Thanks Scot,
I'll go with that.
Another daft question, how does one tell the difference between a 428 and 520 chain?

Hello guys,
Any ideas re the torque settings?
Larry 2.

Thanks guys,
Got the rings/ piston sorted. Any idea what the torque settings for the cylinder head studs are? Or does one go by feel,

Thanks guys,
There's a couple of options re. piston which I will try.
Regards chroming, I decided to purchase some new parts ( handlebars, Levers) and will refurbish some other stuff.
I have this notion particularly about old cars and in this case, bikes, that there should be some evidence of a past life so I tend to leave some knocks and dinks as a sign of that. I don't seek perfection because if one wants that, just buy a new machine. So I want my machinery to be just like me, scarred mentally and physically!

Things have been at a standstill for a good while due to illness. But I have started to work on the old Model 10 once again. Ordered a bunch of spares from Inmotion and managed to obtain a rear brake plate on Ebay all the way from Utah! The old one was badly broken.
Anyway, a question, how the bloody hell does one compress the rings to get the piston into the bore? Don't tell me I have to get a ring compressor please!!
I await guidance!

Just purchased a set from inmotion (great service!) for my model ten. They fit perfectly.

This is so terribly sad. Although relatively new to this forum, Larry helped me locate a gear for my model 10 and gave me great advice about various aspects of the rebuild.
He always came across as a true gentleman who truly enjoyed his bikes, his fishing and, more than anything, helping people.
I am truly shocked. I will miss him greatly.

Hello guys,
Just got a quote for chroming levers, handlebars etc. A bit eye watering! I think I'll go with some new stuff instead which will work out cheaper.
It'll be the new year before I put that in train at this stage.
Happy Christmas all. Thanks for the help during the year.

My word Stuart, were they that badly painted?!

Hello Markg,
As you may see elsewhere on the forum, I have a 1968 model 10 No.1275 which doesn't have a number on the frame and as far as I can gather did not have a replacement frame. Although it does have a frame number on the logbook as it was registered for road use.
Strange, but it seems this crops up from time to time.

Thanks Speshal,
I've made several attempts to get into the shed but have been repeatedly ambushed!
No names, no pack drill!!

Thanks Model80,
No worries, happens me all the time! It'll turn up when you're not looking for it.
Work on the bike is kind of intermittent at the mo between trying to keep the grass cut and keeping the jungle at bay!
Onwards and upwards, as they say.

Thanks Larry,
Good to have that info. Still quite a way to go but all this help will finally come good!

Hello guys,
Just a small update.
Got the tank back from the spray shop. I think it looks pretty good. I have to apply the decals but forgot to measure the exact location, Doh! I will try to estimate from my photos.
I also refurbished the casings.
Re. clutch pressure adjustment, I see elsewhere that it seems like trial and error is the order of the day. Any views?

Model 80,
No haven't tried that but I'll do it and see what I get.
Trouble is if there's a bit of wear in the cylinder and on the ring, then the gap may not make me any wiser.
Anyway, what gap should I expect?
Thanks for the response,
Larry 2.

Model 80,
Here's a pic of the piston top. As you can see there's no further markings.
Larry 2.
-
Well done my man, looks pretty good!
Larry 2.
-
Thanks Model80 and Bondy,
There are no other marks on the piston that I can see but I'll put up a pic anyway.
If the piston is std I think new rings should do as there's very little wear on the cylinder. But I still have to establish that.
Larry 2.
-
Guys,
Another question coming up!
Do these marks on the piston mean standard or oversize?
Larry 2.

Thanks for that Larry, a man after my own heart! I always like to refurbish stuff if I can. I'll get to work on the plates.
I've removed the cylinder head and barrel so I may be able to jam the crank to get a turn on the nut.
I'll keep you posted.

Hello Guys,
Decided to have a look at the clutch/ gearbox area. I reckon the clutch plates will have to be replaced (see pic) There is wear on the inner lugs. It may be difficult to source these. What do you think?
Also the drive chain seems have a fair bit of play. Your views on this would be welcome.
Thirdly, How can one loosen the flywheel nut? Is it left or right hand thread? Can't find anywhere to jam things in order to get a turn on it. (I'm sure this is covered somewhere on the forum but I'm taking a shortcut!)

Well done Larry!
Sounds like a pretty good outcome.

That would frighten the hell out of me, I would have avoided eye contact and waited for the lake to recede!!
Best of luck anyway Larry.

The general layout seems to be very like my Model 10. Are these older or younger?
What are the differences. I know these questions are daft to you guys but for me "best be a fool for five minutes than an idiot all ones life"!

Just gave the tank to a pro for restoration.
Dealing with it myself would be beyond my ability I think, and I might make a mess.
He reckons about two to three weeks. Fingers crossed!
