cool thanks for that,.
I don't like the idea of it eating rubber parts etc, so I will try the degreaser first. if that doesn't work tho, Mr muscle to the rescue lol.
cheers
-
yes I know about he nitromors thing, what with the chemicals and tree huggers etc?.
ive managed to get some proper paint stripper its called "starchem synstryp" if you are looking for the decent stuff, which works like the old nitromors used to.
I will give the paraffin and degreaser a try, I really don't want to be stripping the engine, just to clean it up, to be honest.

Define grubby?
well its the ingrained stuff on the outside of the cylinder/ main engine crankcases, its not rust, more like engrained in dirt/peat staining.
Ive used alloy wheel cleaners in the past and to be honest, most of them were pretty p*** poor, the spray on foam type.
Ive got some gunk ultra degreaser and some parrafin, which have both worked well in the past. I also used to use some stuff out of the 99p shop called elbow grease, which also worked fairly well.
I suppose a few hours with an old toothbriush and parrafin should do it, but I just wondered if technology had moved on.
Obviously not

Hello, I was looking for recommendations for some wonder product, - capable of cleaning up grubby cast engine parts.
The less physical exertion the better, any recommendations?
Alloy wheel cleaner any good, or what do you use. I want it like new again, if possible.
Thanks

Howdee diddlee doo.
I decided to treat myself. Just bought this, its a 2017 model. its downsides are a very small scratch in the fork stanction,(seals not affected, just cosmetic,) and a little bit of play on the linkage, but for the price (read-very cheap), I couldn't - not buy it.
Think ive done the right thing. Cant wait for delivery.... Wooo hooo.
-
yes it brushes up well, doesn't look like its done much.
Do we know if the later 2018 300rr 3 ring piston can be retro fitted to an earlier 300rr, to solve the oil use issue, just out of interest?
I don't suppose they would have made any other bore or stroke changes, but I could be wrong...anyone know?

Hello, im getting back into the sport, and need a new helmet.
When I did trials about 15 years ago I used a shoei tr trials helmet, and it was great, quality design vents that worked etc.
Unfortunately I put it on the end of my handlebars when checking out a section, the bike fell off its stand and punched a neat handlebar sized hole through the shell.
Anyway my budget wont stretch to another shoei, so ive been looking at the airohs. They look like kryten from red dwarf designed them, but you cant have everythiing
I have a few questions for you.
Are the liniings removable? I would hope so, but none of the ads really say.
2nd the vents, do they work?
3 anyone broken one by crashing,? in other words, hows the quality of them?
it says in the ads that a 61cm head is a large, but usually its XL, so I presume they are on the tight side size wise. In other words, my noggin is 61, what size should I go with, it says 59-61 is large then 62-64 is xl, im thinking XL?
It also says on some ads there are TRR model and TRR_S. whats the difference, if any?
thanks for any input.

for your radiator issue, have a look at "riv -nuts".
I don't know exactly what you have but these riv nuts are really usefull for multiple applications and and they hold fast
-
oh ok, thanks, I didn't know that.
-
And the reason you are telling me this is????
was there a problem with the 2 ring design or something?
-
or if you have no fuel getting to the cylinder, check the fuel pump, they have been known to pack in...
-
well ive seen a couple advertised locally.
one is a base model 2018 for 4300, but when I contacted him, turns out Its sold,..he just never removed the ad.,,,,,,,,,,,bugger
another is a 2016 300rr which is local and has pitched up for 4750. looks clean....very clean …....tempting...

I don't think it will fit. the tank cover deffo wont, the tanks a different shape for a kick off, and the silencer cover also looks different. airbox cover might I suppose, but the mitani stuff, it looks like its unobtainium these days. pity, because its really well made, unlike the cheapo stuff. I gave away my mitani titanium front pipe when I sold my last 4rt, bit gutted about that but you never know what the future holds,
I thought I was done with trials. but theres life in the old dog yet....
I will keep you updated, I might hold out a month or two, and just go for a new one. ive got a few road bikes/projects that I will never get round to doing, so I think im gonna sell a couple, and put the money towards a new one...
-
I was out in the garage earlier, cleaning up and came across a box of trials bits, including chain, spark plugs, levers, 10t gearbox and a 40 and 41 rear sprockets,, cpouple of inner tubes, some grips, chain blocks oil filters, a clutch master cylinder, some anodised ****, and a load of mitani silver cabon I kept when I sold my last 4rt. I even had some old fantic 240 stuff in there lol .its been a while....
I remember it cost a fair bit, back. I suppose at least the filters, spokes and sprockets etc will fit the newer one, which is a bonus....
I best get looking for a good deal on a mint standard model I suppose..
thanks for your advice, much appreciated....
-
just had a look on ebay, 240 quid for a repsol top and triousers?
Jeez, Toni Bou must be well paid with that sort of mark up....
-
my brother has just bought one. (a 300rr). its mint. Having a shot of it was the spark that re-ignited my enthusiasm.
it was really nice, but a little bit too much oomph off the bottom of the throttle for me on map 1 - too snappy. I ride sections slowly compared to a lot of riders.
I tried both maps and found map 2 (supposedly the faster/ more fiery map) easier to ride off the bottom of the throttle for some reason , maybe I was just getting used to it...
the suspension on it was very, very good, but I never rode it through any sections, was just dicking about up some steps etc.
My riding skills or lack of, wouldn't justify the extra expense/ or poke of a 300rr to be honest.
-
thanks for the honest opinion.
I kinda agree about the repsol colour scheme, its bogging.
I guess im gonna take your advice and see whats out there. im looking for something with very little use, like new condition, or maybe even treat myself to a spanking new one...ive had enough of buying others peoples problems, by buying cheap....I see last yr models for 5300 on the bay......new...….
-
ive had montesas since 2002, when I got back into trials for the first time (did3 years in schoolboys, and had a bultaco Sherpa...that's how old I am lol).
Altho they are not the lightest or most competitive bike, I did love my 4rt, even tho I had better results on my 315, theres just something about them.
I think I will go with a year or two old model, either the base model or a repsol. depending on what comes up, within my budget.
is there really much difference between these options, that a fat 53 year old would notice? I suspect the base model would be more than good enough for me...but im willing to listen to the voices of experience.
-
Thanks for the quick replies.
Was there an issue with the 14/15 fuel pump?
what year did they reduce engine braking, and is it noticable? was this the revamped 260 of 2014 ish.
my old 4rt had a lot of engine braking and it could cause problems for me when I was just wanting to roll off the throttle and found it would almost stop dead.
-
hello, ive been away from trials for a number of years now, but am looking to make a return. My brother has just bought a 300rr, and it seems a bit more sharp off the bottom than I remember my old 4rt was, but it was while ago.. The suspension was excellent tho, I have to say, front and back.
I had a couple of 4rt's before , a 2005 and a 2008 model. my 2005 was a better bike, because it was newer to me and had seen less abuse than the 08.
I was looking at the 4rts and noticed things havnt changed much outwardly.
Ive also done a bit of reading up and most opinions are to go with a repsol as it has better suspension and rims. however, I am on a budget, i.e im not keen on spending an extra grand for some repsol graphics and a better set of wheels.... I was wondering just how much difference there is, in the real world, for a fat, fifty year old clubman doing the B route (I suspect 0.001%, but am cynical).. I mean between the base model and the respsol? would It be noticeable?
What haves the 2020 models got that the 2013/14/15/16/17/18 doesn't , apart from the obvious bold new graphics? I know they claim a lot, but noticeable? honestly?
Let me know your thoughts, for those with experience of the newer models and with experience between the repsol and base model please.
Honest opinions appreciated.
