Some of the best people I know on this planet we call home , are trials folks ... It's the thinking persons sport . You challenge yourself and no one else .
So camaraderie abounds . AND IT'S ADDICTIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep your feet up and have FUN !

As Copey said AVE gas is the way to , leave the bike alone and try some . I run it in all my trials bikes (except the reflex , it gets eth free pump gas , like my lawnmower !) . The ave gas is fine in any tank , and will store indefinitely .
Well worth the effort .

I may have to look into that for my 97 , I've got 2 each of the 2 lower hoses , but the top 2 hoses are unobtainium ! and mushy enough to scare me ...

Hi all you montesa riders , I've got a chance to obtain a 83 349 , kinda cheap ... but in rough shape .
Are they worth the effort ? I'm thinking of it for my 18 yr. old and to use as a buddy bike ...(and he might be my buddy again ...)
How is parts availability ?
All thoughts appreciated ,

I worked at a Honda dealer twisting wrench's when the Reflex was released . I still had my poweroll big bore tl125 at the time (Well it was in my big brothers garage a few towns away ) I hadn't rode a trials event in years and I got all excited while uncrating and setting up the reflex , just looking at that XR200 based engine in a trials bike !!! But that went out the window when I fired it up and rode one for the first time . My first impression was Honda screwed up ! The gearbox wasn't trials , it went no where near slow enough , was totally gutless , and it had a battery !!! It almost handled like a trials bike , but not quite ... It was uncomfortable to ride on the street for more than a couple miles ... I was left wondering what market Honda was trying to reach with the model ?
And now some 28 years later , I've got a 87 model out in the shop , all lightened up , Trials seat/tank unit on it, electrical system stripped down to a kill switch and ign. , Carb modified , noise reduction baffles removed from the airbox , Different exhaust system so you can hear the bike run (although not loud at all ) and mildly re positioned footpegs and different final drive gears so it's slowable ... And this 15 year old son that loves his reflex like I loved my TL back in the day ...
So who's to say Honda didn't hit the mark ? It just took a while for the bike they never tried hard to market here . And you still meet the nicest people on a Honda !

Great Find !
I've never even seen one on this side if the pond . I would think that to be a fantastic little bike that will only go up in value .
And the fork sliders sure look backwards to me too ... I'd add some aluminum rims to shed alot of weight . Hope he enjoys it and kicks some a$$ on it !

John ; Great photo's
At your son's age and size I was riding a TL125 when they first hit the market here in the states . Back then being small and light I had to learn technique more than anything as I couldn't manhandle the little honda . If your tl125 is in good shape , put him on that and let him practice ... Then build him a trick twinshocker you both agree on . I just moved my son (15 , 5'4 140lbs) from the big wheeled ty80 I built for him to a reflex ('cause I couldn't find a tl125 ! and the ty was swapped for it ) My son is actually learning the skills needed now , and at every event I take him to , he gets positive reinforcement from all my riding buddies and does better because of it .
And I'm just like your son I like my trick 240 Fantic better than any modern bike I've ever ridden , And I just enjoy riding the old girl . (don't tell my section I said that !) I watch Ryan Young ride my 240 with his big grin and know in my heart that she's a lot more capable than I will ever be ...
But your son is young and may aspire to be a world champ ... Time will tell and he'll grow faster than you think
Best of luck and have fun , and give your son a hug from me .

Hey Guy ;
I can't wait for you to send me a ticket and a plane ticket !
(I won't hold my breath ...)

A photo would've helped us mere mortals ...

John ; I've got a FM330 (big wheeled Fantic 50 twinshock ) and fantic built the same bike in 75/80 cc . Fantastic bike for my boys to ride , light, handles great , and is in need of a overhaul at this point . Ours is a 79 , but they made them for a few years .
Find one of those and there will be no rules debate !!!
Glenn
Hendrik posted while I was typing , Same model bike !!!

Or you can get one of these ... http://pitposse.com/strare.html
I've got one of each , for different bikes , makes life easier

Some nice Fantics taking names and kicking @$$ in there !
Thanks for that

Your right ! I neglected to read the fine print on the reservoir cap ! I thought it only said made in Italy ...
1.00 BAR or in my terms 14.5 psi .
Thanks for opening my eyes

Just a general cooling system question . As it appears now that I will have to fabricate the upper cooling system hoses for my 97 section , I was wondering if anybody knew what the operating pressure of the radiator cap on most trials bikes is ?
or in other terms at what pressure will they release cooling system pressure ?
Thanks in advance !

Should be required viewing for all motorcyclists
Very entertaining
Great start to my day

George ;Glance thru my "new bike in the shop thread " I'm pretty sure I listed all the carb mods I did to my son's reflex in there , It fires first or second kick cold and always one when warm . No hesitation , cough or sputter at all now . Get the K&N filter and take the rubber silencer off the top of the airbox too , helps alot with response .
Have fun with the old girl , and make sure your valves are adjusted correctly

Copey , As to better looking I doubt it ...(think Jennifer Beal ,Flashdance era ... )And after we got divorced ,we got our friendship back and have been close buddies for the last 25 years . And is the Drilling kicking in anywhere near you ? But I do like the flagstaff area though .
-
OK cali guys ...
I've been away since 2003 . used to live in Arrowhead . If I move back , what will it take me to get my trusty Fantic collection green stickered out there ? My First wife wants me to come back ? Or is Flagstaff Arizona a better option ? I like the climate / terrain in both areas .
Just curious of what you know ...
