What Do You Do When Theres Too Few Observers?
baldie replied to old trials fanatic's topic in UK Trials Talk
at my club in the east midlands we've most of what has been said on this thread ,some worked well & some failed miserably. It seems to me that you can never judge the observer turnout as on the last to trials we held, 1 prior to the world cup, we had 18 observers for 10 sections & the last trial we held, after the world cup we had only 6 observers for 10 sections. My own opinion is that there is some very reliable observers who come to events week in week out & some that not observe at all,& as riders we should thank them for giving their day up.The biggest problem that we have had is when we've run a round of the youth championship. The same excuse that is turned out over & over again is 'i want to watch my lad ride'. ok haven't a problem with that when all the sections are taken but at 1 youth event there was over 50 parents walkin round & only 6 manned sections. Maybe in situations like that you don't start the event until all sections are manned. -
We have the same problem at times tried all things some work some don't depending on the weather!!! One of worst tomes we had a problem finding observers was at a centre touth championship round. We had over 80 riders & about the same watching the trial but not one would pick up any of the three boards left on the sections. I had to give up my ride to observe. What bugged me the most was that I'd set out the day before, taken all the entries, answered all the questions that was asked about what rulees etc, collected all the sections in & when i got home did the results. All i got was a few phone calls from parents complaining about something or other. I felt like giving the job up there & then. I think sometimes riders should be made to observe or get involed with a club to see how effort goes into organising an event, especilly a national.

I Heard today while at the stocksbridge trial that the Jack Wood National & the St Davids british champ round is on the same day. From what I've been told it's the only date thats free for the St Davids that doesn't clash with a youth european round. Now while i think that the youth should be allowed to ride it is a adult championship. Personlly i believe that the trial that will suffer is the brit champ as i think that the unsponsored riders will probabaly ride one of the more traditional trials. Given the choice of 3 laps of 12 of the same type of sections ( big step followed by even bigger step) or 1 lap of 50 sections i would rather ride the Jack wood. I think that the entries in the traditional trials speak for themselves with most of them full way before the closing date, while the brit champs only attract a small entry.

Just thought i ask the trials public out there whether trials should be capped in a centre. I ask this because a club my centre has approx 26 events next year. This may not be a problem to those that just ride but to us organisers it is as we cannot find an alterative date if need be. My own thought on the matter is that they should and that a club should only be given permits for 12 events.

Having attended a CoC seminar on sat the topic of RA's was covered & while i agree that the CoC has alot on his plate at trials there is at least something that is being done by the ACU to cover the CoC & other officials in case there is a claim against officals/clubs. Lets not forget that you enter an event at knowing that you putting yourself at risk to some degree anyway. All i can say is that you use your common sense & experience when setting out any event from club to national status.
