Convinced myself that i needed a twin shock "project" and picked up a 1984 Montesa 242 in reasonable shape. It seems to be nearly all original but the airbox to carb rubber is split and the silencer (tail pipe) is missing. From what i've seen these seem to be a very narrow "pea shooter" type. Does anyone know if they are available or what a suitable replacement might be please? New, used, broken, i'm not fussy.
I've yet to start it up but have had a nosey in the gearbox side (which was oilless!) and the selector shaft seems to have been repaired at some point. Is this a Monty weakness? Any other tips, hints, opinions and disparaging remarks are invited.
Roy.

The results are in and i got second in ( class.......
...........out of two!.......ah well, at least i wasn't the worst on the hard course..a couple of DNFs and two below me overall!
More effort required according to my old man.

Hi Stuart,
It was a bloody good evening wasn't it? Came as a bit of a shock to the system after that GVMCC trial, and i'd somehow let someone talk me into riding the harder sections too! My legs were fine but my hands and arms were like claws on Friday.
What were you riding i don't remeber seeing any TLRs?
-
Came to me on the way home that it was you Heath i was chatting to at some point. Can you confirm or deny?!

Mine suddenly started making a knocking noise and it turned out to be the tank rattling at certain revs. Try slackening the allen bolt and repositioning it a bit.

Thank you for your captivating and charming response, may i respectfully suggest you try the search button?

Double checked and it seems that i'm using Dexron II not III, but it was v easy to get from the local motor factors. Halfords or any car parts shop should do it i'd have thought.
Motul is some nice stuff, i use it in my Subaru, not cheap though! It's probably more important to change it regularly than pay a fortune for some posh stuff. All IMHO of course

Hi B B,
I use Dextron III ATF in mine (TXT 2000 280) after searching these forums - it seems to be a popular choice.
The manual says 750cc but i think that is from completely empty (i.e. new) or 650cc for an oil change as you never get all the old oil out. Having said that i reckon mine took more like 700cc. There is a level window on the side and the oil should come half way up this with the bike vertical. Give it some time to settle though and top it up if it looks low after you've run the engine.
Castrol TTS also seems to be recommended and i mix it at 80 to 1.
My back brake was a pain but it transpired that the master cylinder piston wasn't returning out enough. After fixing that (added an extra spring inside) it seemed easier to bleed it by using a screwdriver to depress the piston (with the brake pedal off) then set the brake pedal travel and height.
Hope this helps and hope you enjoy your new bike.

No results here either Stuart - not sure if they'll bother because it was a fun trial. One dab sounds pretty damn good if you were on a TLR!
i'm struggling to find practice ground and the time at the moment. You're probably best off joining a couple of clubs, they seem to hold practice days.
R2W - I hadn't spotted those, but from the regs in the TMX i don't think i can ride the Hawkes one though?

Hi ya TLR,
well it was clean in my head
Pretty sure i stayed feet up - there was a point where my foot got knocked off the footpeg but i was definitely through the end pegs - but then again i suppose i should have been clean really, riding a newish mono through sections aimed at outfits, schoolboys, beginners and trail bikes did give me a bit of an advantage. It was excellent day out and a really good way to get back into it, it's a shame i can't ride any more of their trials!
How did you get on? The queues were a bit of a bugger but i there were a fair number of riders - i saw some guy with number 80 at least. From what i hear they are an excellent club and have some lovely bits of land.

What would the capacity of a TXT 2000 280 fuel tank be please? And how would that equate into hours/miles ridden?
I had a sudden panic that i hadn't taken any spare fuel with me recently and although the tank was full and got me through the trial it would be useful to have an idea for future.
Ta,
Roy.

Looking at the regs in the TMX and i saw one club offering 1/2 price entry if you brought an observer with you. I thought it was a good idea anyway.

Hi Heath,
Been popping on and meaning to reply but w**k keeps getting in the way.
It was a bit damp just before the start on Saturday but dried out nicely as the afternoon went on. Felt strange at first to be doing a trial again after so long but it all came back (what little there was in the first place!) to me and i had a 'kin brilliant day.
Only one course as it was a fun trial so i reckon there were a few clean sheets at the end including mine.
Somerton sounds good - got a feeling that i used to ride down that way. Any more info on Somerton, Hawks or practice grounds would be excellent.
Will email this too.
Cheers,
Roy.

That's a shame, but will no doubt cross paths at some point as we're (nearly) from round the same parts.
I probably won't make Sunday, don't want to push it too much too soon with the bread-knife. I've got to break her into trials nice and gently too.
Have a good weekend.
Roy.

Cool, i'll be the one underneath the GG 280
-
Hi there,
Just wondered if anyone else is popping along to the above trial over the weekend. It's any bike, any rider on Saturday and then their normal classes on Sunday.
It'll be the first trial i've ridden in 20 odd years so i thought i'd break myself in gently.
It's a pity i can't stay for the BBQ and Bar though!

For sure. I'm old enough and have been proved wrong enough to know that ladies always know best.

Smashing pics
I must get a scanner sorted out.

Thanks Perce,
Just wanted reassurance that i wasn't setting myself up for breakages, pain and possibly death.

Hi there,
I took the top fork clamps off my TXT 2000 to tighten up the head bearings and when putting the handlebars back on noticed that the clamps have an offset. I've turned them around so that the bars are a bit further forward to give myself more room (i'm 6'2") but just wanted to know if this is a design feature.
Also, is there anywhere i can download a manual please?
Cheers,
Roy.

Damn fine question
I think someone has been "inventive" with the routing. The front stopper is very grabby and the throttle is stiff too. Will be sorting a few things out as soon as, but apparently i'm not allowed in the garage till the morning
