  1. walk away.... ask yourself a couple of questions.. do you WANT a 1997 beta techno or is one just available.. is a road bike dealer the best place to buy a 15 year old off road competition motorcycle... if your in leeds your central for buying from private sellers and dealers go for a ride round saturday and see the selection of used bikes for sale at a grand, folks will let you ride etc get a feel for what you would LIKE keep the money in your pocket it can only grow.. as christmas and the new year comes folks will want need cash and better bikes will be for sale.. do not buy a bike tomorrow..
  2. you put your life at stake with that thing.. second hand.. lining doesnt fit any more.. would you use second hand brake pads in your car.. second hand seat belts... how much is a new helmet??
  3. simples.. i'm sure its been laid down elsewhere on the site but here goes 1. get bike MOt'd on frame number..(20- 30 quid) 2. get bike insured on frame number..( 80-300 quid) 3. get certificate proving age from sandifords or other montesa importer (30 quid?) 4. get down your local dvla centre ( on dvla site) join queue and wait.. fill in form whilst waiting..( times FREE) 5. they ll go through form and make an appointment for someone to view bike and ask for about 80 quid registration fees etc.. 6 some chap with no idea ( maybe a copper) will come and check numbers match those on form ( he ll also probably say he's never seen one before how fast does it go etc.) 7 reg number follows in post..
  4. can of worms... you accept one late entry this year next year no one enters so you cancel event only to be deluged by folk saying 'i was going to make a late entry' getting your entry in on time is as much of the event as the first section.. you would nt let folk miss out that part.. or would you if they rode no award..
  5. if you have a mates bike to test bits on get swapping.. no harm can come of it
  6. slacken off the lock ring with a Yorkshire screwdriver as above and tighten the adjuster till it 'sits' slightly with the weight of the bike and drops about 2 - 3 inches with you stood on the pegs. set the damping in the middle.. if the things still going up and down like a kid on a pogo then the shock needs a proper service by a specialist.. you dont want all bells and whistles just ask for it to be as good as new.
  7. new kickstart for 90 quid. properly sealed brakes for 50 quid and this for a cutting edge competition machine? i think thats chuffing good value.. add in an importer with knowledge and stuff on the shelf and delivered next day.. i think we re lucky..
  8. my rev 3 knocks like it ll expolde on normal UL pop super in and ts silent.. considering all the other expences associated with the bike saving 10p a litre is one i would nt be making. its 30p a tank full..
  9. strip the whole lot.. pump etc etc.. then you know what is right and wrong.. its simple enough the hardest part being getting the sumpguard back on! if its over heating leaking then somethings not moving or somethings blocked .. so whip off the rad and flush through whip of the side case and make sure the pump is working have all the pipes off and clean out.. have the head off and put a new gasket in.. change the gearbox oil.. stop the fan coming off permanently..and away you go..
  10. had a box of Gas Gas bits that i ebayed.. guy rang up and said have you a stepped bolt and included a drawing .. i said yes and asked a fiver.. he sent me 30 quid as it was unobtainium!!
  11. clearly the dealer is the first port of call. I think that in all likely hood I'd expect to pay for a repair if something was broken.. However the argument of merchantable quality is another issue. an item for competition might reasonably expected to require frequent and detailed maintainace and as such may be difficult for your trading standards to pursue..more so as you admit to having little mechanical experience.
  12. best i can say ( currently building a drayton courtesy of the fanatstic Jim Pickering) is come along to any yorkshire classic championship trial there are about a dozen bikes out now from home engineered specials to full on drayton bantams all you have to do is ask folk and you ll come away with contacts and a book full of tips..
  13. cub engines were built in a time when there was no such thing as semi synthetic so a trip to the local discount store ought to score some mineral oil 5/30 or 10/40 would be okay as its changed so regularly after so little running, your engine will not know the difference. what is important is to make sure that the engine is properly flushed to remove depoists/ crud etc imternally otherwise loverly clean oil is wasted. a nice magnetic sump plug helps as there will always be something to pull out.
  14. always buy a complete bike where possible the costs associated with converting a std bike might seem easy 1 piece at a time but add it all up and your on a hiding for nothing. essentials when buying a trials cub.. pvl ( electronic ignition) wide swinging arm alloy rims (21 and 18 inch) minimum std heavy duty cub forks cub hubs front and rear anything else is bling / nice or simply un necessary but look for domino levers, renthal bars, tank without a sealer, modified, narrow rear subframe, alloy oil tank, alloy mudguards, folding kickstart. understand what gear ratios/ size sprokets it has, branded trials shocks, decent tyres with a square edge if worn. loads of cub stuff about expect to pay min 2k for a running useable bike expect to spend another 2-500 making it your own.
  15. good luck bud... always take photos.. look a fool while you do it but whip your phone out everytime get faces regs no.s
  16. must be a cracking bantam if it can get up 4 foot steps.. speedy recovery.
  17. many manufacturers didnt even start with matching frame/ engine numbers.. after 50 years i suspect very few bikes have the same engine as they started out life with and if they do they will either be museum pieces sat neglected at the back of a shed or with a bike in current use, the internals will be so far removed from the starting point that the engine number is of intrest only to academics..
  18. i should imagine there are a couple of thosand riding amca exclusively. yorks classic have about 300 different riders over a year.. although many may also have acu cards.
  19. had mine on and off more times than muy undies never had a issue with aligning anything took it to bits put it back any old how. with the cover off and pulling and realeasing the ;lever do the plates etc move/ disengage. if not fiddle with tension of nut and cable until they do.. one of those things were they might not be a specific answer just a LOT of fiddling to get it set up right.
  20. 3 grand for a replacement value as youd spend some coin travelling etc to recreate such a bike.. whether than the insurance would pay up is an entirely different matter.
  21. totalshell

    Thanks

congratulations a nice job enjoy.. i would nt chance those pink riding boots by the door though
  22. how much of a differece did you expect? the euro has moved from 1.14 to 1.24 over the last year thats about 8.5% factor in increased fuel pricing esp. in southern europe, inflation especially in spain and frankly at the end of it 5 -6 grand for a brand new state of the art thing to throw at rocks is still damned good value. you do know that its all thatchers fault.
  23. At last something from the govt that i can enjoy, despitenot actually agreeing with. No more MOT'S! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18146326
