Longer / stronger shocks and the swing arm will be a inch or so longer behind the shock mounts , and when bottomed out right now all that hits is the OE. fender which is going away anyways ... now to make/find a fender bracket to fit these skinny forks !!! And the forks sag about a inch and a half with just the weight of the bike on them ... IT'LL WORK !!! (I THINK ) And besides the back wheel, spacers and all slid right into place and the sprockets line up ! this was meant to happen !
-
A bored sunday afternoon !
This transformation will be even easier than I thought ! I'm just gonna weld the xr headstock into the ty chassis and lengthen the stock ty swingarm a inch or so and all will work just fine , when I put some trials tires on the wheels and maybe some longer/stronger shocks than the ty80 Betor units . the triple clamp in the photo's has no brgs in it, so the fork angle is far from correct at this point ! And I have to make a anchor for the back brake and rebuild the forks ,but I can't wait to make it all work ! The back wheel actually clears the swing arm with a 3.50 knobby on it , although there is no room for chain adjustment , Yet ...

Boy you guys get to have all the fun !!! Now I truly wish I'd of moved to oregon in 03 from lake Arrowhead instead of SC. ! But I have to go in for shoulder / clavicle surgery on the 18th . My clavicle mended/healed but it's at a strange angle and won't let my arm move anywhere near correctly ... so it gets rebroke and pinned/plated back into its OE position ! and then the therapy starts all over again !
But I'm starting a Ty80 / Xr100 project for my mental rehab and anti depressant while off work for another 8 weeks $$!
And Jay I've got to call my brother in or. tonite and ask for some brotherly advice/opinion about a job offer I've been given , so I'll find out about the Zero and PM you the details .
Well at least in 09 I'll be able to take my boys to ride with me !
Glenn
-
But it would still just be a old xr ... not a trick ty80 !!! And it has to be a twinshock ! (in my book). I mean really , how many custom ty80's do you ever see anymore ?
Glenn
-
But I'm gonna need a winter project and the ty mods are looking easier the further I go ! and except for 2 brgs. all I'll have invested is some time and then a set of little trials tires . and the ty will be able to be put right back to stock ! So I'm gonna put some bigger wheels on it and see if the boys really want to ride , before I get a beta or a ty175 for them . And what else am I gonna do with another 6 to 8 weeks off work ! I gotta stay out of trouble somehow !!!!!
Glenn

Yes , it was on my watch list , along with a 94 clubman in indiana (I think ) that ended without a sale ! May have to call on that one ....
I'm gonna need a winter project , besides enlarging the boys ty80 , as my doctor told me today he wants to operate on my clavicle/shoulder at the end of the month to make it work correctly again ...!!!
Glenn , now just to come up with some extra $$$ I Hate back to school time !$!$

I agree Lee , reline first then the cosmetics .

I disasembled the xr sunday afternoon ... And This will work ! I've got to find another ty80 swingarm and section the two arms together (xr &ty) so I can keep all the oe ty parts ... (so it can go back to stock , if need be . ) This should work out well and be easier for the kids to learn on ! I'll keep a photo journal of the transformation .
Glenn
Just ran across a photo of a 80's Fantic 80 !!! And in my leaning this part against that part mock-up , is just about the stance I'll get when done ... (I hope !)
-
Thanks Brian , and in a 2.75x19 too !!! But who on this side of the pond sells VEE Rubber ? And I'll Make it work before I actually spend any $$$ on tires and such ! Would you like a xr100 chassis and mono shock swingarm ? However I do it , it has to stay ITSA legal !!!

Hi all ...
I was just out in my shop with my boys talking trials bikes ... As some of you may know I just did a ground up on a 74 ty80 that I obtained for my youngest son ... And of course my middle child (2yrs older) parked his 89?xr 100 after he WAY overrevved it and got it to bend some valves ... But this thought came into my feeble mind ! What if I used the XR wheels and forks and built my own whitehawk TY80 ! I'd have to lengthen the swingarm abit to clear the 16' back wheel , and a little creative bearing application and the forks should work ... And the fresh / tweeked ... ty80 motor has more than enough to spin the larger wheels ... AND chen shin make trials tires in a 3.00 x19 and a 3.00x16 ! so I could even put trials tires on both wheels ! I really can't afford a little BETA so I think This may work for a few years ?
So am I nuts or what ?
And the XR brakes are SO much better than the TY"S !

Hi ; I personally don't know what mods they did back in the day , but these days you may want to contact Bob Ginder at B&J racing in dickson , TN. He has built one for one of our ITSA members that pulls like a john deer and turns like a bobcat ... I have not a clue as to how he ported the motor , but I do know the bike has Falcon shocks and WES front springs , and I'd bet he modified the fork angle a wee bit . But Bob would be your best source for anything twinshock related here in the colonies ... The Man has a wealth of knowledge and the facilities to put it all into use ... (ie. a shop that can do what ever you dream up or need ) Eventhough he doesn't stock much in the way of fantic parts , with his guidance and some suspension parts , has helped me turn my 83 fantic 240 pro into a machine that can hold it's own at a modern event ... As long as I don't get to carried away !
Glenn , Best of luck !
Just get out and ride the Kt , and make mods as you can/need them !!!

Hi Spud ;
Rear brake squeek ! I went thru the same thing ! I finally found the return springs just touching the hub ... I just turned the springs over so they went behind the shoe in relation to the backing plate . (I truly don't remember , but just put them on opposite of what you have now ! )
The sound mine made was QUITE distracting ... but all is quiet now .
Cheers , Glenn

And a old mechanics safety note !!!! WD 40 is QUITE flammable even after the carrier has seemed to have evaporated .... Been there , done that !!!! Good luck !

That last line was imho rude ! And Pat if your reading this , Do what your heart feels ! It is your Life ...
I've seen you ride and and IMHO you can go as far as you want .
But remember you only get one grab for the brass ring , do what makes YOU happy , before anything else ...
The rest of your life is along ways away . And learn some language, it will make your travels more fun , even if it's just the basics .

And watch the fire hazards , the whole country is a tinder box right now !!!

Happy Fourth ! Glenn

And as usual here in the states at least , noise laws , although in place , rarely , if ever get enforced ... And yes I mean the STUPID A$$ thumping car stereos that you can feel in your own car or home and the producer of the low frequency sound waves is a 1/4 mile away !!! Or the straight piped , ape hanger handlebared harley that speeds thru residential neighborhoods at whatever speed they deem appropriate at anytime of day or night ... Now don't get me wrong , I LOVE music and I like the occasional harley , But why are some folks egos ? so fragile that they have to have all this Hey I'm loud and obnoxious !!! so look at MEEE!!!! mentality ... What's the point ???
I vented , now I feel better !

QUIET IS GOOD !!!!!
