Just moved up from beginner to novice. Trialing for a year, started just before my 63rd birthday
-
You bought one then Dave ? Let us know how you go on with it. I have been offered my mates 250 Beta that he bought last year but hasn`t ridden due to his back operation.
-
You`d be more than welcome Dave, we had a great 2 days there and I would say it was better having you there ........ us Southerners needed someone to take p*** out of LOL. Just kidding.
Fantastic venue and set up.
It`s our 50th anniversary 2 day in April .... give it some thought
Steve.

I`d agree with all that
Any tips on what I should be listening for ? And do you know which direction would enrich or weaken the mix ?

Located on the Isle of Wight, UK.
I`ll try the hotter plug ..... does that mean a lower number ? I am currently using BP5RES
-
That`s a bit of a problem, my nearest place to have that checked could be a few hundred miles and a boat ride away.
I may try to adjust the TPS and see if it improves.
-
Did a trial last week and while I was checking a section I left the bike ticking over. As I set off into the section the bike just bogged and cut out. I couldn`t restart the bike so I took the plug out to find it was very sooted up. This has happened before when bike was left ticking over to warm up. Even after cleaning the plug the bike is reluctant to start and needs a new plug.
Is there anything I can do to reset mixture ? as it seems to run too rich.
-
I had a running issue with my 2011 and took some advise from a poster on here about the TPS. I had the bike running and moved the tps very slightly until I thought it sounded cleaner. I locked it off and haven`t touched it since.
Might be worth a try if you are going to get it plugged in at Birketts anyway ?
Just mark the present position so you can return it if need be.

Propa geezer at 63, been into trials for a whole 3 months, also no need to worry about bits as have been wed for 39 years today.
Wife is on holiday in Spain with her mates.....no problem with my `bits` creating any excess baggage problems
-
Update : Had a fiddle today, moved the tps back and forth but didn`t seem to make much difference. Checked everything I could, wiring plugs etc. Eventually put a new plug in and it ran sweet as. Plug was only replaced a couple of weeks ago. Duff plug maybe ?
When it was running clean I went back to the tps setting and altered it slightly, it seems to run cleaner and the pickup is smoother. It always felt a bit like a carb engine with the choke not fully off.
Have to wait another 2 weeks before the next trial to see if it is cured unless I can get out for a practice somewhere beforehand.
Thanks for advise.

Is that the screw on the throttle position sensor ? Mine still has the factory (I assume) paint blob on it.
I am quite brave (foolish) when it comes to stuff like that but being a long way, and a ferry fare, away from a dealer that may have the diagnostics kit, I haven`t yet been that brave

Wow, great read. What a champion. That brought a tear to my old eyes.

Not used the bike for a couple of weeks, when it ran fine. Laid it up while I tended to the rear wheel bearing issue. Fixed that and thought I would just give it a lap or two round the garden.
Started on the third kick then coughed and died.......Aha ! No fuel. Topped up with fresh fuel and tried to start but no joy. Took plug out, which was a bit sooty but not wet. After many kicks I got it to fire but it wouldn`t catch and rev. Eventually got it to run but sounded rough and like it was misfiring. It cleaned up a bit when it warmed up but still feels lumpy and won`t tick over.
The only other thing that changed was I added 50ml of gear oil to bring it up to 400ml as mentioned in another thread.
Any ideas welcome.

Finally got around to fixing the rear wheel bearing issue. Had the hub machined to take a 6004 bearing and the original spacer/sleeve/bush affair cut down to make the spacer sleeve and the outer spacer. Works fine
-
New to the sport myself, only a few months in. Clutch drag seems to be very common, especially when cold. My Ossa is the same but when warmed up it`s fine. Getting neutral is also a `feel` thing on my bike, I usually just reach down with my hand and juggle it into neutral.
Fork seals are a consumable it seems, but it may be worth checking them with a seal cleaning tool before replacement.
All these things are part of the fun for me, learning about the bikes foibles, learning how to ride it, meeting people at trials that are only to pleased to give advise or help fix your bike.
-
I recently got my first trials bike at 63. Only baby sections but really enjoying it.
I think we may need our own section on the forum, so we can discuss what pills we are all taking, which bones ache the most after a ride etc etc
Did a club trial today, sunshine, fresh air and exercise Doesn`t get much better
-
Thanks for the replies guys, it seems ok at the moment, as I am repacking with grease on a regular basis, but I know it will be an issue in the future.
The mod to accept a proper bearing seems the way to go.
-
I am sure I still have the original setup, there is a bearing on the disc side, which I have replaced, but the chain side is a tube affair with a spindle that passes through it.
A conversion kit would be good if I could get one. Trials and Tribulations list it on their site but it`s saying sold out.
Would another wheel from a different bike fit ? Gasgas maybe ?
-
I have the 2011 280i and it appears to only run one bearing on the disc side, which I have replaced. I see there is a conversion kit to upgrade to a 2 bearing type but can`t find anyone that has it in stock.
Anyone know where I can obtain this kit at a reasonable cost with shipping to the UK ?

Recently started trials at the tender age of 62, can`t believe that when I see it written down as in my head I am only 22
Not had bikes for donkeys years as my missus hates them but she relented when I told her it was only for going slow and round a few twigs. Last off road bike was a KTM 250 crosser in the early `80`s
Already on my second bike, I started with a 250 Gasgas (`02) and the other day I bought an Ossa 280i (11/12)
The forum has already be a great source of information on the Ossa reference the starting issues etc. but I have already added a temporary diy battery fix till I can get a more professional kit.
Other issues were a very worn rear wheel bearing, which must have been the original. Ordered from Trials and Tribulations one day and arrived the next...great service. I will also fit a slow action throttle as the quick action one fitted feels really snappy and I feel it may get me into trouble.
Only done 2 trials up to now and only doing the baby sections
