Thanks for the replies guys! Here's what I did. Reverse drill with increasing diameter bits being careful not to drill deeper than 7mm. It did back out with the biggest bit - when I had about 0.5 mm wall left.
I found a 6mm x 1.0 pitch out of the bin at the auto parts store for $0.81. It works great but is long. I suppose I will replace it later with a real replacement. Bottom line is the seats may be universal.
PS - I didn't want to risk an ez-out as I thoughtit would expand the metal into the treads and make it more difficult. I used a reverse drill bit set from harbor freight - purchase price $7.99.
