The more i look at it, the more i like it, to me it's 80's RTL meet's Cota 315.
Though, i'm not sure on the shape of the rear fender (remind's me of Sherco's), it's the fuel injection i'm am more bothered about.

Next question :- WHEN CAN WE TRY ONE. Gawd, that bike looks the part !!!
Gaff.
-
I'm still hoping to go, but i won't know untill the day itself if i can.
Think i might just send of the entry form to give me abit more incentive.
Gaff.

Hi Stu, I had a play on one of these a couple of weeks ago, i was surprised just how flexible the engine was and how it handled for basically a standard bike, the steering reminded me of my RTL, just went where ever you pointed it.
Another friend is rebuilding one, and apart from plastics (ie, the original Red), he does not seem to be having many problems.
I was going to buy one myself, but other projects put paid to that.

GIZZA5. Thanks for that, i have only just found out that my bike was originally sold to a lad in the forces in late 88.
Yeah, i heard about the 350 Jumbo's "falling apart", i have also since learnt that there is alot more than a hint of SWM in the Rotax powered Armstrong Twin and Mono-shock bikes, namely the exhaust pipe IS an SWM with a little plate welded over the insignia, and the sub-frame also looks rather familier, maybe it's something to do with the Armstrong buy-up of SWM in the mid 80's.
Did you know that the MT500 military bike made by Armstrong was apparently designed by SWM, but with a few tweeks (later bikes were the Harley Davidson MT350 with disc brakes).
Gaff.
PS. Marky G, Thanks for the e-mail.
-
Hi Marky G, let us know if thay are for sale please, especially the double-disc one, Cheers.
MartinM, yep thats the one, identicle to mine except mine has CCM written where this one has Armstrong.
The picture also confirms to me that the bike did not have a chain-gaurd , where the few pictures i have are of the left side, trying to hide that SWM silencer i suppose? I wonder if that would have been John Lampkins Bike.
What a picture, just sold my RTL that was identicle to number 71.

Steve, Here is that i address that i said about :-
www.geocities.com/cotamontesa/
Have fun, i have not been right round it myself yet, plenty of Montesa history to peruse over.

Can anybody help with information and photo's on the bike that Armstrong developed in the mid-80's, as riden by John Lampkin ?
It had an Alloy frame and was a Mono-shock with a 240/280 Rotax engine, i know that around 65 were made and badged as Armstrong and Can-Am's in 1986, and a further 10 more were made as 240cc CCM's in 1988.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the speedy and positive responce.

Hi Richard, try looking on" www.ataq.qc.ca/musee.htm "it does not have all the models, but it should point you in the right direction as in actual model and year.

A close friend has a BSA C15 (roadster) and a Triumph Tiger Cub (trials) that have been garaged for a little while and intends to dig them out soon, and i'm thinking on getting my first Pre-65 (BSA B40 ???), question is, now that 4-star petrol is no longer available ! What do you use/recommend ?
Thanks.

t_wimp, just re-found this web address- www.schwarz-zweiradhandel.de -not sure if he is a Montesa dealer or even the importer into Germany, but he seems to know his Montesa's.
Let use know how you get on !

Right, just had a look on Eurosport for there daily veiwing and it has Kick Boxing on at 11:15 pm till Eurosport News at 1:15am.
But i am going to have a look just in case, as before now Eurosport has announced one thing, list something else then change it again on the night.
Also, tonight at 8 till 9 on Men and Motors, last weeks indoor round.

t_wimp, just checked my manual (for a 2000 spec) which states "Fuel/oil mixing ratio : 80:1".
I use high octane fuel (Shell Optimax) with fully synthetic oil.
Starting first kick without choke (Joke ist Witz) reminds me of a bike that i owned that had come over from Japan that was running to lean, which would indicate that your carb settings are wrong, i cannot help you any more on this, but i'm sure there are other good owners with more knowledge on this web-site that can, or even find a trials specialist in your area.
Also, i think your bike could be a 99' spec because it has Black fork stanchions (as opposed to chrome on 98's) and Black rear fender (Red on 98's).
Gaff.
-
Steve, yep recieved on the 18th (just checked my e-mail).
I know where the fender is, just a case off locating the tank badges, as soon as i get them altogether i'll give you a shout.
Gaff.
-
REV'er, the only real visual difference between a 2000 and a 2001 (excluding plastics and decals) is that rear brake caliper is exposed, where as 2001 onwards they are neatly tucked-in behind the swing-arm, the front brake is a two-pot and on the 2001 onwards is a four-pot.
I believe other than that it's all down to engine spec and frame geometry.

Just checked this weeks MCN, states "Saturday at 11:45pm".

Steve, i have an un-used Montesa 242 rear fender (which i believe is the same as a 330's) and a pair of tank badges knocking around that would suit. If your interested, e-mail me your number, pay for postage and you can have them.
Gaff.

Steve, click onto www.usmontesa.com and find "Montesa History" and your bike is there, 1985 look's like last of the twin-shock Monts, beautiful looking beast.
Anyway, have you tried Jeff Bungay at "Mainly Spanish" on (01425) 611287.
Good luck, keep us informed.
Gaff.

OTF, thanks for the info and link. A couple of peaple have suggested the Bantam Hub, and also a C25's, (which they -Sammy Millers- just happen to have in stock). I found this bike by accident, while looking around for a twin-shock 4-stroker (namely a Honda TLR200). But i think i should go one better and get a Pre-65 thats British.
Gaff.
Give my regards to Ilson, used to go drinking there when i lived in Nottingham a few years ago.
-
JayLael, never ridden a Gas Gas 321, but have tried a 03 Pro 300 which i liked, but my 2000 Montesa is the one for me at the moment.
Though i keep thinking on changing to a newer bike.
Gaff.
-
Just curiouse, isn't the 03/04 supposed to be softer off of the bottom than the 01/02, i tried a 01 last Sunday and hated every second of it. Where as i have tried a 98 (that has just had a total engine re-build) and found it to be softer than my 2000 (which has an extra Head-gasket to lower compression).

Could anybody tell me what to look out for on a 1964 BSA B40T.
The sprocket is welded to the hub, at first i thought this was a bodge, since found out that they were originally made this way, is this true ?
Would another hub (that takes a bolted sprocket) fit ? Ifso, which ?
Gaff.
-
Cheers guys, especially Ishy, the 85/86 i have seen has the oil-cooler rather crudely bolted to the out-side of the left down-tube, and not inside out of the way like yours. Is yours an 88 ?
I was thinking about putting one on my 87, if i can get hold of one !
Gaff.

Sandifords advised me to use Silkolene SRG75, that i replace every seven outings (ie, Trial meetings or practice sessions).
Also the Montesa/HRC clutch packs are terrible, so once it starts to drag and/or squeal replace with "Haven's" (also known as "Sureflex") pack.
