Hi
its seems to have taken an eternity, but the montesa is finally complete.
A combination of being let down by parts suppliers, lack of motivation, because of part supplier and work meant it took far longer than i thought,
it was also impossible to source a seat,so i made a fibreglass base and had it covered.
Also a few 348 parts mixed in just to confuse matters further.
The problem i have is that it fires up ok but smokes like no tomorrow under load in has very little power, would this be crank oil seals?
I was told the engine was fully rebuilt when i bought it.
Your help/advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks Steve

Hi John
what a fantastic job you've done mate,be a shame to use it lol
I got my tank back yesterday,a week late but not a problem, because iv'e been effed about like you wouldn't believe by Vallmoto
All i can say is be very wary if you order anything,
Online it says everything in stock,
so i ordered the bits i needed cables etc and a speedo and airbox paid my 250 euros
Email next day,no speedo or airbox, six weeks later no parts no refund.
Asked if they can get me a seat, sent a picture of tank unit,no reply,
its a shame In Motion doesn't have everything i need.ordered some bits and they were in Spain in four days
Moan over
cheers Steve

Hi
Well, after about 2 hours and god knows how many attempts i finally got the bearing cups out using an old long plug spanner sat on the cup lip wedged in by a screwdriver top and bottom
A couple of cracks with a lump hammer, bingo job done.
Still waiting for new bearings and other parts to arrive
Not been idle tho, three hours with an abrasive wheel and lots of spit and polish this into this
Cheers Steve

Hi John
The bike looks great,
Ive ordered some taper bearings from in motion so all the front ends off.but im struggling to get the old cups out.
you and Wobbler fitted some so any tips,
On the early frame they knocked straight out,but the later frame seems to have a internal seat,
Advice would be appreciated
Cheers Steve
Also does it say what model the double seater is on your logbook as it doesnt on my Spanish one,It might help me track a seaf down

Hi Yamanx
Wow, what a gorgeous bike
Steve

Hi
Well this is what i got for a described complete but in bits 71 247,
Its actually a 72/73 far from complete but i got a very clean 627 carb,as new shocks and a complete exhaust in great condition, which i can use on the bike im working on.
The swinging arm is also better than the one on the bike at the moment, which had to be cut out of the frame,
It was a 4 hour round trip but i haggled the bloke down to 200 euros so i think i did ok,
I can now start work on it again,
Im in two minds about ordering chrome mudguards i dont really like the plastic ones that came with the original bike.
Cheers Steve

Hi John
The bikes looking great
Unfortunately ive come to a standstill,as most of Spain closes in August for holidays so i cant get parts, Today Its been nudging 40 degrees so you cant blame them.
Still cant find a seat
Cheers Steve

these pics are the sellers off the website
-
sorry its 625, cant find it on Amal website, but looks like a mk11 concentric, which seem to be universal, you just re jet and get correct manifold kit.
is 25mm big enough?,the lad selling it says it is for a 247.
I appreciate everyones help.
i dont want to buy wrong parts
-
Hi John
i had 627 wrote down, thought it might be for later models but suitable
steve
-
Damn, now caught the bug,
ive got the chance of a 71 247, seller says complete, but in bits, including engine, frame still white, 250euros
Worth a look, but it will be 200 kilometer round trip.

Hi is a Amal L2 626 suitable for a 247, it looks newer than carbs ive seen,or is it just for later models
Cheers Steve
-
Hi Wobbler
When its finished it wont be for show,we have some incredible countryside in southern Spain,
you can ride the mountains or river beds with no hassle.

Hi
Busy day on the dry build,
I now have a better iidea of what i need,
carb, ive found new Amal on a spanish website, but the seller wont answer emails
By the way how much is the mikuni option and where can i buy it?
seat which i cant seem to find anywhere.any ideas anyone ,shocks etc
There is a new speedo, but it looks like its off a different model, the hole for the cable is round while the cable is square.
The header pipe is fitted but i had to lift the engine up out of the mounts slightly, its just touching the frame with the engine back in situ,
its something i can live with,
On the picture of middle silencer,is this the correct piece?,I bought header pipe and this off ebay in England and a mate brought it over,
the headers ok,the silencer looks it been used as a anvil.
Also im not happy with the paint job on the tank, so ill flatten that off and re do,
Sorry if ive bored you
Cheers Steve

Hi John
This is a pic of spacer.
someone must have welded a washer in at sometime, but no idea why.
everything looks straight,no kinks in frame or damage to bottom tubes or bash plate.
Looks like a job for the grinder and take it from there.
Ill start and post pics as restoration progresses.
Thanks for your help.

Hi John
Sorry to trouble you again.
On your new frame is there a spacer in the front engine mounting bracket[right hand side looking from front to back of the bike]or are they flush like the other mountings.
On mine there is said spacer but dont know if its been added after for some reason,
If its been added after this could be whats stopping the engine moving into its correct position,
Cheers Steve
-
Hi John
Thanks for posting pics.
I really am stumped now,the frames straight, the engine lines up perfectly in brackets,
By the way the frame is the same as your new project,
Do you know if the round type barrel was fitted to bigger models?
could the engine have been rebuilt with a bigger barrel and piston?
Thanks Steve
-
Hi
The exhaust problem.
Cheers Steve
-
Hi
The frame down tube.the inlet sits a little behind the tube making it impossible to screw clamp into the head?????????
Cheers Steve
-
Thanks for the reply Wobbler
confusion now reigns.
Theres no way the exhaust clamp will screw in with engine bolted up,so ive lifted the engine the clamp fits.
with the bike came a spare barrel and piston, the same clamp is too small for inlet.
Have i got correct barrel on? did montesa change inlet sizes.
the bike is a 77 matching nos 21m 246++
im waiting for the manual to arrive.it might shed some light on the situation.
Ill try and post pics tomorrow
Many thanks
Steve

HI
i dont know if you have heard of this website
www.vallmoto.com its in Spain but gives translation option
sells new parts for older montesas.
All my parts for the 247 are coming from there, some of the prices are nearly as cheap as second hand stuff on ebay
Cheers Steve
