Glad there are others out there ‘in the real world’ that realise the truth behind some of the high prices of rusry remnants. You are made of stronger stuff than me, one look out of the bedroom window decides it for me. Snuggle up under the duvet or numb fingers and toes, no contest.

Bought myself a project Trials bike to keep me off the streets. This will be my third and I’m not sure whether to keep it or sell it as the price of older bikes is increasing. Not that I want to profiteer or anything but if the value keeps going up I would hate to ‘get it dirty’ so to speak. There must be quite a few people here that like to rebuild, restore their favourite competition bikes. Just like when you ride trials or whatever your sport is, the rebuilder, restorer is out in all weathers, ....in the shed, damp and cold huddled round a heater, pondering ? a miriad of problems, chrome or powder coat, paint as original. Should I mod it any, leave the footrests where the manufacturer put them, shall I slice the frame and get some steeper steering or should I just fit longer rear dampers? That’s an hour gone by and not even done the washing up or hoovering as instructed by the one that must be obeyed....ooh er! ?
NB Please feel free to continue and add content as you see fit, it’ll be interesting to see others take on their project bike and in general with the rise in value of older bikes that could be bought for literal pennies not too far back in time.?

It alway amazes me that when you see a collection of ‘superbikes’ parked up, the riders when they take their helmets off are ??? really quite old and probably drawing a pension or two. I have to include myself in the ‘quite old’ area but lucky enough to pass as younger so my other half says....bit too risky to argue! A bike dealer friend nodded in the direction of a Ducati 748 just pulling into the parking area of his dealership. Wait until he takes his helmet off my friend said. Man on Ducati stops, side stand gingerly down and he slides off bike standing all hunched the way you tend to in race leathers. This riders were yellow to match the bike (possibly even the colour of his skin). Well when he removed his helmet? I took a sharpe intake of breath?, 85 said my friend. In a minute his wife will be along to pick him up (not in the literal sense....he was standing up ok). Sure enough a little old lady arrives driving a Nissan Micra! His bike was in for service, can’t say he looked fit and healthy as he was still hunched up a bit with his leathers partly down. Riding bikes, any sort, must be good for you????

You have to hand it to Rossi, he may be older than most MGP riders, he may be amongst the tallest, but he can still cut the mustard and show most how it’s done. Good coverage from Channel 5 and the commentary plus Hodgkinson was very entertaining in my opinion.??

Those ‘ scorch marks’ were the tell tale signs that the outer bearing tracks had spun in the housing. Doesn’t take much dirt to lock up a bearing. Of course if the scorch marks you describe aren’t inside the main bearing housings then I’m wrong.

Hold it, hold it....aren’t Trials bikes supposed to run in the WET? Aren’t they built to go through puddles, ditches, rivers etc. What’s all the grief about washing the things. You’re meant to tidy up after each outing by carrying out planned preventative maintenance. Rubber glove finger on exhaust outlet. Plastic bag over air filter if possible. Wash off mud etc sensibly, don’t aim at wheel bearings, gearbox seals. Garden hose to soak mud and wash bike. Pressure washers are for non professional car cleaners, they just force the s**t in further, ruin transfers, and create lots of forum discussions????Play nicely now!

Yes?you did say ‘fat kid’ ?What if the rider was 150lb they’d be wanting softer springs, so the manufacturer goes for the middle ground. There you go son now you’re telling us “ I did say a I was a beach ball with legs”. Your words.
How about a spacer on top of the fork spring in each leg, you will need to experiment but start with 25 mm and maybe slightly thicker oil. As for the rear suspension unit, that depends on the make but a stronger spring will help. You might be able to swap the spring from one maker as they all close in size. Just a suggestion, spacers you can make or buy from good suppliers. Think you’ll find some useful info on this site. Alternatively approach a spring manufacturer, a pair of springs will not cost too much in the grand scheme of things.

Decompressor was supposed to make starting easier on 2 stroke, it also helped when going down hill or to slow engine when in the nadgery stuff. Decompressor on 4 stroke certainly was intended to help get big pistons over tdc for starting, but again riders used them to good effect in sections to tame the engine delivery in tight sections and hill ascents. Only other use was if you had a push start then the decompressor came in handy. My Sherpa has one and it does come in handy for tricky bits.

On the clutch case there is a bolt that has a slightly larger head to it, this is to grain the clutch oil. My photo shows the gearbox drain plug. Detent plunger boss is shown left of pic.

Drain plug on a Bultaco should be in middle half of timing side crankcase. Bash plate usually has a hole for access.

Without appearing to be weightistish.....why not consider putting your body on a performance regime and tune that up, before spending out on parts that may not work any better;) because you may still be carrying too many ounces!?Wish I could trim down a bit, it’s very easy to talk about getting fit, it’s another actually doing it. Once you are riding trials you may find that gives you the ‘kick start’ needed!

Select a socket that is an almost exact fit in the mouth of the front pipe, use and extension bar and clamp bar in vice, gently force pipe to take out bend. DO THIS CAREFULLY and you may find you don’t need sealer. If hear can be applied to bend area this will help. Sealant on the front pipe is not s good idea as any leaks will cause the temperature around exhaust port to rise and probably cause seizure of piston/rings. If you must use a ( considered a bodge) sealant get a high temperature spec from an automotive parts supplier, Europarts, Halfords....there are many about.

Lift front wheel clear of ground, second person spins wheel and looks to see if disc appears to wobble. This may be very slight, but any disc movement will be translated back through the hydraulics to the brake lever. Brake judder/ shudder caused by warped/ buckled disc, incorrect caliper to fork leg assembly, sticking brake pads causes binding. If bike is brand new, don’t beat about the bush get it back to the selling dealer. Haven’t dropped bike so the it has landed in a way to hit disc?

Sandwiches expensive in Spain, leave them out in the sun (remember that) for a day or two and strap them to the rims. They’ll outlast rubber! Anyone for mousse desert?
My mate lives in Arconnas and it’s very dry there, he rides a Suzuki RM 250 m/x on the tracks and knobblies just about cope. Be aware the Spanish cops were very active trying to stop illegal riding in the hills etc. That was last year so may have eased off.

Check crankcase breather is not kinked or fouled inside. PCV (positive crankcase valve) may be sticking. Either way it could explain idle dropping as fumes in crankcase build up making it harder for piston to travel down cylinder bore at low rpms. This problem would show up more as the breather passed less and less fumes. You’ll probably say that the engine oil is fresh but the breather(s) can be troublesome. The other possible cause is a fuel supply issue where delivery slows down and starves the engine, start with tank breather and fuel filter etc.
As jonnyc21 mentioned, tight...ish valve clearances will affect engine performance, but you would notice a drop in engine pull if this was the case. Hope you get to the cause and sort it.
