I am 200lbs and ride a 250. I am a total newb. I think a 250 is a good size. The other day I borrowed a 2001 GasGas 280 and I wouldn't recommend the 280 for a beginner. It was much "zippier" than my old 250. I found it hard to control at slow speeds and I over shot several tight turns because of the way it surged forward.

Thanks guys. I tried the kill switch, same thing. I still ride with the fellow that I bought the bike from and he said he had an issue at the CDI like lineaway suggested. He had to put never seize or something similar on the plugs to make better contact. It is all gone now. The plugs is not a very tight fit that's for sure.

I had plans to ride with a friend and another local trials rider we just met last night. So yesterday I started the bike and rode it around the yard a few times since I haven't ridden it since my bicep surgery. But when we got there, my bike wouldn't start. Upon inspection today there is no spark. Luckily my new acquaintance has a 2001 GasGas 280 as a backup bike he let me ride.
I was wondering if anybody that owns an older bike might have an idea on what to check first? I replaced the plug and checked the cap. It's weird that it ran and I shut it off, now it won't spark. I am not sure how to check the single wire kill switch but I will google that now.

Great looking bikes Seavoyage. Wish I had those forks for my GT25.
-
I have a 2010 EC250 and love it. I weigh 210# and it has more than enough power for the Pennsylvania trails.
-
Tested out my exhaust turn down elbow. My elderly neighbor was getting annoyed at the noise while I practice in the yard haha. Seems to help some actually. More than re-packing the silencer did anyway.

Trials helmets are pretty rare in my part of the US so I had this one shipped from the Splatshop. A little over $100 US shipped and took about 2 weeks. I really like it.

Good luck. My 1992 needs them as well and I was told Gas Gas no longer has them available, for mine at least. Yours has different forks so you may get lucky. Mine are such an odd size I spent days trying to cross-reference a bushing from a different bike and can't find any this size (39mm OD x 36mm ID x 20mm height with 1.5 mm thickness). I ended up having some made from brass. Not ideal but otherwise this bike is junk because the bushings allow so much movement the forks leak and I have no front brake due to that.

Generally just going up, or down, 1 tooth on the countershaft your chain will be fine the length it is. That isn't always 100% the case of course, especially if your chain is worn already and stretched some. But the most times I have only ever had to change the chain length is when I change the rear sprocket by 2 teeth or more.

Slapped the new clutch in, works perfectly now. It's sure nice to be able to stop in gear. I had too many close calls with my tool box in the garage riding the bike back in LOL. Problem solved now.

The white fork braces on my pictures are OEM but the fender isn't. So unless yours are the newer red style I'm told is available as a fender/brace unit for $186, it isn't stock. I really like yours.
That FMF is nice. Wish I could tig weld haha.
Cool video, thanks for posting that!

Straightened the bent side stand and found the cause for my clutch drag:

He does say he took the carb completely apart but I tend to agree with you. I mentioned the crank seal because the description fit the diagnosis but it very well could be carb related. I used to be a mechanic I am just not overly familiar with these Gas Gas engines yet.
-
What does the plug look and smell like when you pull it after it stalls?
I am not very familiar with these gas gas engines yet, but I suggest you check the crankcase oil level, also look on the stator side for oil behind the flywheel. I say this because it sure sounds like a possible crank seal leak.
-
Also what silencer is on your bike? Mine is really loud and can't really be re-packed easily.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I mentioned they were Yamaha fenders. I have since replaced the rear with the proper fender. I am having some issues with a front fender. the braces on mine are broken and you can't buy them anymore. So my only option is to spend $185 on a fender/brace combo. What kind are on yours? They look great.
I am having those clutch issues. I changed the oil with 5w30 but think I will try ATF. Even after a 15-20 minute ride it won't disengage.
How it looks right now (well it has new grips and a new front tire since this picture):
-
The difference is oil vs fluid (transmission in this case). They are not the same, so synthetic in one is not like synthetic in the other.
-
Beauty! I too like clean bikes (no stickers or graphics).
My other bike is an XR650L dual sport.
-
New front tire. Dunlop 803 (I think):

That waterfall was scary .

Not many posts in this thread but I'm bored.
1992 Gas Gas GT25. Needs a front tire and a front fender (had a yamaha fender rigged on the fit was horrible):
