Depends on your skills/capabilities (welding, machining etc). Regardless, to build a good one with original modded frame (fiddle forks, alloy yolks, alloy hubs/rims, decent shocks, new carb, centre head, alloy exhaust, elect ignition etc) will cost you about £2.5k if you can do the mods yourself. A good one will be worth 3k upwards so its unlikely you will lose money.
We're only 'hiring' these things anyway - classic bikes are a better investment than a savings account...
Heres mine, I love it, cost me £1200 a couple of years back to build, but lots of work. Still needs alloy rear hub and barrel but if I had them I wouldnt lose any less marks so im not in a rush..

And heres my old mans, built for about £2k but again, lots of work...

Where'd u get sm28756 polished? Was if expensive? Ta
-
Hencam is right - its a thin washer - there are four galleries behind from memory..
Nice forks Bondy, you much be good a polishing!

I saw the bike and thought this airbox was just an older type with nice paintjob?? Like the ones used on the 158 series? I could be wrong....
It looked well prepared but not much by way of mods (although the card said frame mods - maybe tighter steeting head?).
I did really like the 199b on the Scott Trial stand with the lovely alloy swingarm (see link to my pics). They'd moved the pivot forward and made a new box section alloy arm (longer than standard). The pivot looked to be machined, with the box extrusions welded on - neat job.

Mine used to spit oil out - it was the balls in the caps. Maybe you can find them because they are siezed in?
You can get new ones if needed, about £30-40 from memory..

All good info folks many thanks will report which when I've tried it
-
Yes, you may be right Woody, it seems very small inlet and outlet..
I can get it to fit, but Im more concerned with performance (or more to the point, putting a hole in my piston..).
-
The Miller replacement for the clubfoot, I have one and its very light. I am worried about using it because the outlet area is a lot smaller than standard (so there will be more backpressure).
Does anyone have any experience with these? Any good??
cheers

Does the Rev 3 kickstart fit without any mods (is it same spline size?)
Really nice looking bike,
-
Very pretty, well done!
What is the kickstart and is it a fibre or plastic tank?

You should end up with the 21T on the output shaft and the 22 on the layshaft.

Hi,
Well done, more Bultacos can never be a bad thing.
Answers to some of the questions...
Some of the later fork legs were like that from the factory (mine is the same).
199B is the 340 6 speed engine, 198B is the 250 (and will only be 5 speed) - actually rarer than the 340.
The standard airbox's were fibreglass so looks like you have something a little more special. Maybe you could post some pics in the Bultaco forum?
Some came with plastic tanks and aome alloy so your plastic one is most likely what it came with from the factory. The alloy ones, were as you say squarer. A 198a tank would fit but you'd be better sticking with your plastic one for originality. You can get plastic and alloy from InMotion. It's rare to see an alloy 340 tank - lots of pennies if you can get one!
cheers

Lean the bike into the camber and weight on the outside peg - feels wrong but works right.

Thanks Woody, all understood, my intention is to move the pivot forward too - I think I can go about 15mm without having to machine the cases but I havent taken any accurate measurements yet just started looking.
I wanted to know if the comerfords arm and pivot mod ended up with the same wheelbase as the standard bike.
It'd be nice to see/measure one in real life if anyone is feeling kind..

Would anyone be kind enough to post some close up pictures of the swingarms fitted as an option to the 340s by comerfords please?
It would be inetresting to know length (pivot point to wheel spindle centre) too. I am looking to make one for a ratty 198b I have in bits as a spring project.
many thanks in anticipation

As trialsrfun says, search for universal chain slipper pre65 on eBay. Got one on my bantam, just zip tie on, easy.

I got the magical springs and single seals (with modern dust seal, not the original Bultaco one) and it is a big improvement. The magical springs seem to allow a decent amount of sag but dont top out which the original type (but new) springs I had did - this was a bit annoying and offputting on climbs...
I like the magical adjustable pre-load adjuster system, but couldnt justify the cost - you can achieve the same thing by making up some spacers of varying thickness (billetparts.co.uk also sell spacers at low cost) - how often do you change the pre-load when you're happy with them anyway?..
The magicals UK site seems to have been down for some time, so I'm not sure where/if UK customers could buy from. Maybe you guys in the US have an outlet?

Should get to some soon, not done enough riding this year for various reasons..
