    My Ty175

Looking good! One of my favorite parts of building the ty was using a wire brush attatchment on the end of an electric drill to grind off the paint (and surface rust in spots, and then spray paint it with a few good coats of higheat black paint (flat black ). And taking off the heatshield, masking over the original 175 sticker and then repainting mine white. When it dried, I took off the masking tape covering the sticker and it looked like it had never been painted, but was just brand new. Turned out great, just trying to give an idea as to what you could start with if you wanted a fun little project hehe Can't wait to see more pics of your bike though fatboyty. Love seein' them bikes. lol take care
  2. Patience is the key. It took me about one month to get most of the work done... then I let it sit for about 3 weeks while I looked at the tarnished rims. Finally I decided I missed riding (dispite the snow) and wanted to clean them up so I could ride it around. After it was all said and done though, the hours and work I put into it are forgotten and I'm just left with a clean bike. I saw your pics in that other thread fatboyty, and they definatly look familiar! Do yourself and take as many pics of it comming apart. Plus you can show us all when you're done!!
  3. Mine is broken too, well the on/off switch works great. But the highbeam/lowbeam switch is broken off. So I can turn it on and off, but it's always on highbeam! I too am interested in finding one if there are any sources out there for one.. Mind you, mind still works so it won't even be a priority to get it replaced.
  4. haha No problem here. Glad you can ride! Enjoy that sweet sweet bike!
  5. That's great to hear Any more information on it? What went wrong etc??
  6. haha whoa! That puts mine to shame, well almost. But yeah, I wouldn't ride that bike! It belongs in a museum or at Barrett Jackson... sold.
  7. Yeah but he can't get it into gear at all
  8. New plates I'd say.. But I'm no pro. I think if it isn't shifting up into other gears, something is binding for sure. New plates, or another transmission I'd think

    Tubed Or Not

It might stay on at that pressure... But even if you had to run it at like 8 or 10 it wouldn't be that bad.. How many mountains do you intend on climbing!?!?!!! haha just kidding I don't know if it would stay on at such a low pressure like 3or4psi. If it does, you might also get the walls of the tire wrinkling, which will crack the tire and make it useless in a couple years. It should work though, just try and see what pressure works best for your needs

    Tubed Or Not

No Problem Eddy That's pretty neat odds we're both had the same bikes it our families!(especially because I live in Canada, and as far as I can tell, you live in the UK?) lol, 175 for life!! By the way, I just got a new michelin competition trials rear tire for my 175 and it is tubed.. I think if I were to try to put on a tubless, it would leak all the air out through the spokes in about... 1 second? I haven't put the new rear tire on yet, but the bike still has it original on it! And for a 30 year old bike, its rubber is still in great shape.. aside from the fact it has zero give to it and the tired is ROCK HARD! (okay, so it's not THAT great lol) I'll be putting it on in the next week I hope.. So there will be a couple pics of going through that posted.. I have never switched a tire (dad has) so it shouldn't be too hard (the rear tire had been off within the last year to put a new tube in it, I must have ran over a nail or something sharp ). And for your question Dale, I think you could fit a tubeless tire to the rim, but when it comes to filling it with air, it will just leak out if it's not a tubeless rim. I think you could put a tube inside it, but it wouldn't be able to run at low psi without riding on the sides of the tire (hurts just thinking about it!). Good luck and let us know how it works out for you

    Tubed Or Not

Twin shocks have two rear shock absorbers on the outsite of the rear tire.. and a mono shock is found on new bikes that have one shock in front of the tire that works for the entire rear arm. Here's a pic to show you what I mean: Twin Shock: Mono Shock: (my Dad had a 250 like that ) Just look at the rear shocks and notice the difference:)

    Ty Web Sites

What kind of hints do you need? I just recently rebuilt mine.. Here's a hint though! clean the airfilter, and respray it down with the filter spray (or whatever you perfer).. and clean the carb out (be extra sure to not lose anything, or you're done, game over). Check your cables, relube them.. check your chain, it might need to be replaced, lube it for sure! When I see a chain without lube, it makes me cringe. If you have any specific questions, just ask! I'm sure there is someone on here who can off your advice with anything. - JackMan edit: If you haven't seen this site before, check out http://www.bjracing.com/VINTY175.htm I almost had to order an airfilter from them, but after searching out the local yam dealers, one could finally order me one in! But I've heard good things about B&J Racing! good luck!
  13. Hey, thanks so much for the links! Now that I'm getting back into it, It's great to see that there are still people around my area (well, within a radius of 300km lol) are still riding trials competitivly.. I can't wait to get into it. And as for your avatar Slapshot 3, " Go Leafs Go !!" (wish I could play hockey though! haha) - JackMan
  14. Thanks for the comments!! It makes it worth the work in the end to hear what people think of it.. can't wait to build the next one.. if I can get my hands on another ty175 thanks again guys! -JackMan p.s. - Good luck with yours Monty!! :santa1:
  15. Hey, Thanks for the Welcome I'm around the Hamilton area.. We used to compete in trials (novice/intermediate) back in the late 90's.. but we haven't been in the trials scene for about 8 years, so I have to do a little more research of the clubs in my area that are still around and kehin, I do watch nascar.. but I'm no Jack-Man lol
  16. Hey everone, I am new to this forum and wanted to say I'm glad I stumbled by it! I've read tons of information already, and learned alot in the last few days.. I just restored my 1978 yamaha ty 175 and wrote a thread about ithere. Feel free to check it out and give your opinions in that thread I'm only 18, and this is my first bike to my name (handed down).. but I have the bug for rebuilding them now, and I absolutely love riding trials.. So I hope I can become a regular here at these forums eventually! Thanks for the great site guys! Be sure to check out my ty!!! thanks - JackMan
  17. Hey everyone! I've been riding my dad's old 78 ty 175 up at the annual "bike weekends" at the cottage when my family and friends go up to do some hard riding.. (there are probably 20 people that go, family and friends.. being 18, they figure I'm old enough to ride with them) Now I didn't keep the bike to it's original silver colour all over, I wanted to paint some accessories gloss black to make them stand out and make it unique to my likings.. so don't flame be about not keeping it original I plan on owning this bike forever haha Anyways, it took about 2 months for me to finish, and my friend took pics of my progess the entire time.. there are over 100 mb of high quality pics, but I'll show more than a few! I hope you all like it, I've officially become in love with this bike.. It used to be just an old bike that got be down the trail, but now it's my baby! I figured it needed to look new again because it had just gotten the engine rebuilt about 3 years ago when the oil injector stopped and it siezed the engine! Anyways, now it's been bored out a little larger, and runs like a top. The cables had also been replaced about 2 years ago so I figured it only made sence to bring the rest of the appearance back to new again aswell. This is the first bike I've restored. And I think I'll consider doing many more! I absolutely loved working on it.. I'm thinking another 175 next, or maybe a tl125. Here are the pics, 18 of them.. Before Pic up at the cottage Before Pic... Looks not too bad, but I like my machines clean! The project as begun! And I seem rather anxious to get it in a million pieces.. Labeling each part in ziplock bags is a MUST) (here you can see how rough the bike really looks at close up, notice the handlebars are all chewed up from taping on extra sparkplugs and a socket wrench! NO JOKE! hahaha, I ended up using a wirebrush attatchment on a drill to bring it back down to metal, and then painted it the same colour as the bike frame silver) (the whole bike strip down took me 2 hours, which was surprising to me because I had never done it before... besides servicing my old minibikes with my dad) (after prepping the frame for primer before paint) (I repainted the engine with highheat gloss black.. though it cam out flat anyway, and then used sandpaper to grind the edges down so looks new and original!) It's been all buffed up and looks great! a huge improvement from what it looked like before is starting to become noticable) (this is me grinding off the headlight grill thing because it was all broken and warped, I was very scared I'd mess it up, but autosol buffed it right up and I think it looks better this way, much better) (this is a before and after...rather, an after and before of the headlight brackets after buffing it with autosol) (putting on a final to-do list.. like put on the chain, and put on the fuel line) since these pictures have been taken, I've done all that and have ridden it out in the snow and it runs great) (I'm still waiting on that darn YAMAHA decal on the tank..) I hope you all like the restoration! Let me know your opinions on it! Thanks for looking!! - JackMan p.s. - sorry there's so many pictures, but better too many than not enough right??
