Oh joy, none of my flywheel pullers will fit the bloody machine.
Must I spend nearly £70 for one from Aprillia?
I'm beginning to dislike this bike.
-
Yeah man, have a look.
Cheers

I'm in Cumbria b40rt
I may as well give it a try pschrauber before I try to buy new cases.
Could be interesting?
-
I'm thinking, well it's knackered anyway so I might as well try a chemical metal, dremel and a rubbing block. Nothing to lose really?
Any ideas?
-
-
Well, it's just interesting.
Pulled the disc valve apart tonight and oh dear, oh deary me!
-
b40rt,
That makes it a pain in the ass then.
-
Does anyone have a diagram of the PBHB 26 carb?
I can't locate this second pilot jet.
-
b40rt,
It's an air screw. I'm lost here
-
I'll look for the second pilot jet, tried swapping the carbs but the Sherco has a smaller diameter mouth on the reed block. Bugger.
-
Right now I'm stumped.
The carb is spotlessly clean yet it will still only run on choke.
Am I looking at main seals?
-
Thanks pschrauber,
I've the stripped carb in an ultrasonic cleaner now. Once I get it out and dried off I'll list what sizes they all are so maybe you helpful folks can make sure they're the right sizes.
There was a lot of crud in the choke.
-
The vent hoses have the cut in them. I'll strip the carb more carefully this time, do you reckon swapping the carb from my Sherco is worth a try as Steve suggests? Can't hurt can it?
-
Hmmm, they're both Dellortos. Couldn't hurt to swap for a try.
Maybe needs more than a squirt with carb cleaner then you think?
-
I must be a sucker for an old dog. Recently got my 290 Sherco bucket of bolts going and I've come across a 1992 280 Aprillia climber that needs a bit of TLC.
It starts and runs but only on the choke.
I've cleaned out the carb, swilled out the tank and put fresh premix in. The carb and airbox rubbers are sealed tight and it's got a new plug BP5es.
I should say the bike has stood for a long while.
Any ideas from the good people of TC?

Well after figuring out the year of my engine '03-'04 not an '02. I got my timing set with a dial gauge and happy days, we're away and its running smoothly. I've put two base gaskets in it to soften the delivery a bit. It's worked to a point but it's still an animal. So happy it's running again and thank you all so much for all the great advice about my troubled Sherco.
-
Lineaway, you're absolutely right. Coming away from a job then going back with fresh eyes really helps. Thanks for the heads up.
-
Bilks, you're right, it's a '03-'04 flywheel. So this bike's had a bit of work done on it? I've not had it long (a couple of months).
When I took the flywheel off after the breakdown, first time stripping a motor, I didn't notice a keyway in the crank. I assumed it was an interference fit. In retrospect, the flywheel nut came off very easily. So maybe this was a disaster waiting to happen. The woodruff key is sheared so smoothly that initially I figured it was just a mark on the crank.
In my other posts I've put up, you'll see that it's never ran properly since I got it. I hoping that a lot of my problems stem from this issue.
-
Just been out to the garage, yeah it's sheared.
So once I've replaced it, it should be happy days?
Teach me for not torquing up the bloody flywheel!!
-
Had a day away from knackered trials bikes. Thanks for the input, wife is happier now, took the family out for a meal to score brownie points.
I've stuck another post up tonight, can you guys help me out?
-
You helpful folks on TC have been so helpful to this newbie so far. So here I go again.
I've split and rebuilt my 290 after a leaky centre gasket. All went well until I started it (2nd kick), it ran well for a few seconds then it all went a bit wrong.
Heard a rubbing noise and straight away I'd realised that is not torqued up the flywheel and it'd come loose. I'd put the stator back on in exactly the same position. I've no spark at all. The Ryan Young site shows a flywheel with several holes for lining up and the stator plate. Mine only has two holes for the holding tool. I'm lost and need some assistance please.
Eventually I'll be able to offer advice, but until then, I'm asking again.
Thanks everybody.

Right then, I've had my 02 390 stripped and replaced a leaking centre gasket.
All put back together ok, started second kick no worries.
Problem is, I'd forgotten to torque up the flywheel,
I heard it rubbing on the plastic cover, so I removed it to check the woodruff key was still in, put it back on, torqued it up and now I've no spark, I've checked bloody everything and am now pulling my hair out!
Anyone got any ideas
Oh yeah and now the wife has a face on because I've been in the garage all day. Great days huh?

Can anyone give me directions to the trial on Sunday at Milburn near Penrith?
Not sure where I'll be heading.
