Sorry for late reply Gents.
I'm pleased to say that the Nachi's are still going strong.
Make sure you get the high temp (140C) seal ones Nachi Quest.

Hi Peter,
Hmmm...you've got me thinking now.....very smart stuff my friend...very smart indeed :rolleyes
I'll investigate a the potential of a loose needle as well ...some merit there too.
Neither of these two theories would account for why it clears after richening the mix or why it never shows an full tank of fuel...but who knows
Cope, I've been running 98 Octane Premium unleaded for the past 2 and half year.....And Castrol TT Racing oil for the past 12 months....I love em both

Hi Peter,
We've kinda covered that too
But more ideas are truly welcome
I believe the answer will come when when we take into account all the clues ....It's a challenge that I know you guys are upto

Thanks for your suggestions Peter.....but most of this has been covered, double-checked, tried and tested in pages 3 to 6 ;-)
Interestingly I have had a lot of success with the 3 tubes I use on my Keihin .....And I would recommend this (the way I did it) to anyone.

Hi Gents....here's an old thread....back from the dead
Just discovered something interesting these past couple of week.
On the odd occasion my bike starts hunting (just mildly now days and only when after an hour or so's riding) if I turn the air-mix screw all the way in (fully rich) then rev her up high to clear her out. When I turn the screw back again the bike runs OK.....not perfect but OK. I've done this three time recently and it's worked every time.
What do yo think gents? ....not a cure, but a workaround I think.
Clav, maybe you could try this on your keihin too??

I assuming you mean you still break the mudguards....not the cadle ties.

Neo

I've been meaning to write something about this for some time..... If you're fortunate enough to have broken your mudguard just above the screw holds you could always do what I do......
I hope you can work it out from the photo but I've put the end of the tail underneath the seat of the tail then drilled two holes through the mounting holes. You also have to cut out the plastic flap that covers the top of the air filter. And for "mud riders" I would recommend covering or filling that gap with something. I know it looks like s**t...but I'm not out impress anyone
The crazy thing is I did this to my 250 a year ago and did it to my 125 four months ago. But since then both tails seem to be unbreakable!!
And in support of what cope said....I purchase a new mudguard 3 months ago but haven't had to use it ;-)
So there you have it....the Broken-Unbreakable Mudguard ....Sherco take note

Does that include starting an 05 4T ??........or include the frame on the 06's .....having said this, as love is blind, I'm really with you on this Zippy
I think I'll just refer to the new baby as "The Ten"......hmmm I can see it now....."I must go and buy myself The Ten 250 today" and "I'm just popping out for a ride on the The Ten"......Hmmm...I'm getting tired of calling it that already
Best of "The Ten" balances!!!

Hi Tony,
Might be worth having a read of this
If the new Sherco 4T ends up with a battery it'll be one step behind the Gassa and the Mont.
The previous Sherco frame ran for 7 years......if they change this one now it would only be 4 years.....Maybe this reflects the change in times....maybe it's Xispa fight back....but I hope all the extra development costs don't drive the Sherco Trials division under.
"& doesn't overhang plastics like theirs"...can you tell me more about this?

Me too and the implications are quite big I think..... Firstly if Sherco are introducing a new frame at the same time as this "tank in the seat" change then this a big step by Sherco. The tank will be a the same level (and lower) as the carb....Does this mean Sherco will need a fuel pump and/or would it be better going fuel injection at the same time?
Rumors at one time were GasGas were working on a fuel injected 2-stroke.....maybe Sherco are taking up were they left off??.....certainly GasGas now having this on the new side-vale bike (coming soon!!) would indicate that these parts are available for Sherco to use.
Heat propagation between exhaust and fuel would be tough but with a modern heat reflective materials possibly Ok.
Along with all the other modifications they're doing I think flipping the cylinder 180 degrees would be too much design work. And in a Trials frame I cant see it having a better airflow that way. But with the fuel tap gone (for above the carb) I reckon there's enough space for good airflow from an Airbox above the carb.
But having owned two 06 Frames I just hope they get this new frame right first time.....Although I don't really see why Sherco would need a new frame to do any of the above so I have my doubts in that area too.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Cope,
Sorry I got some bad news from work a few days ago....so I haven't really been in the mood for working on bikes since.
There are lots of changes (which will be taking up my time) on way.....but as the T101 would say....."I'll be back"!!!

Hi Clav,WoW! Sounds like you've been having some fun with fire
Any chance of posting up some photo's of the holes you cut out?....or could you emiail them to me and I'll posted them up.
I'm curious....if you do a conpresson test and your compression comes out as good as mine did, why would you bother with a "freshen up"?

Neo

Well I suppose I don't completely.
All I know is when she's hunting I adjust the air mix (on the PWK) clockwise and the hunting stops (well almost) for a while then a few mins later she runs poppy (rich) and I adjust the airmix anti-clockwise and that makes it run smoother again. This variation can go back and forwards before it settles down or before I give up adjusting it and just ignore it...which make me ride like crap
I might invest in one of those glass window spark plug to see whats happening.

Hmmm....maybe....maybe not
Something I forgot to mention...... It was only when I took the plastic cover off of the flywheel that I realised that since owning this bike for 2 years the fly wheel cover had never been removed....not since the previous owner sealed it on with silicon. So it was like going back in time.......Before my eyes was an untouched shining flywheel....almost too good to use a rattle gun on
And the stator coils were just as clean and shiny as the flywheel too.....so it's hard to believe that this baby would give me trouble....but I'll keep an open mind for now.
Are your symptom similar to ours Ham? ....Let us know how you get on?

Hi Gents,
Looking at the design of the main seals there are two sealing edges. One sharp (angled, pointing outward) and the other much wider and flat. So I'd guess that these seals would only seal better if pressure was being applied from the outside, causing that sharp edge to press harder onto the shaft.
Getting the engine really hot then working with that header pipe is not my idea of fun and I'll have to find a non plastic cap for that too.....Otherwise things could get melted and messy ....But I might try this next weekend. Wife allowing....as it's our 23rd anniversary this weekend
But I tend to agree that if it held 32PSI it can't be that bad. Also remembering it would need a fair volume of air to lean out the mix on every stroke. Supporting this theory is the fact that both the throttle cable and the Carb cable tube are not sealed at all....yet most bike are not effected by air leaking past the slider.
Cope I'll empty the carb into a glass bowl again....It's always best to go back to basics when all else fails. But I know it can't be those vent tubes. As they've only been on there these past couple of month.
And questioning my own prognosis....Can anyone think of any faults that would be just like an engine running lean? .....Next time it starts hunting should I stop and take a look at the colour of the spark plug?....or would a glass windowed spark plug help me here?
Best of balance.

Hi All,
This is what I discovered ......nothing!!....no leaks found at all
Ok I've pictured my "Leak Down Kit" so I explain how I used it.
Fitted the "pump up" vale (as pictured) in the spark plug hole.
The yellow cap fits perfectly (with a bit exhaust paste) into the exhaust port (comes from a plastic petrol container which is very common in Aus). Then bolted the header pipe back on to hold the cap firm. I made an inlet plug out of some PVC waste pipe. Heated one end, put a bit of silicone in it the clamped it in the vice. It fitted snugly into the rubber inlet manifold. I also inserted a thin tie cord into a reed vale to make sure the valve stayed open. I then removed the flywheel and stator (great suggestion Stork!) and the bash plate.....then I got ready with the soap spay.
Lastly I put that yellow pipe on the oil breather, then into the little plastic container filled with soapy water....My theory here was that if the right hand seal was leaking the air would make it's way out via the oil breather and been seen in bubbles.
So...first problem.....I have no bicycle pump ...what the hell, use the electric tyre pump .
So a quick burst with that...oops she's hit 10psi already..."what the hell"... start spaying all over....Nothing
Hmmm.... "What concerns me about all this process is the bike normally starts hunting when it's hot. But this engine is cold"
Ok lets tun up the pressure oops she's hit 20psi now...what the hell... start spaying all over again....Nothing
Ok lets tun up the pressure oops she'd hit 35psi now ...what the hell... start spaying all over again....Nothing
She held that 35 PSI...and dropped to 32 PSI some 20 mins later....And I reckon the only reason it dropped at all was because I kept taking pressure readings
On the plus side....this is one hell of sealed engine I have .....On the negative side....I still don't know what's wrong with this bike
Stork what I meant by warm engine is an engine that's not really hot...say less than 15 mins of riding.
Even today the engine was hunting very mildly shortly after staring. I rode her for half an hour like that. Then 2 hours later I rode her again and she was as good as gold
So all I can say now gents is...."next idea please"

Hey Stork,...Thanks for your additional input....I knew I'd forgotten someone in my list of Knights in shining armour
Right Gents, I know Jon has mentioned this Leakdown (pump-up) test in other threads. And since then I've been itching to give it a go. But the soapy spray idea has convinced me really it's worth doing.
So last night I set about making a "pumping point" out of a drilled out spark plug and an inner tube vale stem. So with any luck tomorrow, being a rainy day, I'll finish it, plug up the holes and pump her up......Question is how many PSI?....or is it the more the merrier
And how slowly should this pressure drop?

By the way.....I cleaned up the Silencer box using common kitchen wire wool scouring pads (wet)....Brillo Pads they were called in the UK.
The process was quick and easy and the results are impressive ;-)
Oh and forgot to mention that I did the Jet Engine bit both belly side down and belly side up. But I reckon Belly side up (upside down to normal mounting) was the most effective gunk reducer.....as heat rises the gunk falls into the line of fire...literally

Hi Clav,
Sounds like you're doing a good job mate ...and hope this stays consistent for you.
Ok, my current settings are 120 Main, 45 pilot, JJH mid clip, running original reeds. But I have to say that my problem did not really go gradually. One week it was working great and the next it was hunting when hot. And now days, on a bad day, it hunts when it's warming up too.
It was originally running a 38 but hit 48 on the pilot before I decided I was doing the wrong thing. And I'm now getting the best results with a 45. But I remember trying a 35 for a while (almost 2 years ago) but the bike was too flat for me like that. I've never really played with the main jet....BTW I use BP Ultimate 98...how about you? And why does this problem show more (for me) when I'm below a third of a tank of fuel?
Also, I'm still considering new main seals because I don't like the way the engine runs fluffy (then I have to rev the engine clean) during the first 5 mins after starting. I didn't have to do this 9 months ago.
Another thing...if it was general engine wear of some form then a lot of Sherco's would have this problem by now...not just you and me
What we need is a knight in shining armour ....a Trials engine Sir Lancelot ....a lateral thinker and a solution provider .....Cope, Jon and Wayne, are you ready to take on the challenge?

Hi all,
Just been looking at the crank on the 2008 Spare parts book.
Does anyone know what these things are?...and what they do?

Ok...here's the update.
Bike sounds good ....bikes rides goodish, kinda.....but the hunting is still there on occasions....It's very mild now but still enough to feel when moving off. And as before, it seems to happen more when the fuel tank is below half.
There's one other thing I noticed. The bike used to rev up as if the very first part of the throttle (or very first part of the needle) was too rich....that brief flutter/pop has definitely gone now.
For me the next stop is the main bearing seals....I reckon I can get the old ones out without spitting the case ....Might give this a go next week....wish me luck
But if anyone has any more ideas please drop us a post?
Best of balance.

Hi Jon,
I've been mix it at 80:1 for a year and a half ...But I am not the original owner of this bike so who know what went in before. And the Silencer box has been a heavy weight for as far back as I can remember....it's so much lighter now.
I'll keep you posted ;-)
