Hi All,
Having recently acquired a 2006 Beta Rev3, I feel i have already fallen into a pit fall
I have gone to give the bike a good service and started to change the coolant and I have found what i can only describe as mayonaise, which i know is oil and water mixing
The previous owner thinks that there was radwell in the system, however that just doesnt make sense??
However I thought i'd throw a few pictures up on there, see if you agree?
- what the fix is going to be
- whats the damage possibility done?
So first up the radiator:
When i took the water pump off
After i cleaned the water pump housing out
You can see the seal is at an angle and i wonder if its the issue?
Then a look at the gearbox oil, which is Putoline oil, (thats what was on the shelf, so i believed him)
..its hard to get the light right, with an LED Torch, but i tried to get the colour
Ideas ?? ..

Alot of the modern bikes are all great, but they all have their issues, like any manufacturer. I'd buy one that you like the look of, OR is the right price.
But going to a local event and just having a walk about is a good idea
-
bought it
Prices have definately gone up or not dropped in the last three years, but anyway, got myself a 2006 Rev3
-
Thank you for all the input.
The above bike was a mint and had been looked after really well, I dont know what was wrong with me though, as i didnt buy it.
I cant explain it, but it just didnt feel right. Odd i know and i regretted it straight away.
BUT !
Im off to pick up a 2006 Rev3 270 tonight
I know the owner and he has looked after the bike right, setting the float etc, so hopefully it will be spot on

Think you did ham, basically you haven't lost any money, or maybe
-
In 2009 05 bikes were up for around

poor bloke,
videos always make the 'mountains' look small

Hi Guys,
I've been out of trials for about three years and am looking to buy a trials bike, but the market is incredibly busy and competitive !
im contacting sellers who have had tons of interest on their bikes and usually they are selling within days.
Is now the wrong time of the year to buy? Im guessing that because local clubs are starting their comps soon, everyone is looking to sort a new bike?
Would it be better to wait a few months before getting a bike, as they would be a little cheaper and less buyers hunting the bikes down???
I sold my bike in Feb 2009, and prices seem to have shot up since, Wish i'd held onto it now, (but it was the right decision at that time)
Cheers
Matt

Thats very informative

Hi guys
I've done some searching on here and found some excellent threads about what to check over when buying a beta.
And while im very tempted not to put a thread (a sign that the beta has a good following and forum !) I still had the urge to put a thread up and ask just a couple of questions.
This is the bike i am going to look at.
2005 Rev3 250 cc - owned from new for the last 7 years (which to me is a good sign)
- I know that they are prome to stators, and this one has had one replaced.
- i know to check for headstock and swinging arm bearings
- I've read that the shocker is rose jointed and i need to check the joint at the top and bottom of the shock due to them being
-
the bike looks very tasty, and with a forged frame and swing arm im not surprised its a costly.
Will be interested to see one
-
Makes sense, thanks for the info and photos
-
totally looks worth it ! i bet it bloody hurts if you fall over,
was the first tyre mullured due to the cold temps?
-
I've had a chat with the very helpful Chris at Splat Shop,
He recons that he cant tell me the exact model year of my bike, but says that it was manufactured in 2000.
To find out whether its a 2000 or a 2001 he suggested looking at these pictures as the exhaust changed between 2000 and 2001
2000
2001
Mine has the 2001 exhaust so im going to believe mine is an 2001 which was manufactured in 2000.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the input!
I'll get some photos up but the bike isnt complete, and the plastics may not be the right ones cos it says 2.5 sherco on the rear mudguard,
Your info is very helpful zippy, but its that v and y which are confusing
-
Hi Guys,
I know there will have been many threads about this in the past, including this one, which details a 2004 sherco:
http://www.trialscentral.com/forums/topic/13632-sherco-frame-numbers/
But i cant find one which answers my question
From that thread I learnt that the 8th digit denotes the year, so TR4 would be a 2004 etc. HOWEVER the bike i've just bought does not have this, it has a TRY so im guessing its a 1999??? it also make me question the engine size as well,
can somone confirm the age for me, and potentially point me towards the engine size? the casing sticker says 2.9 but i dont trust it.
My frame number is
VNBS329TRYA004058
Anyone got some info or links??
Cheers

sounds like an air leak if the revs are staying high or keep going up
-
Hi Copemech,
Thanks for that. The guy told me that his done a 'conrod kit' which included: big, little ends and piston rings. Along with the mains and side seals. The guy recons that its still alittle noisey but put that down to the normal piston slap that is heard. But thought i'd ask here to check.
I'll check the serial number, i think its 8th digit TR4/5 will tell.
Im off to look at it tonight so fingers crossed its a workable project
-
the above two posts are better than mine haha, dont jump the gun with my advise just yet
-
im not up on my beta's so not sure if its a specific thing or not.
But if it was a car, i'd be thinkings its a stuck caliper.
To rectify it i'd be pumping the lever with the brake pads out to see if the pistons themselves are moving. If they are not then it may be a cause of trying to dislodge them, or a strip down and rebuild.
-
Thought i'd bump an old thread than start a new one.
Im looking at a 2005 290 sherco 'project' tomorrow night.
apparently the bloke has changed the main bearings, side seals, and used a conrod kit, bit and small bearings plus rings.
he recon's it runs well now, but says its still alittle noisey but thinks all sherco's are???? is that right?
I also wondered if there is a thread for age identification from the frame? as i cant seem to find one??
I know to check for bearing and swinging arm play etc when i view the bike. but is there anything sherco related that i isn't covered above???
Cheers for the advise in advance

Hi Harrison,
I also have a similar question and wondered whether i could tag my question on with yours ?
My brother is 14 going 15 and im looking to get him his first bike (i've been out of trials for 3 years but looking to get back in)
Would he be able to cope with a 250, or is a 125 really the best bet?
What sort of age range is a 125 good for?
Competition wise, it would only be on a local level
Sorry to hijack your thread harrison but hope thats ok

yeah something wasnt quite right about it, but in fairness it seemed ok, apart from it not starting.
Think im going to keep an open mind when i look at bikes now, think im going to bob up to a friends tonight to play on his 05 Rev3. Who knows maybe i'll do a career change and become an electrican as well
-
Thanks for the posts and picture about the exhaust guys
I had a look at the bike on sunday morning.
The bike looked pretty good to be honest, not as toad like as i thought it might. The wheel bearings and headstock bearings had been done. As had the air filter.
The back tyre was ready for changing but the owner was a motorcross rider mainly, so i could understand him maybe not understanding that the tyre was dead for trails (it has been turned as well)
Looking at the frame numbers showed that it was a 1997 ! not a 2001, and while he didnt put the age in the advert, he did tell me via a message that it was a 2001.
But i still looked at the bike,
After chatting with the bloke he told me that it had recently had new piston rings done by a mate and the bike hadn't been run in yet or since. When we asked him where he bought the bike he said "we went a long way for it" but didnt actually say where. He also told me he'd only ever rode it once and its been stood a year. I asked why he'd bought it then and he said he'd had a sherco that he rode instead...
Leaving that info to one side i attempted to start the bike. But turned out it didnt want to start.
i tried it:
- With the choke on
- Choke off
- taking the plug out and burning the oil/fuel off the plug (as i presumed it would be flooded)
- I also emptied the carb to remove any oil sat in the bottom.
- There was a spark too
I figured it may need a little more fuel in the tank or bumping it could help.
But by this point i decided i didnt want the bike. I've had bikes in the past that have been a bugger to start and i didnt want to have those problems again. Plus if the piston has been replaced without the bore being replated i wondered if it was going to suffer with poor compression anyway?
So, im going to keep looking see if i can scrape abit more
