The Bultaco factory did not exist in 1985 as they officially closed the doors in early 84 but were really finshed way before this.
The last production bikes were built in late 81 into 82-83 ish (198A +199A) even then they were using up what parts they had left.
Hence no parts book has ever been available for these two models.
The first two 340's were five speed and were ridden in the 81 SSDT -these were factory bikes
that went back to the factory afterwards.
The deveolpment of the sherpa only carried on through Reg May at Comerfords
with Vesty, John Reynolds etc.
Comerfords Built/modified some std 340's into "Vesty replica"
models but were slighly modified from std with no major work, but i think they ony made 25.
These were not the radically modded bikes Vesty had, he rode the first one properly
in the SSDT '83,after lots of changes.
JR's bike followed after this. This is the bike with no swingarm spindle as the
swingarm mount is either side of the cases.
Before you ask - there was only ever one of these built and i know the owner-
an ex Comerfords employee.
So they were certainly not Developing these bikes in 85' no way!
By 1985 the bike was well out of date and essentially a 15 year old design!

They are a lot better than people may think!-
Good power, grips very well all the time , goods spares availability and very reliable
The only downside is the slight heavy weight but this has loads to do with the grip
level and the way the bike rides. If set up well a good bike.
Heres mine in current form-

Well said!!
If a company like Xispa can make a trials bike from the basic same parts as all the other brands of trials bike , and sell it for a cheaper price to the masses- surely
thay have got their heads screwed on the right way.
Every body moans about how costly new Evo's, 4RT ,Sherco's etc are BUT they still buy them!! and then add more bits!!!!!!!!
Who's the fool here then!!!????
I now a guy who's bought a rather exspensive 4RT and has bought programmable ignition , wheels and all sorts of stuff just so he can ride it!!
If all trials bikes were the same price as the Xispa nobody would say anything and buy one just the same, but they moan because its cheaper!!
In this day and age isn't that a consideration to most people?

I'm sorry, but the cotswold is not a proper twinshock and never will be it has TY MONO engine, Sherco Paoli forks
and probably rides better than any TY mono ever did!.
Back to the ORIGINAL thread question -
"Best twinshock ever?" -
Its a personal taste thing, whether you like the look of one of how it rides/performs
For me to ride its my SWM 320 , a very under estimated bike even now and back in the day.
As for best looking- Aprilia TX 300 , Gareli 323 twinshock , Italjet 250/350, SWM 320 '83
or 340 Bult.
-
"The Best Twinshock Ever?"
I think the topic means the best ORIGINAL twinshock made back in that era not a "re- made" cotswold or pre65 which probably both
have more mods that any 'works' bike also back in that era!!!!!
Most pre65 bikes now have more parts remade than anything , Gas Gas con rods , modded forks etc
certainly not an original bike by any means at all.
A lot of people that ride twinshocks aren't that keen on cotswolds etc if you know what i mean!
but rebuilding a twinshock or pre65 inthe same spec/style as original is ok in my eyes as its not a cheat bike!!
i think most would agree!!!
At least i ride my twinshock in the twinshock class- the correct class for the correct bike!
Enough said!!

Nearly 3 weeks now and still no email reply from Falcon!
So was on to John Bull yesterday and shocks coming today.
Top bloke and top service!!
He even asked me to give him feed back after i ride this weekend to see
if my shock will need tweaking.
Have thought about posting the Falcons back for repair but my mate sent some 3
years ago and has never had them back! Great !
No more Falcon's for me....
-
I think you should posting your questions in the pre65 thread....................

Castrol 747 is a mineral castor oil not semi or fully synthetic.
It does not mix well in cold temperatures and is one of the most expensive
2 stroke oils to get hold of.
If i were you i would use Castrol TTS (545 in old terms)
which is fully synthetic, i have used this for years.
-
You need to get a rim which has 36 spoke holes
all modern trials bikes from about 95/95/97 on have 32
-
If you can get hold of a reasonable one , and with a bit of time, money , effort and patience you can end up with
a very competirive twinshock machine, as not loads around would probably need sorting a bit.
Most parts are available, you just have to know where to look.
Not the lightest , but has plenty of power and grips like nothing else.
I wouldn't change my 320 for anything now , not even after changing from
a modern bike. my steed-

Timing setting is absolutely critical on all bultaco's with points as this can vary a hell of a lot
from model to model (i mean different models of sherpa)
and they need regular adjustment as the timing does change
I would suggest replacing the points with a genuine Femsa part
not a pattern EFFE part as they are crap.
If that fails then replace the LT coil
Does not matter where you mount the condensor.
You have only 4 things that can go wrong on the ignition system -
1. LT coil
2. HT coil
3. Points
4.Condensor
9 times out of ten people will always change the HT coil first as it is the easiest to change
and people don't realise there is a LT coil-
BUT 99% of the time it is the LT which goes wrong - usually this is replaced along
with new points and condensor, correct timing and everything works fine.
Just to check wires from LT coil -
Black wire- goes to points-HT coil
Green wire MUST go to earth - either on stator plate mount or up under tank on frame
Red wire is for Horn only- blank this off/tape up if not needed
Yellow wire is for lights only and runs from seperate LT coil - tape up/blank off wire
or take off lighting coil completely.
See how you go......

Have had my Falcons on for about 5-6 months , riding 2 or 3 times a month.
Atfer waiting 6-7 weeks for them to originally arrive i was getting p@@@@d off
but after they finally came and riding with them they were very good.
BUT last weekend the seals went , oil everywhere - so not impressed!!
after only having them for 5-6 months!
I emailed Falcon at the beggining of the week - still no reply!
I emailed John Bull for a set of Rockshocks and he rang me back the same day
to check what i needed and he would sort out some shocks whenever i am ready
Good service - not like Falcon!
Have to now wait until i can get the dosh to be able to afford another pair
of shocks that i shouldn't be having to pay for!!!

Back to the original point-
No 2010 montesa bike- there will be no more = no more Montesa
Montesa factory only has 40 engines left- no more
Tony Bou will ride 2009 bikes next year in a satelite team backed by Repsol money - not Honda
I have been told this by a reputable reliable source
-
Have seen on INMOTIONTRIALS.COM website that they sell
the correct genuine style 348 silencer
and also Montesa embossed fork gaiters, was thinking of getting some myself!
-
Has it been launched today??? (i mean as in new - not off a cliff or into a skip!- but thats another topic!!)
-
Just like to point out one simple fact-
ANY TRW Mont is not and never will be an HRC Factory bike built by HRC in Japan!
simple but true.
Got any more popcorn? or even a sofa with built in popcorn dispensor would be great!
-
I see your TY350 looks like it has a TALON front disc brake conversion also..
-
Only use '6205 C3' or higher 'C4' spec bearings in the crank
DO NOT use sealed 6205 bearings in the crank as the tolerance is wrong
You can use the sealed 6205 2RS (means 2 RUBBER SEALS!) bearing behind the front sprocket in the
case on the sleeve gear or if you have a single row bearing in the back of the clutch basket then
this is also the same , all bultacos varied in the the bearing in the clutch basket and you may
have a deeper double row bearing in the back of the clutch basket which is different and will not
fit.
Your 159 sherpa is a 1976 model and the haynes manual will not cover your bike as it only
covers models upto 1975.
Get hold of an original or copy of a 158/159 model parts book
Hope this helps

Some people seem to think that making trials no stop will make the sections easy , but if thats the case do
these poeple think that all trials from local level through to national and then world championship in the pre
hop era were also 'easy' years ago- i dont think they were.
What people seem to forget is you can still have a hard section/trial without big steps etc , chuck in a few cambers, roots
and some mud , and you will notice that the hip hob brigade wont know what going on.
The need for big stuff to ride up has only come about by the evolution of trials bikes that can go up anything,
people think they have to ride like Toni Bou all the time and that ALL sections should be like this, whats
wrong with a bit of variety?
Some kind of change is needed soon , or else the current world round circus of 9 riders will eventually be zero.
Obviously this is my own opinion , and some people will like slag me off......
-
Whats this got to do with foot brakes!!!!?
-
Just out of intrest, how much were they and which bike/model are they for?
Thanks
