  1. Hi, i have what I think is a 198, the frame number starts with 198 and then some numbers. The bike has the alloy bashplate/no frame rails at the bottom. Am I right in thinking the bashplate model was 198A and 198B? If so maybe mine has been converted - if it has then its a professional job and looks very much like others I have seen so Im not worried but it'd be nice to know. I'd have expected the frame number on a 198A or 198B to start with 198A (or 198B) not just 198... Any ideas? thanks
  2. Hi, Is there any information anywhere on the web about model year given engine number - so I can work out exact age of my Dads 247 cota??? thanks for any help, Stu
  3. Hi, Ive seen a few Bantams with small ally GasGas kickstarts lately. Is this a simple fitment and if so which model? any help appreciated. cheers Stu
  4. Have you tried a new condensor mate? or is it electronic ignition? My Bultaco does exactly what you're saying - changed the condensor and all OK.. My dads Monty sheared the woodruff key - lap the rotor on the shaft with fine valve grinding paste, clean off then use a small amount of bearing fit on the taper (I know an engineer wouldn't like that!). Don't forget the old Spanish carbs wear like hell - could it be just worn out?
  5. Thanks Monty Jon. The C15 swing arm is the same style of fitting (internal diameter) as the bantam but the front 'eyes' (where the bushes are) are futher apart. I cut them off and re-welded closer together (made a dummy spindle to make sure they were in line). Ive also lengthened the swing arm by about 1.5" by using the old bantam arm ends with the new C15 front section. Seems to look good, loads of tyre clearance.
  6. Many Thanks for all the help guys, sounds pretty staright forward. cheers Stu
  7. Hi, Im just finishing a Bantam for pre65/twinshock. Ive fitted a C15 swing arm and tyre clearance is fine. The only problem seems to be the chain touching the tyre. I have a 4" IRC fitted. Has anyone else experienced this? Im thinking the simplest option is to offset the rear sprocket and engine by a bit - I can use spacers on the back mount and cut/re-weld the front. Does anyone know if others have had to do this or am I missing something?? The wheels are central and in line etc (all checked with jig). any help welcomed! thanks Stu
  8. Its a 21M. Im cant believe is isnt a bearing - sure someone was trying to save some cash - so Im going to put the rod kit I have in. It has run but looks recently rebuilt (but I never trust that..), so its a new rod. thanks all.
  9. Hi, Just rebuilding a 247 Cota motor and the big end is a plain (bronze) bush. Ive never ever seen this on a 2 stroke engine. I have a new rod kit so I'll put that in, but I wondered if anyone had ever seen a Monty with a plain bush big end....seems strange, maybe the previous owner was trying to save costs or maybe Montesa did this at some stage - anyone know?? I can see how a bushed small end would be OK, as the movement is only through a small range (maybe 20 degrees per revolution) but the big end moves through 360 degrees. Having said that plenty of 4 strokes use shell type bush big ends - but are oil fed... Any comments anyone? many thanks Stu
  10. That'd be good if you could Davieboy, I spoke to Bultaco UK and they have new ones for the 199 350s but not for the 250 - they suggested I make one and gave some pointers (really pleased with the excellent service you get from these guys) but a picture would be great.
  11. Thanks Davieboy, re-doing the middle section made it a lot quieter, so Im going to do the back section based on your and Woodys advice. I used the old caustic soda mix to get the carbon out of the header pipe and square box - couldn't believe how much sh*te came out - but I guess it is 30 years old...
  12. Hi, Ive just repacked the middle silencer on my 190 by cutting it open, repacking then mig welding back up. Does anyone know if the back silencer (which ive heard refered to as 'club foot') has packing or not? If so where is it located - in the first upward section or in the big box at the back?? many thanks for any help. cheers Stu
  13. So Im not a million miles off, many thanks Woody. Will give Bultaco UK a bell (just bought a conrod off him, excellent service).
  14. Hi, My Sherpa is fitted with a 27mm Amal Mk2 carb (spanish), Im new to Bultacos and the bloke I got the bike off told me it was not the original carb. Is this correct? Is 27mm the right size and if so what jetting would be standard. Ive got loads of Amal bits and pieces so I can play about to get it right, but a starting point would be good. many thanks Stu
  15. Hi, I think (?) my 190 sherpa should have a head steady - there's certainly a bracket on the frame that look like its for that purpose and ive heard a few people mention them on this site. Does anyone know if a 190 should have one and if so, would anyone be so kind as to let me have a picture? many thanks Stu
  16. My dads TY175 has been stolen in the Billinge area (Nr Wigan, North West) - from my garage between 10.30pm last night and 5.30am this morning. Only bought it about 2 months ago to rehabilitate myself after a near fatal road racing accident. Gutted, just done the Red Rose Classic Ferndene trial at weekend. Faily unique, Red frame/swingarm, Miller tank and seat unit in white, white plastic mudgaurds, DEP silencer, Talon stickers on forks, home machined 50T rear sprocket, previous owner had powder coated lots of parts white - rear brake arm/rod, airbox, Pirelli tyres (not many use them these days). Kick start temporarily welded on. Fitted with small inline fuel filter. Please call me on 07803 885 675 if you see it or call the police (its been reported to Greater Manchester Police). my thanks in anticipation of any help, Stu
  17. Hi, Trialsbits do some nice (inexpensive) wider pegs - universal - they come with the bracket, so you'd need to weld to frame but you get all the bits, so wouldn't be that big a job. http://www.trialsbits.co.uk/index.php?cPath=85_137 I got some for my Bantam and they seem great.
  18. Many thanks Steve, very useful. cheers
  19. Good idea - I should've tried that first! thanks, will take a look.
  20. Hi, Has anyone tried Vee rubber tyres? They seem like my kind of tyre (at
