Before you go too far just drain the carb - a very easy task and may well be the problem ( there's water in the bowl ). My bike did the same one day - fine until the front wheel was lifted ( either wheelie or climb ) and then completely flat. Caused some pain to crucial parts as it was fine to accelerate to a rock- but would go flat and drop the front wheel at just the wrong time .

Just more wonders of the WWW. It is awesome - Colin was playing in 10 inch water/mud at the weekend and the bike will just spin its way through - he can't stall the engine against the clutch at all in the new gear. Only down side is that I've had to make a tie wrap repair on the rear fender after he looped it climbing a slope. He's keen to do a full season of trials next year. I've seen a lot of people dog the JR/KDX for lack of power, general structural weakness, poor suspension and lack of tuning parts - and this is all probably true for racing, but for an all rounder, with two gears, it makes a very good proposition. Are you ready for a "slightly used" KDX yet ? I still have the training wheels.....

My Gasser - an 02 TXT never had the soft feel of other bikes. and even on the softest setting was slow to extend. Then one day I took to chasing and XR 250 around a MX track for a couple of hours. ( great fun but could use some more travel in the suspension ! ). Don't know if I just bedded things in or broke all the shock valving, but now it's as smooth as a baby's and is much easier to move around.

Hi, Had to pass on something cool I have just discovered. The JR50 comes from the store as a one speed centrifugal clutch with too high gearing to climb even a moderate slope. However - if you pull off the right side cover and grind some blanking material from the selector you can open up a low ratio gear ! This gear is really low and makes a superb trials gear. ( It's selected by lifting the lever - and the original gear by going down. ) This was great news for me as my boy has been struggling with his KDX lack of grunt - and I really didn't want to have to get a small wheel trials bike - I want his next one to have big wheels and a clutch. ( He's had the KDX since he was three - he's now five ). So if you're looking to buy the kid's first bike, but want to extend its life to some early trials, think about the JR/KDX.

Tommi, Best of luck with the new job. My boy will miss the trials show having seen it many times in and around Detroit. Thanks also for the time spent trying to teach us learners how to ride at TTC. Interested to know who's going to take over the demo trailer..... Andrew

The cooling fan switch has died in my Gas Gas TXT280 edition '02. Gas Gas USA want $73 for a new one ! The same part is #14.44 ( approx $25 ) in the UK. I don't mind paying a little premium for spares support in the USA but this is ridiculous. Anyway - to my question. Is the cooling switch common across brands ? ie can I get one from the Montesa/Sherco folks, or better still is the part a standard item from a more common application ( bike or car ) - if so what is it ? Please help if you have any info. If not I plan on quitting my job and starting up a fan switch import business. The Gas Gas part number is M0102003. It is held into a cast manifold by a metal clip - no threads.

Hi, My bike ('02TXT) does this all the time ever since a "buddy" flipped it and totalled the rear half of the bike. What it probably is is two stroke oil residue and its showing up because you have a crack in the metal stamped part of the exaust pipe. Nothing to worry about really if the bike runs OK - except the annoying marks on the garage floor. In your case the uphill ride affected the float height relative to the jets and it ran rich - you maybe noticed it smoked a lot more than usual on the climb. The extra fuel has oiled the plug to make it stop running. The residue is now showing up as you also filled the pipe with unburnt two stroke oil.. To confirm - the oil should be black in color if I'm right. If it's clean then I'm wrong.

I ride in the snow all the time - it's good practise with low traction and you can practise for ages without getting too hot. I use WD40 to stop it sticking so bad, but then push the peg up with my foot against its spring, and let it fly back down. This usually releases the ice/snow.
