Just add seeds and you get a lovely flower box the envy of other riders.
Yep it gets loads of crap in it but it works ok as the filter stops the dirt unlike the Beta Rev3`s i had.
-
Sounds like its had a rebuild done badly then sold on. Ring GasGas UK and you get an option for tech support a Mr Hipwell will give you unlimited advise and explain how to carry out work on anything you need to know.
The idle gear is a common failure on a Gasser even if you slowly engage the kickstart then kick. This usually ends up with a noise and if unlucky twists the kickstart shaft and cracks the engine casing. To inspect the idle gear it must be remove as its the inner side that wears.
The clutch has a roller bearing and washer.
You could always ring the seller and point out its not fit for purpose and aks for some resolve as selling something faulty is not on.
-
I reckon heat will be an issue somewhere down the line as the rad is sat behind the petrol tank and above the cylinder. The rear shock from what i can tell seems wrapped around by the exhaust.
-
Yep its about right 3 ish turns out. Also the plug gap needs to be 0.5mm which helps starting issues.
I put 75ml oil in 5L fuel and it runs really well.
-
Oil can get in from the bolt which is at the 2 oclock postion. This has a copper washer and seals of gearbox oil, as does the mains seals as they are gearbox feed, but have two seals one on mains and one on the the case.
I would expect some water to get into the case over a period so would just clean it and check before jumping in unless is really bad.
-
So what bike won the Scott then something unreliable
-
Check the water pump that its fit for purpose as you need a fan and water pump basically to cool a bike.
-
Then to seat the tyre, do you drive on the rim to mash that onto the new tyre
Only in America
-
Yep my JTR was a rattler to and the silicone on it helps for a while. Dont worry im sure it be fine after all its old bike and id expect a rattle or two but the engines were good old beasts back then.
-
Ive had a couple of attempts and the first time i had 2 rear 1 front as i ran to low on pressure. I agree you find little in grip loss, but its rough going and you will ride at a fair old pace all day if you want to get in on time.
Carry some Jelly babies as they really give you an energy hit if you hit a wall. Stick a drink to each petrol can and snickers bar and label each petrol can with your number on.
Best of luck and post your review on how you get on.

Check the carb float level. Remove carb and the bottom then hold upside down, the brass arm float should be 16mm from the carb base ie where it seats to the removed base. I have teaked mine to 15mm as to see if it improves cold starting which sometimes only starts if i lie the bike on its side to flood it.
Mine seems not to get enough fuel from cold so would like to know if you can alter the choke to aid the starting.
-
That is arm and a leg money, i was guessing
-
Where did you purchase the 2T exhaust and how much?
-
I like the look of the 2011 and maybe getting a new bike shortly if things pan out for me. I had numerous Rev3`s and always had an issue with the air filters on them. They did filter the complete airbox unlike GasGas which works alot better as it resides in the airbox and only filters the carb inlet. I use to get crap get into the carb on me Rev`s even though i did keep on top of cleaning them to which i do less on the GasGas and never suffer.
Also do they still pi55 fuel out unless you mod them ?
-
Gas Gas provide great service and Mr Not sure which Hipwell is a fantastic bloke on advice. The issue i take is having spoken to a owner of a Gas Gas 2011 this weekend he said his rear wheel broke some spokes and was offered no support, which he said was the same on a 2010 when he had another failure on a minor issue of little cost but yet again was given no warranty support on a month or so bike.
My friend had a two year old Rev3 and the casing around the water pump failed and gave J Lampink the frame and engine number and recieved a free casing.
I think its fair to voice an opinion as we live in a free world and should praise good and bad to make our
choices as we are the customer.
-
Im maybe be in for a new bike soon and wonder what to get. A big factor is GasGas uk give a 10 minute warranty unlike J Lampkin. Im uncertain as if it was GasGas id try importing if it was worth it seen as you dont get a warranty, so see little point buying
from Uk.
My current Gasser is an import and ive had to rebuild the engine twice but it runs great unlike the Rev3 bikes that i had. I always seemed to have Carb issues so tried a Gasser and find it runs well other than weak gearbox.
Beta is backed to the hilt by J Lampkin and this i know as he bought me a new wheel once, so this is a factor as i would not wish to purchase a bike and pay for component failure.
-
Ive had new 01 02 03 05 Beta Rev3 and yes they always run but never that well. As for Mr J Lampkin then he is fantastic and goes beyond customer service, an amazing credit to Beta.
Well me Gasser runs way better and rides way better, however when it goes wrong it really does. I now have learnt how to rebuild the bike every little nut n bolt. Gas Gas provide next day and Mr Hipwell has help me rebuild my gearbox with his advice over the phone. Next bike GasGas 2011.
I guess its just pot luck at the end of the day.

The throttle body does matter as most of my friends and i are inters and we all use slow action as fast action spins up. I find 11 42 to fast for slow rock sections as you end up using the clutch way to much. A ex brit champion made me ride a section without using the clutch as he said if you use it then you are starting off again finding traction each time you use it. Since then ive always ridden in lower gears and found it better.
-
Hi i had a couple of issues finding grip having come off a Beta 250 onto my GasGas 300. I have 10/42 and the big improvement was the throttle change from a white/ fast action to a black /slow action, which i now find gives me plenty of control.
I would get a 10T on as you are geared very low and check the throttle body to see what it is as standard is fast action. You can also put a head spacer on which costs
-
I would avoid a GasGas that old as they were the early models and had a few issues until the 2005 models. A 300 is okish and as stated the 280 is a beast. If you have a limited buget then a Beta around 03 04 will be a better bet as they came out in 2000 and the engine is still used today from the 1994 Techno to present bar a few mods.
Some might say a Montesa 315R but i never rated them having had 2 then went onto Betas then GasGas.
Shercos are weak engine wise early models and Scorpas are flimsy on the petrol tanks and engine casings.
Overall i would try and get a 250 as you may end up fighting the bike instead of controlling it. Dont rush in
-
A rattle maybe but a knocking noise is generally a sign of pending doom. DOOOM I TEL THEE, DOOM LIKE IVE NEVER HEARD BEFORE, RUN TO THE HILLS
I would let someone listen to it and then consider what to do.
-
If the woodruff key has gone you may not need a flywheel puller as i leant the bike over and slight tap and of it fell. Gjbiker is right it is most likely the cause of your problems.
-
Is the exhaust a WES as it looks like one which i had on me TY175 back in 83. I drilled and tapped the WES and refitted the exhaust guard on which would look better. Brings back fond memories like points condensors and no brakes after going through deep water. Nice job
-
No Fat and bald is never a good look in my honest opinion.
-
Yep it sits in the crank and sits prowd so to accomodate the the flywheel which has a grove. I would use thread lock when you do refit the new key.
