs are down to you, thats part of the fun. Old twinshocks that are runners, regardless of condition and equipment, seem to start at around $1000 in Oz. However, the fun really starts if you are serious about your kit. I replaced the front rim, re-spoked the back rim, new chain & sprockets, Sherco ignition, blueprinted motor, new seat, new airbox system, Keihn carby, new bars, re-furbished brakes, new cables, German clutch kit, re-chromed fork tubes, new swingarm, re-packed exhaust system and lots ( did I say lots ) of elbow grease & time. I could tell you what that lot cost, but I would have to kill you because you would tell my wife. I will say the motor rebuild was $1200 Oz, but that included new crank. Why did I do it -because I can now afford it, and I love it. I wanted a M199A in 1979, but we had just had our second child on one wage, and the answer was NO ! No sense of prioities. Could I recoup ALL of that. Maybe, but if I was compus mentus at the time of sale, I would probably put the old bits I could back on & sell the bits on Ebay Will I depart with it-not if I have anything to do with it ! I love it, it`s unique,
  5. Sorry, but my eyesight has gone the way of my riding ability-I can`t see enough detail. My computer is no help, can`t get a decent enlarged image. I wonder if we could impose on you just a little more and ask you to take an up-close digital image of the footpeg area, please. A little more on the frame shortening exercise - am I correct in assuming it was done by shotering the top frame rail & front down tube. Does anyone have a diagram. You see, I happen to have a SPARE 199a frame, and access to good machine shops
  6. Can I verify that specification You mount the footrests DOWN 20millimetres to 30 millimetres ? Do you move them REARWARDS too? By the way, I have had a set of pegs made up which are the same as the current Sherco footpegs, but they will fit the M199a original mounts

  9. Hey Diggler. I always thought the 199A , as distinct to the 199(Red tank model ) already had the extra 2 inches ( top and bottom ) as standard. I have a letter from Reg May re my old 199 showing how to do this mod on the 199, written about 1980. On that subject, did the 199B have the same pipe length as the 199A DabDab

  12. Nice one, Big John. But do you know the provenance of that shirt. Vic Allen toured Australia in 1975 with Suzuki works rider Gaston Rahier to race in an international MX series. Vic was primarily sponsored by the then Victorian Bultaco distributor Bert Flood Motorcycles, with limited help from the other state Bultaco distributors. Bert Flood provided fully set-up 125cc and 250cc Pursangs for Vic. Incidentally, Vic was a sparkie by trade and did a bit of electrical wiring in the Bert Flood premises in Boxhill, Melbourne. He was a great bloke. Bert Flood was and still is a legend in Australian motorcycle racing. In addition to being a tuner extrordinaire, Bert contributed two sons who dominated at the top level of MX and other motorcycle sports in the 70s and 80s - Trevor and Gary Flood. Both were mechanically gifted as well as being top racers, and Gary raced professional speedway in 1971 at Crewe in your UK. Bert is now in his 70s. His current interests involve putting souped-up Rotax motors in everything from helicopters to ultra-light aircraft. He still tunes the odd Bulty including the Bultaco TSS racers ridden in classic road racing by Ginger Molloy here in Oz and NZ. That's a great piece of Australian history you hold there Big John and if you ever want to sell it, send me an email. Dab Dab
  13. Intersting to note that Big Mart`s bike sports the factory modification favoured by Schrieber - the early model airbox ( M158 I think ) which breathed better apparently
  14. You are correct-always the problem. If you are in Europe, I suggest you look for someone who wrecks Italian bikes as the gear box, ignition and motor cases etc were all taken from ( I think ) a Mineralli of the the time, with a copy of the Sherpa Barrel & head grafted on top Otherwise, find a good machine shop Good luck !!!

    I keep seeing references to WES exhausts. Can anyone provide some details please. Where are they made, who sells them, what are they made of and whats the quality like. Oh, and do they make one for the M199A DabDab Australia
  16. Thanks David. You know I was more excited about getting the Jumbo than I was about getting the O5 Beta. Oh I love the seat. Sure the Beta was nice, but I can get one of them any old time. Twinshock is much better because I can have two (or three.....or ten) . re the KTM....nope, never, still dedicated to the cause. In fact I remain hopeful in the face of clear hopelessness. Apparently KTM only made two specials for Walter luft to ride. Which means I have two chances I even considered cutting up an MXer frame and fabricating the rest, but the ozKTM crowd threatened to lynch me . Anyway, see you at the twinshock masters on a real bike. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
  17. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have successfully fitted a FLAT SLIDE Keihn carby to my M199A- same as that sold as an option on Sherco. It's a little complex, in that I had to have a machine shop add a larger rear spigot fitting(to match the airbox rubber) but that carby is capable of really fine tuning, and here in Oz jets are readily available and the carbs are cheaper than Mikunis.   19. That's great. One part you should grab is the ( short ) kickstater shaft. They are made of "unobtainium" The shafts have always been a weakness-a combination of poorly tuned ( and hard to start ) motors and poor starting techniques. The right footpeg must be folded up before the kickstarter is swung because if the lever hits the peg the shaft says goodbye. There was a chap in Perth, Western australia who had some supplies of parts-I will see if I can locate him
  20. I have a similar problem with my 199A-getting neutral after a stop with the engine running. I have a set of Barnett clutch plates, good springs, correct rod/ball and believe it or not have spent some time with a dial guage and spring adjustment to get the clutch plates running true. Even the clutch pivot rod ( the vertically mounted object that moves the rod in the cases) is new. Clutch take up is fine- but the neutral problem persists. My local Bultaco guy wants me to go back to standard bar levers-not the short ones I run-for motre travel. Has anyone had experience with the Clutch kit offered by Phalfer from Germany
