Thanks Stork,
My 250's been behaving itself this week for 98% of the time. But I know I'll find this Lean/Rich problem eventually .....When I do you're all invited to a Trials party!!!
I'm keen to know if the de-coke will have any effect on this.....time will tell over the next few weeks.

Thanks Jon,
I've been using Castrol TT Fully Synthetic for about a year now. And when I took our 125 engine apart recently it was almost a clean as whistle...so I'm quite confident it's good stuff

Hi All,
I had a great time with the jet engine today ...But after filling with petrol, soaking and lighting I was disappointed how the pipe would not burn long enough to get really hot. So I moved to plan B.....I got a propane torch and heated up the intake then blew air in from that end. Then my son got another propane torch an lit the smoke coming out of the end pie. A minuet later the whole thing was glowing all the way inside .
We kept the outside of box cool and safe-ish by supporting it in wet sand with a wet cloth covering the top side. And kept the cloth wet while working so there was minimal sut on the outside of the box too....Most of the mini holes inside look clear now and I swear it weighs at least a Kilogram lighter.
I'll let you know how it's running later this week.

I dechoked the exhaust header pipe and box today...great fun!!...even with all the smoke
The header pipe was only about 5% blocked but the main box did look a bit gluey and clogged.
I'll do the compression test again when I get it all back together but I all I did last time was keep kicking the bike over till the compression gauge wouldn't go any higher (about 5 or 6 kicks)...not sure if this is the right or wrong way but that's what I did.
Also, with the "wandering mixture" thing...what about Cope's previous theory of leaking mains bearing seals??...seems like a good possibility to me.

Hi David,
Nope...I'm not keen on Bach Buster ...not sure why you ask?
Where do you buy AFAM bars from ...I never heard of them?
Also, Can anyone state with confidence that FAT bars are definitely stronger (less likely to bend in a crash) than regular bars?

If you covered the exhaust in a wet fire blanket and kept watering it down wouldn't that stop the case getting too hot?
Or would it just reduce the cleaning/burning effect inside the box?
It is it worth a go?
Also, I assume there is no packing material in a Sherco box?

I just use Castrol TT fully synthetic ....and I didn't see any rust while I was in there.
I have you tied riding your bike 4 times ad day

I will add that I don't believe a PWK can be completely cleaned out unless you remove those two tamper proof screws.
I was shocked at how many holes and pin-holes where under there. I reckon even water could stay trapped in that area.

Hi All,
I'm trying to choose my next set of Handle Bars....Here's my selection criteria in order of priority...
1. Must be strong...I can't hack these bars that bend after a biggish drop (like Domino and Hebo bars).
2. Must have a a good (low arm pump) bend/shape
3. 7/8" preferred otherwise I'm up for spacers/converters or a new top triple clamp.
7/8" bars I like the look of so far...
The Sherco bars....Low cost, strong...happy with the bend....but I'm bored of the bars
Jitse....low cost, include a bar pad, lots of colours to choose from.....but I don't know the bend or the strength of these bars?
Renthal....high cost, supposed to be the best, .....but I don't know the bend or the strength of these bars either?
So what's your opinion?...and are fatbars unbendable (or very hard to bend)?

Yes I remember doing this some time back. But it still ran lean for me and I wasn't keen on the power delivery either.
I know where your coming from Clav .....I just wish I could put my finger on something definite with this issue.
I was just re-reading your first post below.....your issue is so close to my own it's not funny ....but I'm struggling to think what this proves....I wonder if Sherco did anything on their new bikes when they went over to the the PWK?

Hi Cope,
I originally set the tubes high-then-low because one day I was doing a very steep decent (which I came to a stop on) and noticed petrol pouring all over the front mudguard. And I realise I had been losing a lot of fuel while riding with this carb. Because on a very steep decent the angel of the carb is virtually horizontal.
I've taken the wide tubes right down past the bash plate but they don't have to be that long. I've never seen any fuel coming out of them. Even after many foreword/backward crashes. But after the high-then-low part the shorter the tubes are the less likely the mud can get up to them.
I reckon your right about the 125 too... it's and engine that's too good to be true.

Actually it's a Tygon pink that came with the OKO kit.
I rarely ride in mug...and never in water.
It's my Keihin 28...It was setup the wrong way round when I first got it. So I had to drill the second vent and idle screw out anyway. And since then I have re-drilled both vents about as large as I dare. Oddly enough the OKO 24 has only one vent but never suffers from any breathing problems. And I can't remember the last time I adjusted the airmix on that Carb.
No sorry Cope I haven't tried out the OKO 24 on the 250 yet. Because when my bikes running right I find it hard to mess around with it. But I hope to try the OKO24 out in the next few weeks.

Hi Cope,
On this first photo you can see the smaller tubes going into the wider ones.
And can also see the sping I use on the spring I use to stop the RH vent tube kinking and protect it for the heat.
On this second photo you can see how I keep that RH hose up high.
Let me know what you think?

Maybe we live at different altitudes or something but since fitting the tubes (to both of my vents) I

This is double interesting (and confusing) Cope.
Ok logicality the bowl would only get contaminates from the fuel line or the vents but....
1. My fuel line is black but still in very good condition....but I'll fit a new one anyway.
2. My vents are piped high, then low (down wide hoses) all the way down to the delta link...there just ain't enough vacum to suck anything up those tubes.
3. Shiny blacks and reds didn't come from the ground around here.
4. The particles are way too big to have passes through the Sherco filter in the tank.
5. I also found one shiny black particle on the intake side (before the slide) of the carb.
So logicically it looks like the Jitse air filter to me....but it's illogical how these bits ended up in the bowl
The 250 ran great this afternoon. But I didn't have enough time to fine tune the airmix before the heavens opened up and brought my ride to an abrupt end

Wow Stork,
That's really interesting. But you'll have to explain to me how the high reading indicates a decoke?
I'll check out the chain saw hose...what's it made of?

Hi Cope,
I started by cleaning the carb on the outside (with a toothbrush) before opening anything. Then I pored every drop out through the vents into a glass jar. Then again just as the float bowl was opening....But a long hard stare into the jar revealed nothing.
Then I removed the bowl and looked inside and bingo!!!...Shiny black and red partials inside the big nut....Now guess what colours that Jitse airfilter has on it....Yep black and red. The partials were also a soft rubber so no real harm I guess.
Also the compression test was a real ripper (ozzie expression) and hit 215 PSI!!....so there can't be too much wrong in that department.
Anyway it was too dark to test the bike tonight.....shame there wasn't a full moon ...so I'll see how she runs tomorrow afternoon. But it does look promising
Best of balance to all.

Well I ride almost every day.....but I never ride the crap out of my bikes....I love em too much for that
Thanks for all the replies gents....if I do a compression test does anyone know how much pressure I should get on the gauge?
Cope...main seals....hmmm got me thinking....but if the main seals are going wouldn't I see some smoke and would blocking off the engine breather tube make the engine stabilise after a while?
Neil....it's worse when the engine is warm but a bit more stable when it's really hot.....having said this.....taking a break can sometimes cure it for 10mins or so.
So I'm rolling the selves up tonight...simple things like Compression test....Then clean out the carb (AGAIN!) and check for water....how do I see water in petrol?
I seem to remember it was raining, time before last, when I rode....maybe I've failed to make this connection in the past

Thanks tryalsryder and NZRalphy,
But the the carb on this bike has been changed three times and all 3 were cleaned out many times since this problem originally came about ( maybe a year ago). Since then it's always disappeared after trying something new. But it's always come back again after some time. This time was specific to fitting a new Jitse Airfilter and the old Sherco one was getting crummy. Oddly enough the past few weeks has been the best it's every run.
I'm really referring to past post with Copemech as he might remember this situation from the past.
Cope...it might (or might not) be a good time to try out that 24mm OKO?...what do you think?

I think my two Sherco's are competing for attention.
I problem on my 250 that I previously thought I had fixed has has come back to haunt me ...just after I fitted a new air filter.
The air mixture is continually varying too rich, too lean, too rich, too lean, too rich, too lean!!!!...but is getting leaner and leaner and the airmix screw (on the PWK28mm) is hitting the stop now. I've been down this road many many times now and I think I done just about EVERYTHING I can to find this problem. But today I had a brain wave...
If a 28mm venturi is getting a little large for a 250 (border line a the best of times) then maybe if the piston rings are starting to wear with age and the compression is fading. Then the the air speed through the carb would be dropping and give a leaner mix. To support this theory I've noticed that the bike has been easier to kick over these past few months.
A possibility....or am I deluding myself?
