  1. Looks like we're just about sorted. Never really had this sort of trouble before, but really unlucky with number of people away one place or another.

We normally use the rider/observer idea for our Forest Trophy trial as the result is not of great importance. Not sure it'd be great for the Novogar though as I reckon there's a fair chance of big disputes with riders observing competitors. Maybe we could try it with some clubman riders next year if we need to.

Thanks to those able to help anyway, especially the dads that have riders in the event. Ray Crinson, Steve Fox, Andrew Huxley, and a few others I believe. To the rest of the riders and their support crew, please bear in mind that there are riders out there with less support than they may have had, because the support crew are observing - please try to help out riders with breakdowns/punctures etc.

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow - let's hope we can get a bit of sun, the water's been pretty deep recently.

  2. Hi all,

REALLY short of observers for this weekends Novogar trial (Sunday 6th Sept). Start is 20 miles West of Welshpool in a little village called Llangadfan.

If anybody fancies being a saviour, please give me (Gaz Hinton), Jean or Elwyn a call on 01691 828330 or my mobile 07545 262327.

It's a long slog to mark out 40 sections over 26 miles, but a worse nightmare to find the observers for it at the end. :D

If anybody is interested, you are able to bring a bike along if you like, but most of the sections are within a few yards of the road/track also.

Nobody minds you scrubbing the sections off while there's no riders about

Once you're on the land there is no road work needed - central parking spot will let you travel all around it by bike!

    Any help really appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Gaz Hinton

  3. Regs now out for the Mid Wales Novogar trial on 6th September.

Moved to two weeks earlier this year so we don't clash with the Hipwell. Mainly because most of our lads would like to ride both.

Entries close on 1st September or when full - 100 rider limit.

Clubman course available this year - deviations from the Novogar route where possible. Yet to find out what level this will be marked out at, but the Novogar will remain at a similar level to previous years.

  4. The uk importers of Beta and Sherco have both advised me in the past to use semi synthetic and not full synthetic. I'll stick with semi!

Is that just for the smaller ones then? I've never seen Rathmell recommend anything other than synthetic, but I suppose I've never asked about the 80.

It's definitely worth checking. Sherco recommend K2 which is fully synthetic. I'm fairly sure Rathmell recommends Ipone fully synthetic.

Semi-synthetic in the gearbox, fully synthetic pre-mix.

  5. I've used exactly that "silkolen comp 2 premix synthetic" in my lads Beta 50, Sherco 80, and my 290, for 6 years now. It's the best running Sherco I know of - 6 years from new real good hammering carrying my hefty load through the expert route, not even a new set of rings yet. The Beta ran really well on it too.

I mix it about 80:1 and does me proud.

  6. I reckon if you don't get a definitive answer, then vary it. Didn't have gyms when I was a kid, and no way was money going to be wasted on home gyms, dumbells, barbells.

As kids we spent every daylight hour on bikes (engine or not), and then taped torches to the handlebars

I know people know a lot more these days and can target muscle groups etc, but I really believe generally they're not naturally as fit. At 14-16 year old we were lumping round Fantic 240's and I honestly don't remember being tired. I remember thinking that at the time, seeing new people to the sport and wondering how long it would take them to get to the point where they don't get tired either. After a 16 year lay off I returned to trials and got tired on a bike for the first time that I remembered (and been tired ever since :D )

Bike fitness is 90% I reckon, and I suppose how often you can get on yer bike is going to affect it. I know I'll never get back on a bike enough to be fit enough to be comfortable with my bulk, which I carefully build through Strongbow applied at regular intervals, but I know I trained the easy way when I was fit - bike bike bike - you can't hit the wrong muscle groups that way.

  7. With 210 entries, unless you heard 106 people complaining, you're listening to the minority

Quite a few of the bigger trials are using the same rules. There's still enough of us fools willing to pay a fortune for the steam packet rip off to the Isle of Man every year, including you normally :D.

I've no doubt the argument will carry on for a long time yet. I actually enjoy riding both, but I definitely like the fact that there are differences. I like to ride the no stop from time to time, a change is as good as a rest they say and I like the variety, and it looks like a few hundred other people enjoy it too.

Having said that I've never ridden the Reeth 3 day yet (I bloody should have really) so my comments are not specific to Reeth.

  8. Just got home from todays fun trial, camped over last night.

They should be emailed over to me later tonight. I'll get 'em converted to PDF and hopefully up later tonight, unless I fall asleep, in which case they'll be up tomorrow :D

  9. Hi folks,

As many of you know, regs are out for the Forest Trophy Trial on 24th May.

I put some provisional regs out in a bit of a hurry this year, and unfortunately I butchered some regs from 4 years ago. These showed an entry fee of

  10. My lad has an 80cc Sherco, the one with the smaller forks.

I've just replaced the fork seals, but can't find any details for how much oil they're meant to hold.

I know it's 330ml in the standard forks, but can't find anything for the smaller ones.

    Anybody save me guessing?

    Thanks,

    Gaz

  11. This looks like the sort of thing I'll be after:

    Transit LPG

I've put it on here as I'm not really ready to buy one yet, but it looks like an ideal trials chariot, especially with the LPG conversion.

I could do with making sure I've still got a job in a few months before I get another vehicle.

There's a SWB version for sale nearer to home for me, also LPG - I need to have a measure up to see if I can squeeze a couple of seats in the back of a SWB and still get 2 bikes in. Anybody know?

Anybody got any negatives to throw in for these?

  12. Well thankfully I managed to stay ahead of the novices, BUT I did notice that 2 of the little C class lads gave me a kicking.

I didn't ride that bad and a few of the sections I had a blatant strength advantage to carry it over the big rocks. Those kids amaze me, and I don't mind them making me feel old

Ah well hopefully I can get moved to the bottom before too many riders start to join in with your tc lashing :D

  13. Finally, the only way I think this could be done is if the ACU get a working group of clubs together and discuss, then impose a system in the rules for all to use.

Working group? You having a larf? How did the ACU forum go this year? Wasn't that an attempt to get 8-10 people together for a chat? Everybody can think up grand ideas, but they've got to be realistic and 'do'able with a small army of hard working volunteers with ever increasing commitments away from the world of trials.

I've seen clubs fold when they try to do things on too grand a scale, because gradually people back away from being dragged in to the bigger commitment. That for me is a good reason not to spend big effort on something that many people don't even think is a problem.

What weekend you free for the working group? [please insert emoticon with a little troll holding a fishing rod]

  14. Great trial again yesterday. Unbelievable to see what some of these lads can do. The A class route scared the cr4p out of me just watching some of it :D

These YMSA trials seem to fill a gap for those lads that are hitting the top, I've noticed a few of our lads that ride them, it really does help them step up a level.

The B Class route is getting pretty tough, and for yesterdays trial, I dropped to riding Out of Class on the adult novice route - my excuse is that I can run round and look after my lad easier, and it gave my dodgy knee a rest (whimper whimper whinge whinge), but we all know the truth :D

I entered out of class, but unfortunately they put me in the results, so to those riders who do belong in that class - I've e-mailed them to be removed, I'm not pot hunting

See you at the next round folks!

    Gaz

  15. OK - will try to clear up.

There is no need for you to put any notice anywhere - or worry about a rider " complaining".

When a rider signs on - he signs to say he acknowledges the event will be run under ACU National Sporting Code, Standing Trials Regs & any Final Instructions etc.

In NSC ( included in handbook) 6.12 states that an Observer is an assistant to CC and appointed to judge a competitors performance - NO PROTEST OR APPEAL CAN BE ACCEPTED AGAINST A JUDGMENT MADE BY AN OBSERVER

So in simple terms if the Observer decides a benefit was gained by leaning on a tree and gives a one - then one it is - no protest ( complaint) or Appeal can be considered - in other words the Observers judgment is final. Same if he judges a baulk has occured etc.

I don't entirely agree (which is unusual as you're my Guru :-)).

The judgement made by an observer is whether an observer deems that a rider has broken one of the rules, i.e. did he actually go backwards, or did he touch down with his foot, did he have outside assistance. You can't change that - it's what he saw.

But...in my view, if the rule book just says his its a dab if his body touches, then the observer can't make a judgement call and say 'they meant body or machine so you're having a dab'. That's the observers interpretation of the rules which shouldn't be ambiguous, and the CoC should be happy to overrule if he believes the observer interpreted the rules incorrectly.

I reckon that either needs confirming or correcting, not particularly for club trials, but for Nationals etc - not sure how it would be corrected - issue an errata with next version of ACU magazine?

Just my thoughts anyway - open to a damned good slamming down as always :-)
