As I prepare to strip my 83 240 naked to powder coat the frame, I thought it would be a good time to weld on some new footpeg mounts...
As my owners manual states "high-resistance,special steel" is there anything special I should know before I fire up my mig ? as in what type of steel???
And does anyone have a part# for the timkin steering head bearings ?
Also for the swing arm bearings and seals ?
And yes I will practice my welding on my spare frame that is cracked near the steering head on the brace between the backbone and downtubes, my good frame was already nicely repaired there before I bought her... The weak spot on the early fantics?...
Thanks;

And I still WANT one of the new models...!!!

Have any of you gents across the pond heard anything about a new fantic trialer? I just Finished my first 2 modern rounds on my 83 240 (first competion in 30+ years) and except for the hontesa's wasn't really impressed with the build quality of the other new bikes!! And when did they change the forward motion rule? I want a new fantic!!! Life to short to beat myself up on a old bike in modern bike sections!!
love the old fantic though...

Well after making one stator plate out of two and sealing the case as best as possable, She fired 1st kick while still on a milkcrate naked...
I think she likes me cause I take care of her and gave her a makeover!!!
But I would still love some contact info for some new? ignition parts, the trigger I used only has about 12mm of lead coming out of it!!! Makes it kind of hard to solder a new lead that has to bend right out of the trigger...
Thanks for the support,
Glenn

Thanks Dabnabit,I've got the original owners manual for my 240 and it lists everything as 6 volt so I was wondering if I put the lighting coil in parallel with the ign. coil if I could get 12 volts out of her, as the ht coil(7) appears to be the same one in your diagram. Not the tin can that is depicted on my wiring diagram, but the rest of it is basically the same...
Now does any one have the ohm specs to test the two stators and triggers I have? before I flip a coin on witch one to put back in?
Thanks, Glenn
-
And while I'm puttig the First stator back in,does anyone know what I should do with the lighting coil leads as my bike will never have lights on it?
Can they be paraelled with the ign. windings to up the amperage to the HT coil I've installed?
Just a thought...
Thanks, Glenn
-
Martin; I've installed a HT ign. coil from a late model,as the oe.silver can coil started leaking oil and developed a short to ground, or are you refering to the windings on the stator plate?
And of course any info on contacts for someone that can rewind would be priceless to me, I really like this old bike!!!
thanks,Glenn

Is there a possibility anyone out there knows where I can get a nos or remanafactured stator/pickup plate for my 83 240 pro??? The two that I have both appear to be heat sensitive. I've already updated to a late model HT coil, but after riding it for 15 to 25 minutes it'll lose it's ignition at the most inopportune moments. Not very confidence inspiring at all...
Any and all info greatly appreciated, As I've got the old girl set up to my taste now and I'd really like to be able to use it with a little faith that she won't die when needed most...
Test specs, tips whatever...
Thanks
Glenn

Tony, If you still need a kickstand you can see if my spare 240 one will work.
Are you going to shooting creek? I'll be there both days... Time to get my feet wet again?

After trying a few differant filters I had around, I finaly made a cardboard mockup of a filter that would work in the stock air box and spent some time on the K&N website and ordered a pn# E3211 filter. It arived last nite, and with a strip of self adhesive 1/4 weatherstrip on the fitter edge to help seal against the inside of the airbox (exhaust dip on top of housing), it fit like it was made for the bike!
They also make one that is 2mm taller pn# E3212.
No more foam filters!!!

And does any one know of some real footpegs that will work on my bike without to much modifacation? The stock ones leave abit to be desired...
thanks,Glenn

As in I have 5,6,6.5 and 7 mm spoke wrenchs and they appear to be 5.5 mm, and I wanted to know before I bought another limited use tool!!!
thanks, glenn

I wonder if anyone can tell me the size of the spoke nipples on my 83 240 pro???
thanks, glenn

Hi;
pull the plug, and the carb and start kicking it. Some compressed air may help dry the bottom end out. My 240 needle stuck awhile back and after a light rap I got my bottom end cleaned out, about 200 kicks later she ran fine again! And all I can find about the plug is they all started life with l82 champion's

My carb is in pretty good shape for it's age, but is there any other new carb that will work on the 240?
thanks

I'm running a B5HS now, but it had a BP4HS in it when I got her,w/the stock coil. What is the difference between a B# and a BP#? I know in ngk the smaller # is a hotter plug.
And I built a air box to fit the K&N I used!
thanks;
Glenn

As the champion L 82 is hard to find anymore,what spark plugs do you gents run with a late model coil fitted to my 83 240 ? I just need input on a ngk or nd baseline to start with as I have lengthened my intake boot and run a K&N air filter, which so for has improved my off idle snap quite a bit...
thanks, Glenn

I'm glad I looked at this post , as I am about to take my spare frame apart to see how it goes together before I start on my keeper bike!
I may have a spare swingarm shaft if both of mine are in good shape...

Out of my 83 240 pro's owners manual.
' primary drivewith helical gears Z-21/71 ratio 1:3.38 secondary drive with chain 5/8"x 1/4" Z-12/39 ratio 1: 3.35.
Mine has a 11 tooth countershaft and 39 rear, and it fairly close ratio thru 6th , which of course is1:0.70 overdrive.
I'm changing the final drive on mine down to about 1:4.00 or 1: 4.20.
I'm old and slow though!!!...
