    Ninth Digit

The Wikipedia VIN number info did not make any sense with respect to my Montesa. I did some digging around and got this from a good friend who works at Honda. This makes more sense. Montesa Vin.pdf
  2. mcman I live in Irvine Ca. I have a 2014 Repsol I am trying to find out if I can get the stickers.

    Ninth Digit

From what I have been lead to believe the ninth digit VIN number represents the country that it is has complied with in the way of emissions etc. My ninth digit is an 8.
  4. If I remember correctly when these mapping switches started appearing on trials bike we could not feel any difference. We hooked up a timing light (to a Beta)and played with the switch. It was a long time ago but I think nothing happened with the timing changing until approximately 4000 RPM or high in the mid-range. Cheers BillyT

    Ninth Digit

Hey Montesa riders out there. Can you please tell me what your ninth digit VIN number is and from what country you are from? Mine (2014 Repsol) is a number eight and I am in the USA. I was told that the ninth digit states what country it is approved in ???? Thanks Guys
  6. I think the rider should attach the land-yard around one of their ankles. It would make you think twice about taking a dab as it would not only cost you dab but also kill the bike for a five........ Now........ am I serious or what
  7. Andy Thanks for the PDF pages. I am not sure yet on the rear action. I have Montesa riders all telling me I need this and that! I am trying separate what the older Montesa suspension was like compared to what it is like now. I have no way of comparing.
  8. Guys is anyone on here using V Mar linkages or another type/make. Is it really required on a 2014 Repsol? The ads all say it livens up the rear end! Thanks guys
  9. What is the general consensus on the best Titanium exhaust (header & silencer) for the 2014 Repsol? What are the pros & cons on Mitani Vs Termaggon (spelling)? How much weight savings could be expected? Thanks guys.

    Black Box

Update (part II) guys. Shedracer New, New fan relocation. As you can see it cradled quite nicely in this position between frame and PBT. The rear fender goes back on with no interference. The fan relay wire are also kept clear of the exhaust. This is the best I can see with the length of the wire loom. Do you see any issues with this mounting? Is it close enough to where you are suggesting? As for the bike itself. I live in California and made a trip to Canada at xmas to see my daughters and take care of another personal matter. In knew there was a new Repsol just landed in Canada (the first one in NA) so I jumped at the chance to go see it and bought it on the spot. I filled out the appropriate customs paperwork at the importer/dealer and drove it to the US Canada border. Declared it at the border and got it back safe and sound to California. I have to go get it registered at the DMV and take the MSO/Title to do so. Hopefully all my ducks are in order with the mounds of import paperwork I have. I also learned why no English manual and all the other little quirks as this is a Spanish bike pure and simple made for the Spanish market. As for cost, the Canadian importer has quoted $9K > $9.5K CDN for the standard Red/Black model and $10K > $10.5K CDN for the Repsol all dependent upon the Euro exchange rate. More to come as I learn more and be taught more by the Montesa forum experts.

    Black Box

Guys Thanks for the help......... I am in the USA (from Glasgow originally). There was no little aluminum bracket (for securing front brake hose with carbon bracket) in the box with the bike just some stickers, a carbon fibre front mudguard support and a Spanish owner manual. As for class of rider, old fart, has been, been there done that, should know better, heart bigger than my brain, class! I will check out the gearing and follow suite. Thanks Billy

    Black Box

Thanks jj65 The manual I received with the bike is all in Spanish so until I get one in Doric I am screwed. Keep the advice and suggestion flowing on this bike, it much appreciated. I put it on a stand, started it up, put it into gear, pulled the clutch in, and was able to stop the rear wheel from turning with just my fingers. This is a good reference for me for viscose coupling of the clutch and oil for future life with the bike. It came with (in the box) a carbon fibre front mudguard with the standard aluminum one attached. Why they did not install this confuses me. I was then told that the carbon fibre ones snap???? Is this correct? Even if I install it the is no provision to secure the front brake hose like the stock aluminum one? I feel like a fish out of water with this bike as it all new to me. But what a bike!!!!!

    Black Box

Thanks guys. So the consensus seems to be a the fan relay. No scratches as yet, the marks you see are from shipping tape residue. Thanks

    Montesa Newbie

I did it, I picked up a 2014 Montesa Repsol. Lots of questions for the Montesa experts on here in the next few weeks. I want to get a Titanium exhaust but not sure which one is best?
  17. Try putting a heavy soap mixture around the base and look for air leaks. I do not think it is as big a problems as you think. The cylinder down there is double walled with large water passages. If the leak gets really bad you will notice a drop in the coolant level. The chances of an air leak are not really that serious at the base as there is so much coolant around. If the base gasket is really leaking then it is also leaking water from one port to another and maybe into the crank case? I would be more concerned about water going into the crankcase than air getting in the crank/piston area. But right now I don't think there is really anything to be concerned about. I do know that riding in dry dusty places like the desert attract dust and make it stick to the slightest damp areas such as the base, clutch cover, etc. What may have been a slight leak and then you tightened up the nuts (witnessed by the marks on the nuts in the pictures) yet the area was still a little damp attracting dust? Go ride, keep your eye the coolant level and pay attention to erratic idle RPM's. Cheers BillyT

  19. I think it is a preload adjuster.
  20. Is there any official word in how Honda/Montesa is achieving the "Less Engine Braking Effect" in the 2014? Is it by the cam's, electronically, a valve, etc?

    No Filter

"If the bike had no air filter the air fuel mixture would have been lean." This statement confuses the hell out of me. How does no air filter make a bike run leaner? I think I will sit back and watch the fun and games on this one.
  22. No problem, No Foul, No issue. Welcome back......... LOL Nows lets argue about something that we don't agree about maybe "which brand of bike is best". Cheers BillyT
  23. Mokwepa When you put up a post with a title "Lets Get One Thing Straight! (Sprockets)" Who was your intended audience with this terse bold statement? I don't recall any discussion, argument about gearing that needed such a strong title. You strongly gave an answer to a question that was not asked. I agree age does not mean wisdom, I think I stated that riders who have been around the sport for a very long time do not need someone new to the sport telling the how to gear their bikes. While you may have been around dirt bikes in general for a long time all of that dirt bike stuff does not necessarily transfer over to trials bikes or vise versa. Gearing a bike up for a beginner may end up confusing them. Why? Riders start of with poor technique, it is the norm. The tend to use speed to get up obstacles rather than technique. Good technique and torque (slow torque) are a trials riders best friends. Gearing a bike up for first gear leaves the rider no where to go when they want to go slow or fast. Have you considered this, maybe your dad should have learnt to ride in second gear? According to your theory that would have been like gearing the bike up. When he needed torque he could have then shifted down to first. Just my thoughts! Respectfully
  24. Only if you grind three off the back as well ........ LOL
  25. YEP..... I know the feeling Rob. A guy new to trials telling trials riders that have been around the sport since Bou was a baby correction make that Dougie Lampkin (and there are many on this site reading this post) that how we gear our bikes is all wrong!
