Anyone know the correct compression ratio for a 199b?

The centre metal part of the rubber bush should stay still when bolted up (you are saying it does). The swingarm moves against the tosion of the rubber - many british bikes were like this - they feel very stiff with no shock on but work fine.
More modern bike (including later Cotas) used bronze bushes and after that most moved to needle roller bearings.
Im sure yours will be absolutely fine but if you wanted bushes, In Motion could probably help check sizes.
cheers

Thanks Woody, mine doesnt have the braket welded on the frame so may have to improvise...

Could anyone please post a picture of the alloy head steady used on some of the 199bs?
I need a shot with the tank off showing the front frame mount.
I have the standard pressed steel one - were the alloy ones better? - looks stronger with 3 fixing points?
many thanks

Hi bige
Yes mine has the small flywheel likes yours. I love the motor, it's nice and soft but goes when you need I'm from a road racing background so I'm not keen on engines that feel flat.
I'd leave yours as it is and try it - very easy to fit a bigger one in the future.
Cheers

Picture in TMX news !
198b bought from Mr Hewson, managed to win the red rose twinshock class and beat Mr Vesterinen - (OK he was testing his new cub and he is over 60 ....but Im happy!).

Im renovating my 199b (which I haven't ridden yet) and Im finding some slight anomalies. The piston has been fitted without the con-rod spacers - this means the rod is floating at the big end and little end (!). I can remedy this but I am confused when looking at the transfer ducst in the crank case - these do not match the barrel and look more like motocross ducts than what I 'd have expected on a trials engine. Se picture on the link below.

Any ideas? Have I inherited some pursang cases? The flywheel is the large type and the primary chain is single row so everything else seems to be Sherpa. It has 6 gears.
Any clues folks??

Hi Dunc,
You can sometimes get them off by getting a stick welder (arc welder) and running weld around the bearing face - it seems to contract the race and it drops off. This also works on the outer race in the frame if you need to remove them.
If that doesnt work you may need to cut off using a thin cutting disk - you'll need to be careful if you dont want to damage the bottom dust plate.
good luck,
Stu

Advance Racing M is castor based designed for use in engines using Methanol as a fuel.
I used to use it (because I had a few bottles that were given to me and it was fine but if i were choosing to BUY oil I'd go with something more 'mainstream'. I always think that as Putoline pretty much only make motorcycle oils, they are likely to know what they're doing...

Bondy, I think the alloy gas gas ones from in motion may be just the job

Thanks for all the comments guys. I have some that I was considering using so will give em a go...

What's the deal with the Schreider valve forks nuts?
Guess it allows you to add some preload with air?
Anyone think they are better than the standard vented tops? Where they just a fad? I notice vesty has them on his xlite.
Thanks

Nice Martin,
I agree with your thoughts, I was at a trial a few years ago and an Ariel rider said "those 1980s Bultacos are the best bikes in the trial". I thought it slightly ironic and considered pointing out the they were older than most of the pre65 bikes. Anyway, it's just a bit of fun.
Can I ask about your yolks? Are the fork legs not parallel to the steering stem?
Cheers

Bit wierd but my recently acquired 340 has a 36mm Bing ! I am assuming this has been fitted in error? I'd guess 36mm would be about right for an MX engine.
I was pretty sure they came with 28mm???
Also, is the standard 199b (11t x 39t) gearing the same on a 198b or did the 250 have diffenent gearing?
many thanks!

Mine came from in motion and was spot on jetting from the word go. Motocarb in Liverpool also do them jetted to suit
-
Thanks for your help. Looks like its 27mm from the listing.
-
Hi,
Can anyone tell me correct carb size and jetting for a 348?
Also be useful to know correct shock length and spring weight.
Are they a nice engine?
Many thanks for any help

Also available on the auction site, many trials bikes post 1980 came with taper rollers, seem to be favoured over balls.
-
For a standard Bantam you'll probably have to make one....you can get alloy sheet from most autojumbles (go for 5mm ish)
