Hey, Thanks for the help.
I do bow to copemech ... He always has a credible opinion. I think you could be right about the grit in the slide.
We studied all the links on the sticky when we bought the bike.
But I thought I'd ask before we start delving - problems like this usually end up being common problems.
Shercoholic, this made me smile, that's exactly what I did wrong when I first took the carb off. Point taken and thanks.
Thanks again.

Hi,
My lad, RockDan, was out practising on his '04 125 last night.
Going over a log he blipped the throttle and it stuck on, virtually full.
Needless to say he had a big crash ..... all character building stuff .....
(He'll kill me for putting that)
Anyway, looking at the twist grip there's now about an inch of play in the cable outer.
So I'm guessing there's a problem in the carb which we'll have a look at over the weekend.
Before we start, anyone got any suggestions on what we should be looking for or problems we might find?
Any tips on getting the carb off/on (the last time we took it off it was a real pig to get back on)?
We'd really appreciate any advice.

Yeah, fair description Telecat
Me and the lad ride there maybe once a fortnight.
We're really not that good so there's still huge challenges for us there.
Here's a recent post from BUMPY themselves ......

BUMPY is

Might be useful .......
I built my trailer and made the hitch bar removable so the trailer is shorter.
Might be possible to modify your trailer similar.
Second, I made 2 dollies (sort of U shaped attatchments with wheels) that just push onto the side or end of the trailer so that the trailer can be lifted upright onto the dollies.
It's easy to wheel it around and even leave it (chain it!!!) upright against a fence/wall.
-
Ned1, Yeah give me a shout
BDMC, thanks we might try that
-
Sorry Bumpy, I'm putting your prices up for you
Back on topic Ned1,
I'm not too sure about the other side of the pennines
but over here there's obviously other places around that are 'less legal' but these are getting stamped on/shut down (Flappits in Bradford, Addingham etc.)
Give Bumpy a try if it's not a major journey for you.
We try to get there every alternate Sunday (ish).
Let me know if you're going, we might be able to meet up

Check out Bumpy (south Leeds) .... www.bumpy.org.uk
As far as I remember it's

The "millilitre" is one thousandth of a litre
A litre is a cube 10cm x 10cm x 10cm (1000 cubic centimeters)
So,
one millilitre = 1cc
Sorry
I know what I am

Hi,
just thought you might be interested to hear how this went, it might inspire more ideas to bring Trials, even in a small way, out in the open.
The day went really well with everyone having a good time and no real incidents. We were starting to get concerned about the weather but it turned out perfect which had a major influence on the success of the event.
The George Hotel has a fairly large car park between it and the main road which we cordoned off for the day and meant that the action was visible to passers by.
There was a selection of about 5 bikes being almost continuously ridden around the car park by about 15 riders. The obstacles they had built proved a real success and gave them all a chance to show off.
The intention is to put the raised funds towards a new GasGas 50.
I went to the display put on by BDMC a year or two ago and think this idea of bringing Trials out of the sticks and into the open can only help to educate people on what safe and sensible riding is all about. Anything which goes towards quashing the stereotypical idea that motorcycle riding is all about antisocial screaming around streets is a good thing.
Anyway, Good on you BUMPY and WELL DONE to all the riders who took part.

Found it ... have a look at this

-
Mikee,
I recall some discussions on this a while ago.
Not sure if this helps you but the main idea was to put a drain in the bottom of the airbox so that any water would collect and could be drained out.
I can't find the thread at the moment but it might be worth a look.

Hi,
BUMPY (www.bumpy.org.uk) is a Bradford based charity organisation which, amongst other things, are training young people (6 - 16 years) in trials riding.
As the young people are developing their skills they have identified a need to purchase a 50cc trials bike to enable the younger members to ride and learn alongside the older ones.
So, on Saturday 8th Sept at midday they are holding a fund raising event at the George Hotel, Low Moor, Bradford
Instead of riding on Thursday evening we spent the time building obstacles and intend to hold a demonstration on Saturday so you can see how well they are doing
If any of you are around it would be really great to see you there and help support them
If anyone could donate a prize towards the raffle/tombola (wine, bubble bath, sweets, tools, unwanted xmas presents, ANYTHING) we'd all really appreciate it.
I'll drop a followup to this post and let you know how it went

Forgive my ignorance
but don't all makes have their own problems?
-
Hi NeonSurge,
I rode as a kid (in the 70's) and at 17 sold my Bultaco - cars had greater attraction.
More than 20 years on, when my lad got to 8 or 9 he nagged me to death for a bike till I gave in and bought him one.
The first time I rode his bike I felt like a teenager and was hooked all over again.
With the excuse that I needed to ride with him I bought myself a bike.
We don't ride competitions and aren't members of a club, we just ride together for the fun of it. I coach him, he challenges me.
I'm not saying you need a 20 year break, but a break gave my enthusiasm a huge boost.
Couple that with the enjoyment of seeing my lad develop and I'm getting that buzz I had at 16.
You and I spoke at Hawkstone, you thought your lad was developing well on his onza and might get a real bike soon.
Maybe that'll be the boost you need.
Maybe we need to meet up for a 4-some sometime.
Fancy that?

Great, Thanks for the advice Guys
We were at the British round today and, despite spontaneous combustion, Beta's are still still my preferred choice, for the reasons you said.
... though I will try and find the opportunity to sample the other makes.
I seem to recall a couple of issues with Betas (carb draining and electrics, any more?)
Are these limited to certain years ? How would I tell if the bikes had these problems ?
Are they easy to cure ?
Thanks again for your help

Hi All,
Hawkstone has inspired me to look at upgrading my 97 Techno
Right now it's just a dream, but you never know.
Cash would be tight so I'd need to choose the age/condition carefully .... I think I'm looking at Rev3 2003 onwards.
Does anyone have any advice on what's particularly good or bad on the Rev 3 models 2003 ->
I'm really not a good rider so I don't think manufacturer differences would mean much to my performance, I'm looking at Rev3 'cos I know Betas and they're easy to work on ... but do you think I should try riding makes first?
Any advice on what good/bad points I should be looking out for
Does anyone have recent experience of buying these bikes on eBay ....
are they really any cheaper
are they mostly rubbish or stolen (allegedly!) ?
Any advice greatly appreciated
-
I'm planning on getting up there with my lad
current forecasts look good
-
Thanks for the warning Telecat

Hiya,
Here you go,
80:1 means for every 80ml of fuel you need 1ml of oil
So for 5 litres, that means 62.5ml of oil
(5000ml/80 = 62.5ml)
-
It was far too hot
We got a little sunburn
-
Thanks for the update Edgas250
We'll be setting off soon from Leeds .... bit grey and wet here.
-
Thanks Slapshot
Yeah it's not what we wanted to hear but at least we know.
Last year it was fun to have the occassional downpoor but it will be worse this year I think
At least we know to take brollies rather than suncream
-
Great, thanks for that.
Really looking forward to it.
-
Looking forward to the MacKenzie National on 5th Aug (weekend after Hawkstone)
Can anyone offer advice on how best to get there/exact location
I know it's at Brimham Rocks (near Pateley Bridge) but we've never been there.
