Hi Shercoholic
I've been using NGK PFR6B Platinum Plug in my 05 4T, easy to find, used in Suburu's!
I change it maybe once a year after ~50 trials use, usually when i do the shims.

Once you have the cam cover off (05 model), re shimming the valves just takes a few minutes + the time to get
the new shims posted to you! I do mine every ~6 months.
There is a powerpoint presentation on servicing the 4T, well worth a look, its on the Sherco USA site.
Good luck

I tried the Keihin RE, didn't like it, big flat spot in the middle just when you wanted it.
Would like to know what jetting is in your carb and any other mod ?
Didn't mount the ign module under the carb, and the new coil where the ign module was placed did you ?
I did!!
I'll try post a pic .
Got nudged down the line RE 500, seen you lurking so I thought I would re post, would like to know any info on your carb.
Cheers, ishy.
Hi
I was sent a new type Keihin with the small hose tail in the inlet stub, this connects by tube to a 'hot start' valve similar to the one supplied in the Sherco kit.
Settings are:
50 Pilot
125 main
~ 1 1/4 out air screw depending on weather.
Didn't write down the needle/slide code.
Engine response is totally linear, no flat spots or jumps in power.
Maybe JarvisSherco is lurking and will post his and Alans impressions of my 4T, especially grip compared to the 290!
Will post rest of info after carb stripdown.
Cheers

Hi Dixie,
Yes, I guessed it was 'him', he does like a good storey, i'll have a chat with him on Sunday!.
Glad your enjoying the Mont, maybe the Beta will be better than both...according to the bearded one.

Dixie,
Nice rumour, but unfortunately not true!
Never rebuilt the engine....let alone 7 times, did fit the replacement cam though!
Not replaced the 'whole' ignition system, just fitted supplied kit a little differently than was suggested.
Have changed the carb, fitted Keihin supplied from Paxau in Spain. Without a doubt this was the best mod of any, not just for starting.
Many riders have tried mine from Youths upwards, all are able to start it hot/cold without issue, even after stalling or throwing it away!

Mounted mine just above the cam chain tensioner. NO NEED to drill the frame!
I used the head steady allen bolt and the cam chain top allen screw.
Upside to this position is that it stays cool!

With the factory hot start kit, the operating lever is attached to the clutch master cylinder cover.
So, just glance at the bars

I didn't receive any shims with my kit.
I just used several from the original as required to get the end float
correct.

I have received a 'full' kit.
a. Coil/HT lead/cap.
b. Kickstart lever, inc pivot/spline.
c. New camshaft and decompressor, as an assembly.
d. Hot start device/banjo bolt/cable/new clutch master cylinder top with
integral hot start lever.
Looks like a nicely engineered collection of parts.
Got a trial today so no time to fit anything other than the kickstart.

Hi
Lets hope the new kit sorts the starting out for everyone.
Speaking of which, has anyone fitted the new replacement coil yet?
Haven't fitted mine yet but seems rather large for the space!!
Any pointers from those that have fitted it?
Cheers

would these be the same 3.2T mods as advertisd in T&MX?
Always interested in making the bike 'better'.
PM me with details as well.
I have spoken with someone who has received their kit, fair to say he was not
massively impressed.

I'd agree that in some situations they are not as easy to ride as a well setup 2stroke
Also agree the 4RT for the most part starts easily..though not always. The Sherco is not as differcult to start as most people believe it just requires a different technique to starting a 2Stroke.
If you've started an XT500 the Sherco4T should be easy

Having ridden one and watched the Sherco go up muddy sections I disagree with the grip thing...I would hate to own one where there's lots of muddy cambers...far too sharp for my liking
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Having riden the bike for 6 months in the mudddy south of England can't say finding grip has been a problem, camber or not!
Perhaps its the rider

Hi
Had my Sherco 4T since June, have ridden a trial most weekends.
Replaced one thermostat.
Changed Oil every 4 trials.
Since i modified the carb' the bike starts fine hot or cold, no different to
any two stoke. No special procedere except NO throttle and use hot start lever.
Can be an absolute bitch to start if turned upside down as fuel poors into aibox or engine...best not to crash! Keihin carb helps sort this i believe.
Clutch is the best i've used, coupled with a silky smooth bottom end the bike finds grip where most others don't.

Ishy
Have had mine for a few months and competed in many trials and am well pleased with it.
Positves...
1. Motor is awesome...nice and soft off the bottom...massive power at the top end!
2. Clutch actuation is nice and linear..best i've used.
3. Grips like sh*t to a blanket, using IRC (fitted from new).
4. Best brakes i've come across.
5. Easy to work on, other than the valve clearance( once a year).
6. Easy to start, now!
Negatives...
1. Steering lock...poor compared to my last bike, Scorpa SY. Handles OK though.
2. Carb' seems erratic at times..almost like an old AMAL Conc'!!!!!
3. Suspension seems dated compared to others, Scorpa SY was better.
4. No 'top' rider competing on one to show how good the bike really is!

Thanks for the comments!
Yes, mine starts first time every time now....as it should do!
Not sure how long the motor takes to 'run in' but mine still seems to get better
every trial...nice and soft of the bottom, but with a massive top end. Ideal for
me.
Cheers

Anybody care to translate the Paxau website..appears to offer a Keihin conversion for the 4T

Bablefish struggles before someone suggests it!

Not sure where you've got this from, can you post a link?
I have a 4T and certainly won't be competeing in World Rounds on it!
The trials i do comptete in however have not caused the 4T any problems either through excessive heat or due to there being no mechanical oil pump.

Webmonkey
I don't know if the mod will sort out your particular problem as i haven't come across that particular starting issue with mine...yet.
If you think yor problem is likely caused by flooding/richness the mod may well help.
My issue was that the starting was seemingly random....often, first/second kick, then for no apparent reason would take several kicks. Not acceptable to me, so tried the mod outlined above.
RE500

Nope, from the Service Tips for the Sherco 4T.
Available from the Sherco website.
RE500

Sherco recommend...
'Change oil after the first 5 hrs, then after every 30Hrs'!!!!
I too have settled on changing oil every 4 th trial.
Did mime last night, elswhere on this forum it has been stated that the sump drain plugs on the 4T are NOT interchangable.
I have measured mine with a pair of verniers and they are identical, as you'd expect, any other 4T owner care to comment?

No need for pictures as its a very simple mod.
Remove the carb' float bowl and remove the choke jet.
The thread on the end of the choke jet is M5x0.8mm which is standard metric coarse.
Replace the choke jet with a M5 cap head screw of the right length, same as the jet. You must put a seal/o ring under the head of the screw to seal it. Note that the bolt head fits into a recess in the float bowl, you must use a cap head screw.
Alternatively, if you have a spare jet that fits you can simply solder the jet hole to blank it off and use this.
Reassemble carb'.
Thats it.
Now when you start the bike from warm/hot, simply put the 'choke' on, absolutley no throttle. One firm kick on compression and the engine will start.
It will run very fast for a few seconds, enough time to close the 'choke' and will then run as normal.
Now the downside ...you may need to find a different way to start the engine from cold ( there is no choke!).
However, this is normally just once, compared to ~40 times or more when warm/hot.
I just flood it by kicking a couple of times with the throttle open.
The kick with closed throttle.
Give it a try, i hope like mine it will transform the starting of your 4T bike.

Update
3 trials now using 'hot start' on my Sherco4T.....
SORTED..bike starts first kick every time, even in the hottest of
trials (last week 33C), no problems whatsoever.
2 trials this weekend..again faultless starting.
Such an easy solution, shame the factory didn't fit it, transformed my bike!

Very Interesting about valve clearance/decompressor effect
My 4T has always been hard to kickover, so, just measured the valve clearances and the exhaust clearance is miles out on both EX valves!
Both 0.35mm not 0.15mm seems so far out as to be very strange!
Anybody know what shims are available in the UK?
Cheers
