Not my fault Copey !!!
Poor ole 50cc minerelli wouldn't stay running after a ungraceful "over the logs , hit the stump , jump the ribbons , lay it down to avoid the LARGE rock , all @ WFO ...!!" But he did get up off the ground with a smile and say " quess I fived that " We really got to work on some throttle and clutch control , At least he now understands that Trials is not like riding the old XR100 with the point and twist method . If my patience lasts , He'll learn some finesse .

Well I took my son to his first event on the FM330 ... He DNF'd due to a carb condition , and fived almost everything ! But the Trials bug bit him hard and he can't wait for his next shot at it . ! Now to get him to understand that on a 50cc bike , the clutch is your best freind ... But he has been working on his balence and turning on the bicycle (fantic !) , as they feel quite similar !
Glenn
-
But Gee , When I learned how to ride trials 30 odd years ago , half the process was as stated above , "where to take the one dab and make it count for something " Planning your line , and maybe take a 3 instead of a 5 ... But then we didn't hop around then either . A well placed/executed floater turn was about the best move you could master . And you practiced figure 8 turns at full lock as slow as you could maintain balance ! One lock to the other without any straight travel ... That's why I ride as many ITSA events as possible !!!!!

Steve hmmmm... If it's not to much bother could you get me the crucial info from your carb ,so we can get it to Matt Cooper at www.dellorto.co.uk ? And maybe he'll make us a deal on 2 carbs ... What is the OD of the mainifold stub your carb slides on ? And you say a 80cc top end is a bolt on affair !!?? Ours is a little noisy/rattily so a complete top end swap may be the best option , as I'm sure you'll agree it's not much fun above 2nd gear ... The Folks at francetrialclassic.com set me up with 428 sprockets and I think they had another set ... (not that little bike will ever wear one out , not much load for a 428 chain !)
Have fun !

Ours is doing well , Thanks to Bill Pye for brakes and rubber bits and the folks at France trials classic for 428 sprockets for the little old girl ... Got fresh rubber on both ends . (finding The correct size tube for the front over here was a chore ...!) I got it running well , but I'm not happy with the carb performance , All the info I have (original sales brochure's and parts list ) states that it should have a dellorto SHA 14/12 carb. and ours has a dellorto PHBG 15 as ... As you may know the sha carb is a little flatslide and the phbg is a round slide . No matter what I try with the carb that is on it I can't get a clean , low idle or good off idle throttle response . That and the clutch won't engage correctly until it's hot and i make it break loose in 4th gear or above . The plates may just be gummed up after sitting unused for 20 odd years ... Changing the oil has had no effect . Just out of curiosity what carb is on yours ? And maybe we should start a FM330 club , The only other one that I know of over here that still works belongs to Ryan Young ... So at least we are in good company ! But I do find it's like riding a trials bicycle , Extremely sensitive to rider position and input . And as my Daughter just wants to play on it once and awhile in the yard , my 13 year old son will make his trials debut on it at a ITSA event in North Carolina on the 16th of august . (video to follow ...)
Where did you find the one you have ?
Glenn
-
Hmmm. I am kinda liking the red and black ... the trusty 240 may find a new Spanish roommate ...
-
Ain't that just a fact of life !
Glenn
-
Nice work Dan , But in a pinch can't a bit of small rope carefully inserted into the plug hole (right before TDC.) perform the same task ?
Or are beta's that unique ?
Glenn
-
Boy your comp. must messed up ! one of the nicest lime green Moto-Gori's i've ever seen .
-
Or you could contact B&J Racing , They make some very high quality cables ... For just about anything I beleive .
Glenn
-
Lee , Were those yours I got thru Steve Goode ? Flexable to say the least ... I painted mine the right red very lightly and then applied correct stickers and some polyurethane clear over it all and they seem to be holding up well . I also lined them with some heat barrier tape to keep them from cooking like the originals ... I don't remember them being too expensive as they are made from unobtainium ... And my OE. one's had popsicle sticks epoxied to the backside , I put there to keep them from cracking worse ....

I think it's DZUS Fastener...

!!! or it could be a different approach to a splatter ...

VC. , A pn# E-3211 K&N fits the airbox great with a strip of self adhesive weather strip added to the edges to make up for the irregular surface of the airbox . I ran a 96 main in my delorto and I'm right at sea level too . And if memory serves , if the mixture screw is on the engine side of the slide ,it controls fuel . And if on the air cleaner side it controls air into the idle passage . If a idle air screw turn out to lean it out , if a fuel screw , turnin to lean it up . ( I think ! Carb basics 101 ... ).
Glenn
But the OKO just works so much better overall .... Just tell Chris to set yours up just like he did mine , (I'm sure he keeps detailed notes ) and you'll be a happy camper !
-
I had Similar issues with mine when I first got her ... But to transform your bike into a responsive , crisp , one kick wonder ..., Get a OKO from Classictrial , A K&N airfilter , A denso iridium plug , and if it hasn't been changed out yet , update to a modern coil from Steve Goode .
The money spent on these few simple little things will transform your bike from a 80's semi reliable good twinshock into a modern bike with 2 shocks !
Remember the Dellorto is 25 years old , and no matter what has wear on the slide and bore that will make tuning a challenge , Don't waste your time and energy kicking a dead horse ! and if you get a new carb , make sure you have a new intake rubber too, Just makes life easier !

Hello all ,
Does anyone know what the recomended amount of gear oil is for the 50cc minerelli motor in our Fm 330 ? I just want to be sure I have enough silkolene on hand !
Thanks ,

I spent the weekend of june 6th at TTC for a work weekend helping Charlie layout sections and clearing the loop . I also got the chance to spend some time riding with David and Karl Davis jr. Who both are staying out there for a while . Watching these two fine young men practice on old world round sections was awesome ! They both would keep pushing each other just a little bit further ... Which was quite interesting for a old guy like me to watch as they have completly different styles and absolutely NO FEAR !!! I firmly believe both of them will go far in the world of trials...
And they showed no frustration dealing with this old guy on his old bike for a day ... It amazes me sometimes how our sport brings different generations and total strangers together sometimes , one of the still rewarding experiances we can have these days !

Curious minds want to know ...
How did he score a 9 ? in sections 4 & 5 ? on sat. ?
Brilliant ride on sunday though !!

I don't know much about it yet , but I just got a 1980 fm330 for my daughter . Only mine only needed a few rubber bits to be right ... A one owner extremely low hours bike ... ( still had moulding nubs on the rock hard stock pirelli's ...) It feels just like my 240 , minus 12hp and 50 lbs.
Bill Pye would be your man for parts on the old little fantic ... And it's a joy to ride , my girl is in japan right now and I've been working/playing on her bike ! ( my spare ...)
Have fun !

Lee I had one of those in my shop for a bit ... Got it running for the guy , rode it around the yard a little . and then help him load it up cause he got transfered ... But I still have a dream involving a Jumbo ... ( don't let my fantics know !) And as far as I know Martin would be the man .
Got some points or something to me right quick ... And he knows his SWM FACTS .!

Coolant ? You know, ambiant air temp ... Seriously Though Heat it up , cool it off ,heat it up cool it off , Varied throttle/rpm , don't let it get too hot ... Then change the oil and go for it ... If it didn't break it won't , ride it like you like it ! And don't forget a bit of engine braking to help seat rings completly .
Glenn
PS , I've changed pistons and rings on motocrossers between heats ... What Break in ...!
-
Mich ; Any chance of you doing a reprint of your book ? Or do you know where one may be obtained ?
Thanks ,
Glenn
-
Umm ... There 's a few more things than that been done ... And doing a few more !
-
You've got a unmolested (IE.stock ) 240 pro !!! how can things get much better ? The more you ride it , the more you'll like it ...
Guaranteed ! I never owned a 2 stroke trials bike and had never even heard of a Fantic when I bought mine , so I had to learn to ride all over again ... Most likely the best built bike I've ever owned ...
