  1. Hey Alex, I'm in Fredericksburg. Rob
  2. Abso freakin lutely. First time I rode my 97 GG 270, I hooked the front brake on a small vine an nearly killed myself. Coming from an enduro background, I am very used to brushing trees/branches with my handguards. I guess I just can't re-train myself to not do so with the trials bike. A set of the Acerbis rallye (all plastic) guards is only about $50. What's a new master cylinder cost now, not to mention the levers and grips. Give it a try, you just might like it.
  3. I voted No because I currently use the Acerbis rallye hand guards. Keeps from breaking levers and tearing up grips.
  4. The 2008 schedule for the Carolina Virginia Observed Trials Club can be viewed on our website, www.cvotc.org A pdf of the file is available here Check the website for latest schedule and results.
  5. Aaron, your best bet is to check the MAVT website, www.mavt.org. Roger Annable keeps it updated. They don't typically set their schedule until about February, but Roger might have a feel for a preliminary schedule.
  6. Don't know if this helps, but over the pond here in the US, I use "LA's Totally Awesome". It's available at Dollar TRee and other discount homestores. Costs $1 for about 20 oz. Works Awesome. HTH Rob

    Herd Of Swms

I took a couple pics of the "herd". I think there were about a dozen SWMs there. Unfortunately, only two of us were actually competing. jbswm brought at least 6 bikes including two MX/cross country bikes. The most interesting one is a French '84 that is a Jumbo frame with a 280 motor. I ended up with 49 pts on the 2 line riding my 82 240. Rob

    Herd Of Swms

I'll try to make it Johnny, hopefully the wife will let me out of the house that weekend. We've got our first born (son) coming on or about the 13th of April. Three weeks should be sufficient right?

    Herd Of Swms

Johnny, where is this gathering planned? I might be able to bring out my 240 to add to the herd. Rob
  11. check out www.thedbsnorkel.com I imagine that it would do a great job on the pop that most trials bikes have at idle.
  12. I guess I'll add my two cents to the fray. I started out riding trail/enduro bikes about 20 yrs ago. All of my bikes had the aluminum type bark busters. I have never had an injury that could be attributed to the bark busters, and I'm sure that they have saved me many broken fingers. When I started riding trials, I believe I rode for about 30 minutes without handguards before immediately realizing that I Needed them. All it takes is riding a bit too close to that small twig or vine which grabs the front brake when you're not expecting it. Next thing you know, you're on your head wondering what happened. I run the Acerbis Rally handguards and have on all my trials bikes. It's a mod I make before even riding them. Lord only knows how many sets of levers they have saved. As an added benefit, when you drop the bike in the mud, the handlebar is less likely to be completely buried. I can't think of a single time that I wished I didn't have the handguards on the bike. However, I can think of many times that I was glad they were there. JMHO Rob
  13. Sounds like you had a good ride up there at Motorama. I would hardly consider any twinshock a "cheater" at a modern indoor trials. Rob
  14. If the flywheel side crank seals fail, you will suck air rather than tranny oil. This air leak will lead to a lean condition, and therefore high revs. I suspect that it only happens at high revs because there isn't enough vacuum in the crank to pull the air at low revs. HTH
  15. Just something else to check. Has it sheared the woodruf key on the flywheel. This would allow the flywheel to be "out of time" with the pickup. HTH Rob

  18. I sure hope that Scorpa/Yamaha are smart enough not to use that top-heavy DOHC YZ/WR motor.
  19. Pete, Welcome to the "Modern Trials Wasteland" that is the DC Area. Actually it's not truely that bad. AMA District 7 puts on a series (5 events maybe) that are run in conjunction with the MAVT (Mid Atlantic Vintage Trials) Series. MAVT runs about 15 events a year, maybe less. Their site is www.mavt.org. If you are willing to travel a bit, District 6 (PA) has a large series, but most events are quite a haul from Silver Spring. Also, CVOTC (www.cvotc.org), Carolina Virginia Observed Trials Club puts on a series in southern VA and Northern NC. I would like to welcome you to come out to a NVTR, Northern VA Trail Riders club meeting. We have a growing contingent of trials riders in our club. A quick caution about Taskers Gap. While it is an awesome place to play with the trials bike, keep in mind that if you are caught by a ranger (specifically Ranger Buck) playing off a designated trail, you will be ticketed. By the way, My club, NVTR, is sponsoring a trail improvement project out at Taskers Gap this coming weekend, 4-5 December. Thanks, and I hope it helps Rob Kirkpatrick President NVTR
  20. Or better yet, a 14 mm brass drift...
  21. This is not specific info to the Beta forks, but works for USD forks in general. You need to remove the damper assembly (internals) from the fork. To do this, you have to remove the base valve or bolt that is in the bottom of the leg (down by the axle clamp.) This is done externally, using an air impact wrench. Once the bolt or base valve is removed from the bottom, the internals will come out and you will be able to separate the inner and outer tubes. Don't forget to remove the clip holding in the seal or you risk damaging the outer tubes. Hope this helps. Rob
