I thought the same when I first fitted mine. So I double checked the model number stamped oin the box and the tank and it was the correct one. If you look at my blog pictures, it shows a space of about an inch between the bottom of the tank and the saddle of the bike. Is this to what you are referring?

In addition to what you say:
Consistely be able to lift the front wheel.
Front wheel hop with back wheel held static.
All of it will make a huge difference on the single track. I have a Rev 4T with seat/tank and its fantastic on single track trails. Around here, a number of the mountain bike areas are open to trials bikes and the Beta just eats it up, lots and lots of fun.

How's your spanish? SOme
Looks like they build 5 or 6 bikes at a time...

pkelyman, for encouragement, here is some bad eveil frenchmen poking aroud the hills and valleys.
It almost does not matter what you buy it will be great. If its a bit of a handful, put on a slower throttle tube, it makes a big difference (and its cheap). Once you get the hang of it, put the other one back on.
Here is a directory of clubs. Just start calling around, go to an event, hang out with the juniors to see what its like. You'll also find guys like me who just like to enjoy the woods. There are lots of us out there.

250 is more than fine. You 'll be surprised how much of a difference a 250 trials will be compared to your KTM especially if you are a lugger. I use mine all the time for tight single track riding and having fun, barely use my EXC now.
And for competition, bah, dont listen to the grumps. Do what you want. Life is about having fun. I poke around every hill and valley I can find.

I see a 96 Beta Techno 250 for sale. Just rebuilt, seals, tire, etc. Good price for its age. Anything to watch out for with these bikes? It'd make a nice loaner for my sponge buddies.

Hey Portman, I basically run the tanks that way. Not best for CG, but I am not that sensitive. The extrended range tank only has on/off.
-
pindie, - ya gotta read the thread! He said he fixed it. CDI. :-)
-
Very interesting that the bike would still spark with a bad CDI - perhaps its timing was off or too low power. Glad you got it figured out.
-
Portman, your year might be different. My manual says
"The capacity of the fuel tank is approximately 2.2 litres, of which 0.35 litres is reserve" - it also lists this amoun in the specs.
But I notice your 2012 EVO 4T manual says (on page 50)
"The capacity of the fuel tank is approximately 2.5 litres."
No mention of reserve anywhere in the manual.
So in this case you might want to consider a fuel valve. Another option is to put an electrical switch going to the electric fuel valve. If having both tanks "on" the fuel would likely pull from both depending on fuel height in the tanks - although I have never experimented with this.
-
Thanks for the ideas guys. I will give it a go.
-
Before installing a fuel tap, I would try opening the aux tank tap first though, and leave the main tank in "off" (fuel only flows with bike on). Hopefully it wont force gas out the main tank vent. Because the aux tank is higher, it should take gas out of the aux tank first until the two become level, and then drain from both. Giving you optimal CG without having to mess with fuel taps. By leaving the main tank in "off" it will also leave you with a small reserve too.
-
*sigh* I can't wait. So if a manufacturer says "May" they usually mean "end of May". Thats another six weeks of waiting for information...
-
The Beta DOES have a reserve setting (at least my 08 4T does with the electric fuel tap). When the main tank electric tap is switched to OFF (which lets fuel flow only when the engine is running), it will drain the tank to the reserve level. To access the reserve gasoline you have to flip the little lever all the way up to the manual on setting.
When the engine is off and the fuel is in the off, no fuel flows so you shouldn't need to install another valve.
-
Thanks. I just did what you said, seems to work fine.
-
I have a 08 Rev 4t with LRT I use exclusively for the single track woods riding. I love it! I am sure the Monty would be good too, its just I got this Beta on a really good deal. Here are some pics of the long range tank/seat install.

That's great info. It reminds me of a clutch drag problem that was happening with DR350s. I will tear the clutch down (again) and take a closer look. Then fill it with ATF.
-
I haven't tried ATF yet though. Will this help? Suggestions on brand/spec?
-
The clutch on my 2000 TXT 280 is a real pain. Sure a little drag is fine, but this is too much, it stalls all the time and will not (at all) go into neutral. The hydraulics have all been rebuilt and bled. Its solid as a rock. I even worked on smoothing out the clucth basket. I pulled the plates and they are all within spec.
What else can I do? (besides buy another bike).
thanks

Anyone know when they'll be available in Europe? I would like to hear some first hand ride reports.
-
I put up a blog post on the tank/seat, including pictures of the fuel line and the installation instructions.

Yes you need to pull the tank for filter maintenance. I pull mine on/off all the time. Undo the gas cap, undo two bolts, then disconnect the fuel line. NOTE: I put a barbed junction in the fuel line between the aux tank and the plastics on the bike. This makes it much easier to take the tank off. If you want to remove the tank and then use the bike "au naturel" (e.g. a competition) you will have to plug the fitting.
-
I dont have an OSSA (impatiently waiting for the explorer), but on my other trials bikes, I get about an 1.5hrs ride time when out on the trails on the single track. The beta has a long range tank, so that increases it up to 4hrs. The GG has a hebo 1litre tank on the front, which increases it to about 2hrs. The OSSA is probably similar.
Get a couple of 1litre bottles (like camping fuel stove bottles) and put them in a pack on your back. Or you can mount a couple of bicyle water bottle holders to the front and mount the bottles there.

I like this idea. Those nuts are a PIA especially when doing field repairs, they knock off too easy and can fall in the muck. I was thinking of tack welding them in place, but the cage nuts sound easier...
-
Although your fan motor sounds siezed - I went through a few fans because voltage spikes would fry the windings. I ended up putting in a capacitor to smooth out the voltage and since then no fan problems.
