Results AMA California Speedway Climate: Sunny Temperature: 33 degrees Duhamel Third in the Championship American Honda's Miguel Duhamel maintained his third place in the AMA Superbike Championship despite a frustrating weekend at California Speedway in Fontana, California. Duhamel and teammate Jake Zemke swapped finishing positions from Saturday to Sunday. Duhamel was fifth on Saturday and sixth on Sunday, Zemke was just the opposite. Both made improvements from one day to the next, but each had their own difficulties. Heat played into Duhamel's fifth place on Saturday. The surface of the track east of Los Angeles heated up considerably, with temperatures rising to 50 degrees. That somewhat negated much of the work the team had done throughout practice and qualifying. On Sunday he was balked by another rider at the start, then repeatedly struck bad luck with lapped riders in his pursuit of fourth place. Zemke raced Duhamel and Tommy Hayden, the brother of Repsol Honda's world champion Nicky Hayden, on Sunday, getting the better of him and carding his better finish. The trio battled hard throughout, Hayden getting the better of the two Honda riders at the end, but only by tenths of a second. After five of 18 races, Duhamel has 141 points to 173 for Suzuki's Ben Spies, and 164 for his teammate Mat Mladin. Spies won Saturday's race from Mladin, with Mladin turning the cards on Spies on Sunday. Miguel Duhamel, 5th Place, 6th Place Saturday The bike was wonderful during qualifying, the last qualifier. It should have been on the front row and I was really disappointed with that. But I was so confident in the race. The track went from 30C to 50C. The bike was totally different, totally different. I tried as hard as I could. It was pretty much a handful. The bike was just not giving me the same feedback. It was like riding a different bike. So I tried to hang in there as long as I could. It wasn't too bad. Unfortunately we got fifth. Eric (Bostrom) came by, tried to stick with Eric. And then Tommy (Hayden) came by, tried to stick with him and I did. Tried to reel him in at the end, but he got a second wind. Couldn't catch him. Hopefully this won't be a turning point for the championship later on in the season. Sunday Everybody else rode good. Tommy (Hayden) and Jake (Zemke) were right there. With about five, six laps to go I really put a big effort in; I think got back into the 24's and got right on them. And I said, OK, I just got to lead that last lap. And I was thinking maybe a two for one, maybe Jake's going to try something and I'm going to try to get these both guys. Jake couldn't get quite back up to Tommy, so then I got on Jake and I was going to try to make a move and try to get Tommy and lapped riders came in. The bike is good. it's extremely frustrating, because I felt I could have done a little bit better, not win, but get a lot closer to the top five or the top four. And the team is good, the bike is good, and it'd be a shame to say at the end of the year that we get pretty close but we come up short because I couldn't get by a lapped rider. Jake Zemke, 6th Place, 5th Place Saturday At the beginning there we were able to make a couple of passes, get up to fourth. As the race wore on, obviously Eric (Bostrom) got quite strong in the race and was able to run consistent laps and that's what we weren't able to do and our times dropped off a little bit there. But hopefully we made some improvements on that this morning. We're going to go try a couple different things. It wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible. At least we didn't run into the same problems we had at Barber. It was a little bit of a step forward. Sunday We accomplished one goal; we were consistent over the course of the race, whereas yesterday we fell off pretty bad timewise. We were just a little bit greasy on the side of the tire when we're in the middle of the corner. I was trying to get a run at Tommy (Hayden) coming to the white flag out of the last corner there and I just lost both ends. Then I got stuck. There's a seam there and if you get your wheels in the seam you're all done. And I got into the seam and it pushed again. I still kind of caught back up to him, but I never had an opportunity to make a pass anywhere. It was definitely a lot better than yesterday. The boys made the bike a lot better overnight. They got the bike to turn a little bit better. Like I said, we were consistent over the course of the race more so than yesterday for sure. It was a lot better, but still not the results we're looking for. Team manager Ron Heben We continue to make a lot of progress. Obviously the competition is making progress itself. Today both Miguel (Duhamel) and Jake (Zemke) made some improvements on their settings from yesterday's race. And we really felt that we could put both of those guys, or at least one of them, on the box today. Obviously, look at the competition; it's getting tougher and tougher. We're going to take what we learned from this race, go to our next test, and then go to Infineon (Raceway) with the intention of going up there and doing good. Race One: 1. Ben Spies (Suzuki) 2. World Supersport and Superbike Championships 2007 Round 5, Assen

Just as a wee note - don't automatically assume anyone who is out there without a competitors number plate is riding illegally and launch into them! Trials Central will have two people out on the course to provide coverage who are not competitors and at least one of them may not even be on a Trials bike. They are officially sanctioned by the organisers and will carry official press plates and identification. CJB will most likely have their guys out and about too and not necessarily on Trials bikes. I don't know for certain they'll be there, but would assume so. If so, they'll all have signed on and have proper plates on their bikes and identification indicating they're Press. I'm all for riders challenging illegal riders, but check they aren't authorised first. It might save some embarrassment

This is, unfortunately, true hence my hope that photographing them and publicly shaming them will have at least some effect. Might even try and interview a few of them this year to find out their reasoning. Anybody got any "big" mates going who could act as bodyguard?!

Apart from the fact there are some arrogant a******es who will ignore anything said to them, getting volunteers for this kind of job is always going to be difficult. People travel to see the Trial, not to stand at a gate and police the course - even volunteer observers get to see at least SOME of the Trial. Would you, as Overthehill said, volunteer to travel to Kinlochleven and spend your entire time there policing a gateway? Regardlesss of that, it shouldn't be necessary if people genuinely had the interests of the event at heart. The signage is clear, plentiful and presented on the approaches... To miss it you'd have to be blind. And if what my granny told me is true, I can understand why these people are blind

This article was brought to my attention. I don't buy the publication, but someone was so angered by the attitude displayed they scanned it and forwarded me a copy. It is unfortunate the entire world of Trials cannot rally together over this as we really need to show a united front, but I am not going to rise to the obvious bait. Suffice to say we have, thanks to our TC Forum members, professional legal people working and advising on this. We have also had feedback and advice from planners within other local authorities, again, thanks to TC readers. Was the petition premature? Absolutely not. You have to strike while the iron is hot and the topic is in everybody's minds. It will be used, if necessary, to further the cause when the time is right and not before. It is just a small part of what's going on. And, doing my best Forrest Gump, that is all I have to say about that. For now.

Trials Central would never condone or encourage any action like that above.

EXACTLY! Good point well made. Addingham today, your favourite venue tomorrow. Even if you've never been to Addingham, please sign it. You are not just petitioning to save this one venue, but are standing up for Trials as a whole and all the practice grounds all over the UK. If the Trials community can stand up and come forward en masse then maybe others will think twice before randomly shutting down established practice areas and thus encouraging illegal practice.

I saw HL was posting and held off until she'd made her reply as I thought "Uh oh!" As some know, I work for Symantec (them what make that Norton Anti-Virus stuff). I don't work for them through choice, but because they bought the company I worked for. I don't really deal with the security side of things but have always steered clear of their AV products because, although they work, they have been massive resource hogs on PCs - even after I was officially an employee and could get it for free I still wouldn't use it. Norton 360 which is the new release has been re-written from the ground up and has had fantastic reviews. It is, apparently, far less of a resource hog and just runs away in the background. Does a lot more than just AV too. Personally I use AVG Free as HL said. As long as you're not stupid enough to open attachments from unknown sources it does the job fine. Doesn't offer firewall protection, phishing protection, anti-spam or any of the fancy stuff that Norton 360 or equivalents do, but for basic anti-virus it's good for the job.

I've had contact from Guy Smeeth, the lone Canadian entry in this year's SSDT who has a little bit of a logistics problem. His flight gets into Glasgow airport around 1pm on Sat 6th May. The next bus won't get him into Fort William until it's too late to do any work on his new, untested bike. I've checked train times and that's the same. Is there anybody passing through Glasgow around 1:30pm on the Saturday heading for the SSDT who could help him out with a lift? If so, please PM me or email me trialscentral AT trialscentral.com

Apart from wanting to bump this topic back up to the top of the list, I want to confirm that the "Dougie Lampkin" signature added to the petition today is 100% the man himself. It is not a fake. I can also confirm that Alexz Wigg on the petition is not a fake, nor is Shaun Morris. I hope to add the names of James Dabill and Graham Jarvis as genuine names shortly. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to try and save this key venue, but please - if you've not signed the petition then PLEASE do so - even if you don't think it affects you.

Nothing received. However, the major problem with Japan, apart from the attitude of the people is the location. You're a good two hour drive from Tokyo airport and unless you have an international drivers licence, you can't hire a car so you have to organise transport in advance and it's not cheap - though if there's a few of you that can share cost it works out better. The Honda complex is surrounded by nothing except miles and miles of paddy fields. Once you're there, you're stuck there. The hotel is the most sterile I've ever been in. Rooms are nice, food is okay, attitude of the staff sucks. We were up 3am to fly from Manchester to Paris then a 12 hour flight to Tokyo followed by 2 plus hours on a bus to the hotel. We arrived around 11am local time on God knows what day - we'd lost track by then. They wouldn't let us into our rooms till check-in time (1pm I think) - even though they were empty and ready. They wouldn't even allow us a room to dump our gear and take a shower (and folk think what we do is glamorous and fun...) The officials at the Trial are a nightmare. Jake, Doug, Mart - they all warned me. I thought they were exaggerating and just winding me up, but they were right It's not a place I ever want to go back to. However, if you do go then make the time to visit the Honda museum. That is well worth a visit. My claim to fame, gained on this trip, is that Martin Lampkin called me the "Most annoying **** he'd ever had the misfortune to travel with" after I got excited about getting the hell out of the place and whistled "Leaving On A Jet Plane" for the entire two hour journey back to the airport
