Just stripped and cleaned carb thoroughly having had it keep stalling when I took it away. Now just waiting for my new fan rectifier to come and then ride it knowing it is cooling properly...hopefully.
-
Ok. Good information thanks. I thought the black box was a relay of some sort (shows what I know..lol) , so that is the rectifier on these. Non reparable I guess? It might be time to learn how to use a multimeter. I wouldn't know where to start to test. I do have one though.
Diagram source? Gas Gas USA?

I agree with the switch. We were going to do that last night. However, if it was just the thermostat then bypassing the two wires would set the fan running. It didn't, but if I knew where the power was coming from (yellow?) I could use a length of wire and spades, could I not?
-
Well the good news. The fan works when a 12v current is attached, spinning nice and quietly. The bad that once the wires on the thermostat are connected it doesn't seem to want to, so not such an obvious quick fix. I will post some pictures to see what your thoughts are. There needs to be live feed from somewhere. The yellow? If I could only do a temp fix that would be great and I will take the bike away with me.
I will take some wire and spade connectors.
-
I will let you know when i have checked. I read somewhere that a yamaha fan fit. I am sure some one will confirm this.
-
Good. Thought as much. Thanks be a shame not to take the bike with me. Assiming the fan is working of course. First thing to check when home.
-
As a quick fix is it possible to have the fan running all the time by joining the wires someqhere? I am thinking just as a temporary measure so i can take it through to wales.
-
Thanks for yor answers. Hopefully a quick fix. Want to take it through to Wales when iget back from Corfu. Its a tough life. Lol
-
I actually managed to have a proper go on the bike at the weekend. Quite a hot day. How quickly would onenormally expect the fan to come on. Some water out of the overflow but i had topped up.
No sign if fan. Rode in 5 min bursts. Is it time to read the above fan post? Lol

Thanks mate. Wasnt keen on universal ones. They all say left hand mount but the holes on right on mine.
-
I can see that not having a side stand will soon become a pain. Most of the ones I see listed are universal fit rather than gasgas Has anybody got any ideas or recommendations as to where I might get one?
-
Not so much anger as disappointment, as reasonable service costs nothing. Not cowboy welding, but inconsistent. But as I said, it does seem to be all good when assembled, so here's to 10 years plus of keeping the bike on the back.
-
No but i expect a degree common courtesy. Just a simple ask. Most people that we deal with are hardly multi nationals in this niche sport. But you seem a fan with a similar degree of ignorance. If instructions are not fitf for purpose or as Paul said i could have had the model with less overhang at the rear had they only taken the time to look at the photos i sent originally
However. It does look pretty good once all loaded.

Thanks for the info. Having enquired of Dave Cooper as to the preferred rack they said the 4x4 one despite sending a picture of the drop plate I have. So it arrived, over a week after order, and instructions that were for a standard 2 bolt tow ball. I have therefore fit it as per the picture. I sits well back, although I can't see how else it fits.
However, when contacting them they had the gall to ask if I had read the instructions, to which I of course replied the affirmative but they were not fit for purpose.
My experience with Dave Cooper has been terse replies to reasonable requests, no apology for not being able to make the rack up in time for my holiday (again despite a reasonable request) poor instructions, welding quality that my mate will have a fit about. If the rack does the trick then fine, but the customer service has been very poor.

No such things as daylight MOT. If they are not fitted, they can't be tested. The only requirement is a horn, other than its general road worthiness. I was having a chat with my local MOT chap when he was doing my XR600. Might help if you can find a bike sympathetic tester rather than some officious jobs worth though.
-
Well a local rider came over and declared my bike to be a good example, with only a few minor check to do. The chain needs tightening a little and I just need to check the coolant level. I assume this is just a case of lifting the fuel tank. I may drain at some point. Otherwise he says it rides well and doesn't;t appear to have had a hard life, which is good to know.

I think that's the plan. Empty out the ATF which may be old anyway, then try the 10w 40 which I have some of anyway. Well at least until I can find the 5w 30.
-
Don't seem to be able to get 5w 30 anywhere. I have some 10w 40 at home, so it's either that or the ATF.
At least the brake fluid was straight forward. lol
-
Way too much free play at the moment so reckon I will have to adjust the actual lever first and then the screw to the plunger. I think the lever hits the grip before it has fully depressed. Now I have a holiday I will get more chance to look. Do I take it these take conventional brake fluid is it the oil version?
Looking through the viewing window, it would appear the gearbox oil has the red tinge of ATF.
-
Good! I just didn't want some kick start detent spring flying up in the air. LOL
In the absence of being able to get 5w 30 I may well have to try the 10/40 option.
Then onto the clutch lever. There is a lot of travel before it move the small tension spring but there isn't a lot left on the adjustment thread to take it in.
BTW thanks for the help so far. Much appreciated.

That's the video I watched and seemed to imply I either use the viewing hole or a filer right near the thermostat housing. Not obvious on mine. The only place that is obvious is the one above the kick start but that is not referred to in the video, so is it not that.
-
I agree each to their own. I just want to be as accurate with things as I can. There must be a definitive answer surely?
Watching the Gas Gas video, he suggests you have to pour in the oil through the viewing glass bolt hole below the kick start when the bike is on its side. Not what I thought the allen bolt above the kick sttart. Am I missing something or just being a bit thick?
-
Not recommended for the Edition 280's though is it?
-
What makes of oil do the 5w 30 mineral. All my searches seem to just find synth or semi synth.
