  1. Oh yeah, forgot you got the newer tank. Those older plastic, with a loose plastic cover one have it more often.

What are you mixing and where you really reving it out?

I checked out the fuel vent and its not blocked, im mixing 80:1 i think! or very close on it, and ipone 2t, didnt get a chance to check plug yet!

And  was i 3rd gear 3/4's full throttle, and just died away! tryd kicking it stright away but it backfired! but then started fine after 2mins,

maybe it as just blocked, as nearly every other trials bike iv ridding hard up a very steep hill for more then 10mns starts spluttering and exhaust end can goes on fire!

on another note, is it good to pre mix your trials bike fuel and leave it in 20l durm and just use it when you need it? or does the 2t loose its kick?

Cheers once again for top info!

    TX 270 and TXT 270

  2. Hi Guys,

Tried out this gas gas tx 270 I got the last day, so I brought it to the hill for its frist spin after getting it a few days ago, and under heavy load (driving on steep part of hill for 10mins in 3rd gear) it cuts out, and if i try to start it, it backfires! so i leave it for 2mins and it starts fine take off and after driving up the steep part for another 10mins it cuts out again! leave it to cool or few mins and it fine! any ideas? i have only done a few basic things since i got the bike, oil change, carb strip, air filter check and cleaned out the tank and put my own fuel mix in. bike seems to be running fine otherwise!

one thing I have spotted is the cooling fan is on from the moment it started, might try and sort that later.

thanks again for your help guys

  3. Thanks guys for all your valuable information it's much appreciated! Ok first of all the area where I live is remote, littered with bad ass hills and cliffs everywhere even has the (highest sea cliffs in europe to be precise!) my nearest trials club were I can go to ride sections is 5hr drive away, so up super early drive 5hrs ride sections drive 5hrs home means knackered wrecked! so better option is to ride trials bikes here with a few mates and explore all the area has to offer! and most of the trial tracks we go on has everything you would find in observed section trials, so thats why im wondering about extra fuel and other supplys as just in case something happend way up a hill my score card would be no good to me! :hyper:  but extra fuel or a fa kit would! :icon_salut: normal days trial is about 6hrs and a distance of 24miles! good times! yeah cant wait now for the week end!

  4. yeah I have ordered a hebo tank for the front of the bike where the number plate goes, so because its a 1l capacity it means i can just bring one primus 1l fuel bottle in my rucksack which should give me more room for other stuff, tool kit, first aid, gps, food and rain jacket, seems like a lot of stuff to be carrying?

I tryed putting the fuel bottles on the bike above tank but when going up steep hill climbs if you bend your knees the catch the bottles!

by the way I have a 2002 280 txt pro! broke my heart and my pocket! I had a 2001 txt tho never a days bother! heavy bike but reliable, the older bikes are good all round bikes, but the txt pro models are way lighter and way eazer to do stuff on.

  6. Ok sorry for late reply on update, took a spill off my gasser pro last week that put me out of action, ok so finiely got to test out the jtx 270 o the hill yesterday, and yep problem solved!

on another note tho, something i havent come accross before!!! as the bike was running great when i got up the hill halfway (hight of hill 671meters) the bike felt like there was a hard spot in the chain! a sort of hold back feeling, abrupt tug! so got to the top and on the way down i was in frist gear and having a 9t/40t setup makes it nice for steep down hills, but bike kept cutting out and wouldnt start only on full choke! I had my suspicions tho! as my mate was on his 97 315r and complaining of the same problems! we came to conclusion it was altitude sickness! of the bikes that is!, both bikes are 1997 so are similar, once we got back down again bikes were fine! funny thing is we have been up there before on newer bikes but hasent effected them! mabe the older bikes dont like altitude! also something to point out, te weather was damp foggy kind of stuff! just thought id mention it!

  7. Broken choke jet could very well be the problem, when the o-ring on it gets damaged it affects the jetting due to fuel bypassing it

Out of interest how different was the jetting numbers in the 2 carbs?

There a slight difference between jet size, I will check tomorrow on the old carb for sizes

  8. Ok very early days yet! but might have solved it? Ok we took out the carb again to check the jetting size! and after another inpection of carb we found a broken component! one of the jetts! the one that goes all the way into the bowl ( jet choke i think ) I have post a picture of it below, so we just used another carb that I got and put everything back together and tested it out! 20min spin and its still going! switched the bike of and frist kick it starts again! I will probably bring it to the hill at the week end for a real test, but does this broken jet make sence to you guys as to the plug blown problem?

    Cheers guys

  9. Ok went out to the bike shed today with the big happy head on me thinking I was going to sort the problem! yeah right! anyway i strpped carb, cleaned it! descoverd that the clip on the needle was at the top setting, I moved it down to one up from the bottom setting, I took off the fly wheel cover and checked for play in it, it was solid, so i put everything back and put another plug in it! it started fine! idled fine, ran fine, then took for a quick spin and after 2mins .......plug gone again! and thats quick! so later after that when my mate called around he put an idea into my head! This bike was built from a box! lots of gas gas parts, 3 bikes in total frist one a 96 jtx 250 (i think) engine gone, and 97 jtx 200 and a 97/98 jtx 270, so i had 3 carbs to choose from! could it be that i picked the 200cc carb! its the same as the 270 but probably jetted different? but if that was the case why did it run sweet for about 10or 11 hours prior to this?

could this be the problem? I will check the jetting tomorrow, just thought I would up date you all frist!

Thanks again Guys your input is much appreciated!!!

  10. Really, this is how bikes get flooded with fuel. I used to see the same guys show up at events with non-running bikes, just because they left the fuel on. In transport the floats bounce letting fuel in even with everything working good.

So is it best to turn off after every ride/spin or only when being tansported?

    Cheers lineaway

  11. Are you turning the petcock to off when parked Have you ever thought to pull off the flywheel cover and give the crank a good tug? Bad main bearings play hell with ignition timing.

I never turn of the petcock! can you explain the reason one would do that?  I know i hydrolocked me txt pro one time by fuel getting past the carb into the head caused by sticking carb floats or something! maybe thats a good reason to switch it off!

  12. When you say "....and dies away, check plug and no spark" do you mean that with a new plug there is no spark, or that there is no spark with the plug that came out?

no spark from original pug! when I put new plug in, it works fine! last plug I blow (the other evening) was a number 5 which is a hot plug! well maybe better if it was a number 7 or 8?

  13. Hi Guys,

I am not long after buying a few project bikes/parts cheep! and after a few hours in my bike shed I was able to build a 97 or 98 (forget again) gas gas JTX 270 from one pile of parts, and after it was built I clocked up about 12hrs of riding time on it! in this time it was very well behaved, started first time everytime!  and a lovely bike to ride! but now after a few weeks parked up, when I start it, it wont start and keeps blowing spark plugs! I have checked the color of the plug a few days ago and it was carbon fouled, and when I place a new/other plug in it, it runs ok (well little rough at full throttle) but then next day same thing, kick it over it starts for a few seconds and dies away, check plug and no spark!...........

think i will check needle settings next? but I thought id ask you experts your opinion first???

    Cheers Guys
