Mine I think it's because you've got the wrong colour
I think the raptor ones are nice, but expensive. Have you tried a pair of footrests that are adjustable in 3 positions by S3 or the CNC machined ones that are set back, Future, Piddocks sell them I think, cheaper than the hangers. I've got the S3 ones set to furthest setting back, not a massive difference from standard, but still make a difference?

Everyone keeps going on about the youth being the future of our sport and we should satisfy their needs, concerning the rules, stop or no stop. I disagree, it's not the youth that are the future, it's anyone new to the sport, or who comes back into it, what ever their age or sex.
I wasn't a young rider when I started, my parents couldn't afford it, I got into trials when I was about 26, after riding road bikes since the age of 16 (my only transport for 10 years) I was always keen on motorcycle sport and watched scrambles down at Matchams and Trials in my local area of Ringwood as a young lad and road racing whilst serving in the Airforce in Germany. I had a few trials bikes in the 90's (TY, Fantic 205) and enjoyed riding for about 3 years before leaving to race Parakarts for 7 years. I then returned in 2000 and had another 4 years (3 new Monts and a Scorpa) before spending 5 years on road bikes again, travelling around Europe. Once again I have returned to trials with my new Mont 4RT (always wanted one) and am really enjoying it again. During the off times, I still went to watch WTC and BTC aswell as many local club trials and observed for my local club about 3 or 4 times a year.
The future of the sport of trials and Clubs, is its members, it matters not, what age or sex they are, but I think it's the older riders that make up the core numbers, as they have the cash, whereas the youngsters, loose interest, discover girls/boys, alcohol, get jobs, go to uni or can't afford it now dads not paying (but hopefully they'll be back one day). The main thing for all of us, is to support the clubs with any help we can offer, ride the events and support the dealers to keep them in business. Thank the organisers for their time and effort and thank the observers for observing and giving their time, so we can enjoy our riding.
No matter what rules we ride, or want to ride, we all have something in common, we love trials. Let's not take it for granted that someone else will always do all the hard work, otherwise one day we'll wake up to nothing.
Happy New Year to you all, I hope you all enjoy trials in 2012, and beyond (my first trial of the year is on Monday the 2nd :bouncy: )

You don't own or have owned a 4RT then !!!
They most certainly don't share the same oil and each of the oils is completely different.
Check the oil when it's warm, but don't ride it if it's not showing anything on the dip stick. Top it up with a syringe, a little at a time, until it's showing about half full. Start it up and let it tick over for a couple of minutes, switch off, leave it for 5 minutes and check again and top up to the top mark. If after riding it and checking it again, the level has dropped substantially,or is no longer showing, check the gearbox oil, coolant and overflow tank and air box if you tipped the bike over or fell off with the engine running.
I hope it's nothing serious and you get it sorted.

So, with Alfredo Gomez not getting Montesa bikes for 2012 (p*** poor timing for Alfredo), Fabio Lenzi leaving the Future Montesa team and Laia Sanz, now on the Gas Gas, how long before, either Honda pull the plug on Montesa, or show continued interest in motorcycle trials with the launch of a new bike.
Personally I'd like to see Honda continue, (I love my 4RT) In my personal opinion, they should ditch the Montesa name and sell the new bike as a Honda RTL, because thats what effectively they have been and would be (Its not like Honda dont have any history or success in trials is it). I dont think they would, as the name doesnt really make that much difference, we all know there Hondas in all but name. Toni would no doubt still win many more WTC on it, question is, will 2012 be Do or Die?
Do,
I hope so,
for the little (relatively low cost) of 2 x world championships per year, company prestige and for all of us Honda fans. I would imagine Repsol money is keeping the team going and let's face it, they only really need one world champion.
I fear this may not be the case though (history is repeating itself :0( and Honda is getting back into F1) ironically, the 4RT is quite popular where I ride, I know of 7 being bought in the last couple of months and good used ones are like rocking horse s**t.
-
Let's face it, The importers don't sell used bikes do they, their in the buisiness of selling new bikes. The importers know who are buying New Bikes and it ain't the youngsters, it's the middle age male. Yes, he buys his son a new bike occasionally, but most new bikes are sold to middle aged males with the money to buy. That's who their targeting this change, make the sport a bit easier and you'll sell more bikes. Which class of rider has the most in your club? The last trial I did, the O40 clubman etc had the most riders and most of the new bikes were ridden by them.

I have to say I agree with Alex, I much prefer No Stop and remember the WTC when it had no stop, but after thinking about it from his point of view, I have to agree, to compete with everyone else in the WTC, they need to be riding very difficult sections. I would like to see all the man made sections taken out of all the WTC and eventually go back to no stop.
Of course, the decision has now been made, so the experiment will begin, we'll see who doesn't want to play, but I fear, the riders won't have a choice, the sponsor will, and some have already had a year or so away doing other nationals championships, due to their sponsors or team.
I love to see the trick riding, but the indoor championship is it place IMHO. Difficult no stop sections can still be spectacular, but, Whatever the rules, the riders will adapt their riding skill to it and move it forward.
-
Apparently, Grimbo has won, well done Graham.
-
As for old farts running the show, when are all the younger representitives going to step forward into organisational roles and steer the sport into better times and sustain it. Look at the average age of officials and observers. The recent meeting at Rugby was again lacking in representation from riders voicing the opinion of their clubs as to which direction they feel is best, but yet again they're all too ready to raise their voices in disaproval of the decision voted in by those that were there.
The BTC and WTC are dead in the water and going nowhere under the current format. Going no-stop for the BTC will prove whether it is the right decision over the next couple of years with the number of entries received. If it works all well and good, if it doesn't what has been lost, it's petty well dead already.
-
I believe it was tried before and didn't work as per the fore mentioned reasons.
-
Really pleased with this, (I remember the recent past riders, like Doug and Grimbo etc were pretty dam good at it) it's much nicer to watch IMHO, the rider flows over the section, without all the faffing about stopping etc etc. If you want to see ridiculous big steps etc, then we've still got the indoor WTC and the two should be completely separate.
I'm also pleased to hear about the minders, not because I don't care about the riders safety, it just annoys the hell out of me seeing them messing with the sections, the sections should be ridden as they are, without being interfered with, by either the rider or minder. Also, without all the minders being in/around the section, maybe we might get a better view of the rider riding the sections.
Undoubtably things will be a bit hit and miss in the first year, but riders will adapt to the new rules and it will be the riders skill and intelligence that will win the day, not necessarily the one with the best minder or team. Grimbo use to ride quite a bit without a minder and was still in contention of winning, or won.

Thanks everyone, returned chain and bought Renthal R1.
-
No its not anymore, but the 2012 map is good enough.
-
Just bought an IRIS 520 gold chain for my 4RT, fitted it this morning and have found that the rivets are snagging on the chain guard and the tensioner rubber. I haven't ridden the bike yet, but I would imagine I'll be ending up needing a new guard and tensioner rubber pretty soon with this situation. I'm not particularly happy about this, as obviously it's not a problem with the original chain. Should I be returning the chain and asking for one that doesn't do this, am I entitled to do this, even though i have fitted it to my bike (not used) Do any other makes of chain do the same thing ?
What seems strange to me, is that IRIS sponsor the Montesa Team, so you would have thought this wouldn't be an issue on the 4RT !!!

If, as you admit, your not going to be wining anything soon, then it doesn't really matter what bike you have, get the one you really want, because as long as you enjoy riding it, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, it's your money, treat yourself ;-). If you get a Mont Repsol Rep, get the 9T front and a 43T rear sprocket (slows it down nicely), then enjoy. I'm a novice with a Repsol Rep, loving it, have added a flat tank and Mitani Ti header pipe (look on eBay, as occasionally they pop up for sale at a bargain price), you don't need them, but it looks the dogs with them. If you go for the Gasser, then you already know what to expect.

Please don't take things personally, or maybe your not ! I've had many 2 strokes and in my experience, the 2 stroke engines don't feel or sound nice after a season or two, there built to a price and quality isn't at the top of the priority list. I know the OSSA has only been out for a year, but the one I saw recently that was well used, didn't sound nice, but I could be wrong and the 280 could be the first new bike that's "quality" manufactured and lasts well. The shercos are a prime example, they look nice, but the engines sound awful after a while. The Mont's a quality bike and I haven't heard a bad one from the few I've seen, except possibly Rob Warners :-) which is thrashed to within an inch of its life every time he rides it, but, it's still going strong, which I hope Rob won't mind me saying, is a miracle ;-).
Basher asked the question and I responded with my opinion, I'm sure they'll be some OSSA owners along soon that will sing its praises and give their opinions too, which will be more qualified than mine will ever be, as I've never had one. The Mont is well known to be the best built trials bike and is very reliable, but probably not the best bike you can buy today, still a bloody good bike for your average rider.
There have been problems with the first years bikes, just like every other manufactures new bikes, but the 2012 OSSA bikes have had alot of new parts, so hopefully these will all be fixed now.
The main thing is personal preference, I wanted reliability, quality and ownership satisfaction. It makes me smile every time I ride it, I'm no expert, just a middle aged wobbler, who is out most Sundays to have a little fun with some mates. If Honda pull the plug on Montesa (which they could), you would still be able to get parts for years to come, if OSSA went bust tomorrow (which they possibly could in the current financial mess europes in) you might find it very difficult to get parts. It's a great bike made by a small company and is a relatively low volume seller (probably due to the price more than any other reason). Life would be boring if we all liked the same things.
-
I was all up for the OSSA, but what made my mind up was the test ride on the Mont, I just loved it, felt really comfortable and rock solid, the suspension is just superb and the motor is really nice. I've done about 14 hours on it now and I have no regrets what's so ever. I never got a go on the OSSA, and don't really want a go now, I'm sure its really nice, but it won't feel as good after a few years like the mont will. The bike I test rode, is an 08 and gets used 2 days a week every week, it's well used but well maintained and rides like a dream. It's had nothing go wrong, just gets the required service and oil changes, that's it, does have the obligatory 4RT trick bits though.
I would suggest you wait until your fit to try what your interested in if you can, but to be honest, these two bikes are like black and white, I cant imagine they'll feel in anyway similar and you may hate one and love the other.
Heads or Tales ? ;-)
-
You are thinking exactly how I was about 2 months ago. I really liked the OSSA but was put off by all the issues I had read about, I also have always wanted a Montesa 4RT, so when it came to the crunch, I was very fortunate to get a go on a 4RT and was hooked and am now the proud owner of a 2012 Repsol Replica, I love it :-).
I think the 2012 OSSA has been sorted now, (although I have heard there's still a clutch problem and the factory bikes are eating gearboxes) but it looks a very nice bike and I think you'd be very happy if you bought one. The 2012 Mont has had some very minor mods (lighter rear wheel and different fuel map) and rides really nice with a 9/43 sprocket combination (which I think is a must do change from the first ride). No bike is perfect and everyone has their favourite, try them and buy what YOU like.

RIP Marco, thankyou for the joy you gave, in the short time you had.
-
There are cheaper, lighter and better bikes, but what is more important, for me, every time I get on my 4RT I love it, it's the best bike I've ever had. I nearly bought the Ossa before i got the Mont, never got the chance ride one, but after having a good go on a well set up Mont, i was hooked and made my decission easy (cost aside) If you think it's a great bike, get a new one, you'll still love it, if your tired of it, try something else, but you might regret it ;-) the mont is definitely a marmite bike, but I know 7 owners and they all love them.
