I have just remembered the previous owner saying that the carb was upgraded, so this might be the cause for the confusion.
I took a picture of said sight glass in the hope it might ring a few bells -
Any more ideas?
Chris.
-
....on the side of my 290, can't remember if it's on the carb or just next to it, there is a sight glass with markings.....can someone shed some light as to what that sight glass contains and what level it should be?
I am ready with a face palm if it's painfully obvious.
Chris.

Evening all.
In an attempt to make my Sherco 100% road legal I have fitted a speedo to keep Mr and Mrs Plod happy.
It's just one of those mountain bike ones from that ever popular auction site -
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIGITAL-CYCLE-MOUNTAIN-RACER-BIKE-DIGITAL-WIRELESS-SPEEDO-COMPUTER-SPEEDOMETER-/290960376715?pt=UK_SportGoods_CyclAcces_RL&hash=item43be97038b#ht_2800wt_1141
Has anyone else fitted one of these?
It does work, after a little modification to the little magnet...motorbike spokes are a little bigger than mountain bike ones...but it does read a little erractic.
There is a chart to allow you to insert a code based on the wheel size. This chart doesn't go up to motorbike sizes so I was wondering if that could be the issue, and what can be done to make it work better?
Basically can anyone who has fitted one of these tell me how and where they fitted it, and what wheel size to go by?
I'm happy for it to be on there and continue to read as it is. I mean if I get stopped at least I can say "tadah...here is my speedo Mr Officer", but it would be nice if it would read more accurate.
Thanks in advance,
Chris.

Hello all.
Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere else in this forum, but on average how long can you be out on a tank of fuel? And how long can you ride on the 'reserve'?
I've got a 290 (2007) and i'm always a bit nervous about being out too long incase I run out of fuel.
I keep having a peek at the level but really that is of no use to me.
I know it all depends on how you ride, and yes, I could take out extra fuel with me, but I guess that's what the reserve on the tank is for.
Not after anything exact, I would just like to get an idea.
Many thanks,
Chris.

Very true.
I have just read that info on the direct.gov website.
As it happens after calulating the required measurements (height, width, distance from the plates edge, distance between the characters) it turns out the smallest plate that can be used legally is 228mm x 163mm which works out at 8.97' x 6.41'.......pretty close to 9'x7'.
So I think that puts an end to that.
Thanks for the info everyone, and if this little question pops up again we have the answer in black and white....or should that be black and yellow.
Chris.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I think that I had better just get a legal plate and make some kind of quick release thing to remove it easily.
I will only be riding on the road to get to the woods, and it's only a couple of minutes away...if that.
I was tempted to go for a 5x4 plate just so it didn't look as stupid as a 9x7 is going to, but seeing as though I am trying to make things as legit as possible it would be silly to go for a non legal plate.
Riding a trial bike on the road you are basically waving your arms in the air to the police asking to be pulled over, so it makes sense for the bike to be air tight in terms of the law.
Thanks again my fellow enthusiasts.
Chris.

Hello all, Can you all please share how big your number plate is? How is it attached (stuck to mudguard, on a bracket)? Have you had any issues if it's a non legal size? I know how big they should be but its just not that practical. Ideally I just want a sticky one to stick to the rear mudguard but before I made a purchase I thought I would see what you are all using to get an idea. Thanks fellow riders. Chris.

Ta very much for that....oh and the misses says thanks also, hahaha.
-
Well the old girl has been a bit neglected for a while so it's time to give her a bit of attention.
I'm gearing up to get the Sherco road worthy. Don't worry, no "what do I need for an MOT?" questions coming up.
All I am trying to find out is with the new road fund licence rules, do you still need to display a tax disc on a motorbike?
I understand why there is no need for a car due to numberplate recognition via the fancy cameras, just wondered if the same applies to motorbikes?
Ta very much,
Chris.
-
Thanks very much for that......I will have a look.
I'm a bit hesitant when it comes to getting my hands dirty. I feel that I want to do these little maintenance things, it's just a confidence thing so 'how to' guides or videos really help me.
Chris.

Hello all.
Haven't been out on the old 290 for a while so fancy changing some fluids.
Can someone send me in the right direction for a 'How To' with regards changing the gearbox oil and coolant?
If no such thing exists any chance of a few tips?
Many thanks in advance.
Chris.

Ooooo you've got to love a cheap fix. Nice one fella.
So using 'Man Logic', technically, since no rebuild was required, you are a fair few hundred quid up......what you gonna buy?
-
Lots of good advice there chaps, thanks very much.
The spark plug ideas are definately worth a try.
It's frustrating how obvious these little issues are to most, but somewhat less obvious to a newbie. All part of the learning curve I suppose.
Thanks again fellow trial riders......you really are a helpful lot.
Chris.
-
Oooooo ta very much chaps....that kind of makes sense to my non-mechanical brain.
I even started to doubt the fuel tap position, haha, glad to know I was on the right lines.
I'll give that wide open throttle trick a go next time, 'cause i'm pretty sure another off is on the cards....not sure about being upside down though lesteregg2005, but I'll have a go.
Thanks again.

........trials community, since today was the first time on the bike in 3 weeks!
It was all going so well...building up confidence, riding over really really short tree stumps.
I thought it would be wise to get a feel for how the bike reacts when going over stuff on the sump guard. Also I was having a go at blipping the throttle over things to 'pop' off rather than 'drop' off.
One thing though that really frustrated me was after getting up close and personal with mother nature, and attempting to kick the bike, it just would not start.
I seem to have trouble starting the bike anyway, I just get too excited, but is it possible for a bike to flood with fuel when on it's side? It took me ages (30min) to get it going.
I am assuming that fuel only goes in when the bike is running so I'm confused as to why it took so long to start.
Any ideas?
Oh, it's a Sherco 290.....didn't want to post in the 'Sherco' section as it's a general bike query, so no abuse please...oh go on then, just a little, but keep it clean.
Chris.

Just checked out the text on the website (internet access at work blocks YouTube unfortunatley) and there is a lot of great info to read through, so thanks for sharing.
I'm looking forward to watching the videos later, and I will most definately be subscribing.
-
Hahaha, well plenty to chuckle at in this thread.
Thanks for the replies so far chaps....I might have a go at the "Aaaaaaarggh!" one.
-
Afternoon all.
I have searched for some relevant info on the site but to no avail...so can someone please describe the various trials technique lingo that I happen across reasonably often?
Jap Zap? Splat? um....etc?
Ta very much.
Chris.
-
....bits ordered from Splatshop so we are good to go.
-
Haha thanks for checking that fella.
Thanks for the reply, and for the link, I've ordered the eBay clutch tool thingy so will give that a go.
-
Ah I see that the model range for those items does indeed cover an '07, so for £18 it may be worth a punt.
Thanks Lewis.
-
.........well it's back to the dealer idea.
Had a email confirming that the tool listed on eBay doesn't fit my '07 model. It was worth a shot though. Thanks anyway Lewis.
If my local dealer can do the job for how much it would cost me in parts, then it's a no brainer.
One question though, with the kickstart spring needing to be replaced, is there a liklihood of damage being caused if the bike is used?
Chris.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I've watched a few of Ryans videos on youtube, very informative....and free.
Also, two videos I can't stop watching are the urban trial videos by Fred Crosset.
They might not be everyones cup of tea but I think it gives trial riding a different perspective. I'm still happy pottering around the woods where nobody can see me, but to see someone riding urban makes a refreshing change....if slightly naughty.
-
Cheers Lewis, you're my new best friend.
The tool on Splatshop was £60ish i think....the eBay one seems much more do-able.
With the parts now being £50-£60 I think I might have a go after all.
-
Hmmmm it seemed like a straight forward job until now.....might get a quote for a dealer to do it. At least I know it'll be done properly.
Not only that, I priced up all the kit, including the recommended clutch tool thingy, and it was about £106....ouch!
