  1. The white petrol smelling creamy substance will be a mixture of your petrol / oil mixture and water. When whisked up they produce this creamy mixture. This is more likely to be the following (accepting the fact that your bike does not lose coolant water). Whats happening is that petrol / oil mixture is in your bottom end and is creaping past the mains seals into the flywheel cover. Water tends to condense inside engines and flywheel covers and sits sometimes in a small pudle at the bottom. They are then whisked together by the flywheel going around causing this substance. This shouldnt be a problem unless you find that your bike is running with a weak mixture. As well as petrol getting out , air may get back into your crank and cause your mixture to become weak. This will show itself in your bike reving high in idle or the bike continuing to rev higher than usual or idle and "hunt". The bike may also start to over heat and pink , where you wil hear a knocking noise coming from the top end of the engine as the fuel pre ignites. If this problem develops ou may ned to change you mains bearings as the slop in them i lifting the seal up and down allowing the petrol out and the air in. You will need to change the seals as well. I'm sure you wont have to do this , as its a newish bike. Good luck and drain that water out.
  2. I have a very tired fantic 240 which i'm working on at the moment and would appreciate the any help of the following please. 1. What length were the standard rear shocks , eye to eye. 2. To establish if mine are shot .... What thickness are the clutch plates supposed to be ? (I've got a micrometer). Thank you
  3. I have 2 Fantic 240 frames, but they are different and dont appear to have been hacked about. Is this normal and which one is the prefered one? 1. The first has the traditional round bar over the rear mudguard. 2. The 2nd doesnt have the round bar over the back mudguard. The frame protrudes rear wards horizontally (as if it were the same bar which goes over the rear mudguard)but then stops and is flattened with a hole in it to attach to the rear guard Are both of these origional ? What do you think? Thank you for any help?
  4. Hi, Ty's are legendary and were all the rage in the 80's and early 90's. They were ace bikes in their day ,but nowadays the likes of Gas Gas , Beta etc are far ,far more competitive with more power, better brakes and suspension etc. Ty's will still win in the right hands and they are usually very reliable but most people will get better results on a more modern bike(especially time trials where power is needed). My advice is go out on the Ty and see how you get along with it. If you need more grunt and better brakes etc then i'd change bikes for a more modern one rather that hype the Yam up which will be money you are unlikely to get back. Mid 90's Gassers / Betas are quite cheap. Take a good mechanic along to check out your purchace before you hand over the cash. Good luck and welcome back to trials.
  5. If your problem happens when the bike is hot and its not a question of carburation and leakages , then its possibly got a lot to do with heat. Does it improve when cooled down ?. If so ...... Is there a possibilty that the engine of the bike is getting so hot that the supply of petrol is being restricted to your carb as it evaporates in the pipe or float bowl causing the bike to run lean. Is your carb or fuel pipe very near to the exhaust? I recently saw this happen to a four stroke Sherco trials bike where fuel was shooting out of the breather pipe... it does happen. Admittedly this bike is likely to run hotter than your 2 stroke bike , but it may be worth considering. Please keep us advised
  6. My new forks seals continued leaking on my old Gasser and i was told that there may be too much wear and slack causing the sliders to be loose (side to side) therefore opening the seal. I eventually fitted seals with a smaller inside diameter(.5mm)which cured the problem. This may cause the forks to be not so smooth. Try www.eabs.co.uk. They are very helpful and cheap and have every bearing and seal you could possibly want(not all on the web site). Are these forks upside down units that were fitted in Aprilia climbers? If so i have the parts sheet for them . If you want a copy then just message me privately with your email address and ill scan it and send it by email.
  7. I've been searching for an Alpha to buy for about a year now , with no luck so far. There is zilch on the net about these bikes and from what i recall i dont remember knowing anyone riding one other than the factory riders. The most famous of their bikes were 2 stroke mono's with front and rear discs. They looked very similar to Fantic's 245 range and had white plastics with purple / green with yellow graphics !!. Although i've only been able to find one pic of the bike i do have 3 videos with them on. They are available from Duke. The 86 World round at Peterfield features them . One of either the 87 English world round and Bilsten 87 World round also features them for a short while. These bikes are very rare and came along at the same time other weird and wonderful manufacturers were venturing onto the scene such as Merlin , Mecatecno , Garelli monos , JCM ,JJ cobas , Gas Gas Haley , JP Motos. All of these small manufacturers came onto the scene facing fierce competition from the big factories and produced bikes that were different. I love em all !!
  8. Hi, The TLM 260 Pentax Hondas were i believe imported in small numbers but the number in this country does exceed 2.I have 2 friends who own one. They shall remain nameless but one rides regularly on it and recently managed to buy a box of works bit from Japan. The other is as new and sits next to a radiator under a dust sheet. I believe the 2nd was imported specifically for the owner. The 260s are quite nice if you get the correct competition model. Honda did produce trail versions that were mightely laiden with heavy metal. There are quite a few TLM200 floating around and at one point my local shop had 2 for sale and just couldnt shift them. The 260's are the better and more desireable bike. Check out www.trialmc.com GasGas249uk
  9. My good lady Anne had a BSA Chapman when she was a mere lass and really enjoyed riding up and down the slopes next to her home. Thank fully she gave up riding to became my ace minder. I'll have a chat with the fathr in law and see what i can dig up for you.
  10. Simple question... Are the new VEE rubber 400 x 18 trials tyres any good? If i want to save a few pennies is the Vee rubber any good for mud and roots , and possibly the odd rock. The trial pattern looks similar to the Michelin but what is the compund like?. Has anyone tried them? If an Michelin tubeless is 10/10 and a Pirelli MT43 is about 4/10 then what rating would you give the Vee rubber?. I did try the Barum a few years back and wasnt too impressed but the Vee rubber looks better and is tempting me back to the dark side of cheaper tyres but would like your advice before i do so. Comments for us skinflints please.
  11. I've spotted this JCM for sale on Ebay and was considering bidding for it.It needs work , but at the right price ?? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JCM-pre-Gas-Gas-350c...1QQcmdZViewItem Does anyone know any history on this company and these bikes and are there any spares floating around and if so where?. Thanks
  12. It looks really good , well done. Better still it looks pretty competitive as well.ready and raring to go in the mono air cooled classic rounds. I see that the main footrest section of the frame is the original Aprilia , what about the front tubes. Are they box alloy or steel? The engine is quite a bit taller than the Aprilia lump.Presumably this engine is a bit lower than the last?. Is that a Gas Gas front mudguard with a clever little mounting bracket?. Are you hiding a Ducati style under seat silencer?
  13. Last year my wife and I travelled down to see the out door Andorra round. I am thinking about going to the World Spanish outdoor round and was wondering Are the events this year were going to be held over 1 or 2 days with the 1st day being for the youths again?. Also are the rounds going to be no stop or stop?. Has anyone been to Nigran in Spain and will it be a spectacular trials round? :hat:
  14. Gasgasssser, To answer you question Do you know what the clearence between a piston and bore which are new should be? I would advise that you check with your local dealer or Gas Gas but as a general rule for every 1" across the top of your piston you should have 0.001 clearance. Im not 100% sure but Gas gas may supply oversize pistons to fit your bore with the correct clearance. Good luck :hat:

    Knocking Beta

:hat: From what you have explained it sounds as though your bike has a case of fuel pre ignition / pinking . This does tend to get worse as the bike gets older or has more use and can depend on the fuel / air , fuel / oil mixture you are running. As your bike gets older carbon builds up on the top of your piston and stays there. This gets very hot and glows red igniting the petrol before the spark plug does. You wont notice this on idle as the engine has less fuel ,but open it up , more fuel is injected and the problem will start. You may be able to correct this problem by a - stripping the top end down and cleaning the carbon off. b - Cooling the engine down by going richer on your mixture , raising the needle to start with. Leave your idle well alone. The improvement will be gained from your needle , and then your main jet if the needle doesnt improve matters. Good luck and let us know how you get on. :santawink:
  16. Hi, I take it that it wont adjust to provide any damping (sorry for suggesting it- ha ha) . Your shock sounds as though it will need rebuilding. Falcon shocks will be able to rebuild it to a high standard. They are te best in the business. I've had 2 shocks rebuilt by them at
  17. No problem. The link takes you to the front page of www.fanticmotorlegend.it. 1. Click on English version 2. Click on "Fantic pages" in the left hand border. 3. When this page has loaded , click on video......and there we have it. Good luck and enjoy
  18. I was sent his link to probably the finest twinshock video footage i've seen in years. It's of fantic's, Bultacos and swms at the italian world round and the fantic factory . It really captures the 70's feeling and has some cool riding and a mean looking section. Slightly off topic but i'm sure you guys will like it.It takes a bit to download but well worth the wait. Go to http://www.fanticmotorlegend.it and then FANTIC PAGES .....then videos and then click on the trials links
  19. Why did Bultaco and Montesa go under ...Was it the Fantic 200??. I know that Mr Ignato Bulto set up Merlin so his enthusiasm was still there. I know that Spanish companies get big tax breaks for the first 2 years, keeping Mecatecno afloat. A lot of these companies were set up by enthusiasts and not business men. Maybe thats got something to do with it?. Anyone know?.
  20. Charlie Thanks for your informed reply. I feel that i cant mill down the top of the barrell of the head as its quite a technically machined arangement with recessed head studs in the top of the barrell which would all be badly affected. Secondly when the piston matches the bottom of its stroke im told by my dealer that the bottom of the intake ports should line up with the top of the piston. If i mill the top of the barrell down the piston will sit 5mm below the bottom of the port(fully open) ....i dont see the problem here myself. However milling off the bottom of the barrell will leave the top of the piston exactly in line with the bottom of the port entrance (as per he standard piston) and what the dealer advises. Overall one thing jumps to mind .... Your right , it is a big step to complete when i will never ever get a replacement barrell if it screws up . You advice sounds good to me .I'll see how it runs first and then go from there. The dealer seems to think it will run real flat with little compression. One step at a time me thinks These old bikes need to be kept alive ... and the keep they grey matter working. Cheers James
  21. 2 questions .... I have a Mecatecno 325cc which i am in the process of getting into tip tip nick. Although the engine is built by Mecatecno , Bultaco 325 pistons fit , just after a bit of wet and dry. 1.What piston clearance should i have ? My only problem is that the bultaco piston is not so tall and on TDC sits 5 mm from the top of the barrell. In order the get the piston up to the top of the barrell i'm going to have to mill down the bottom of the barrell by 5mm. My only problem then is that the skirt of the barrell at the bottom will not fit and will need grinding down by the same amount and some of the ports may not line up. 2.Has anyone any experience of doing this and am i over looking anything?. I'm well aware that once i've done it theres no going back. The old piston is shagged. Cheers
  22. Does anyone know the dates for the 2006 Classic rounds ?. Am i right in thinking you can ride air cooled monos as well as twinshocks? Were there many entries this year and are the venues good?
