  3. Hi Pete, Welcome back to the mad world of trials. I was like you in that I turned my back on trials when I turned 17 and then came back ten years ago when I was looking for something to do with my son. Ten years on and it has taken over the hole family. We run a club with our son competing our daughter riding for fun and now my wife joining me in an outfit for some sidecar trials. You will never meet a nicer bunch of folk than you will at trials. People who are always ready to lend a hand or help you out no matter what your problem. Paul
  4. Hi looking in the new 2014 ACU handbook. It states under TSR 1 c After their 16th birthday a rider may compete as an Adult. and a few lines down. "Whilst riding as an Adult, Capacity restrictions do not apply", so as long as you enter as an Adult and pay the Adult entry fee you can ride your 250.
  5. I have a 2011 Beta Evo. As far as I remember the standard bars are 4.5" rise. I'm 5'9" and changed mine for 5" rise bars having felt the same (Now very happy) Jitsie do fat bars in 4.5", 5". 5.5" and 6" rise (around £70.00) Or you could go for Apico's fat bar riser kit ( around £25.00) hope this helps.
  6. You need to join a club! you cannot be a member of the ACU unless you are in a club that is affiliated to the ACU. When you join a club they will give you a unique ID number starting with 14------. you need to put this in your application.
  7. I would suggest that you talk to your local club and ask if they would be willing to allow outfits. Here in England it costs no more to include sidecars on the permit and at our club we run them on our Dead Easy and Easy routes. Any increase in insurance costs are covered by the increased entry fee. (around £3.00 more than a solo entry fee) So for a club its a win,win situation! We have a small club down here in East Anglia that my wife and I run and we got interested in sidecars for exactly the same reason(She was fed up of doing all the paper work only for it to be expected that she then stand and observe all day) When we first included sidecars at our trials at the beginning of last year, we had one turn up. At our last trial of 2013 we had five and we have another member building one now and another one hunting for a chair. As a side note. We have also seen an increase in solo entry's over the year and I think some of it is down to the buzz caused by having the outfits running.
  8. 2nd February is the date of the next Norfolk & Suffolk Junior Mcc trial to run sidecars. The venue is Stonehill pit, Gt Hockham, Thetford IP24 1SD Sign on from 09:30 am for a 10:30 am start. Entry fee for sidecars is £18.00 and entry's closes At Start. Again sidecars will be run on two routes with one being dead easy to encourage new/beginner crews. If you would like more info phone me on 01502 568252
  9. I used the taper rollers from Pyramid parts on my Model 49. Getting the old bottom race off my yoke was a pain. Had to resort to a blow lamp and brute force in the end and made a pair of steel fine wedges to drive in under the dust shield/race As the hole bike was being rebuilt and going for powder coating I wasn't to concerned about the paint. I refitted the bottom dust shield to stay as close too the look of original. But if you need a new one can be got from Bultaco UK. The only down side to these bearings is the fact that they are slightly taller than standard. So the yokes land up slightly further apart. So the bottom yoke doesn't quite line up on the knurled part of the leg. As can be seen in the photo.
  10. Is it made of GOLD???
  11. I have the slim line tank from Shed works on my Model 49. Great tank, Great service. I would certainly use them again if I needed another tank.
  12. First and MOST important thing, Is the seller the owner and willing to let you see a photo ID with an address on it. If not walk away!
  13. How do you make a small fortune building trials motorcycles? Start off with a big fortune!
  14. I know my wife will probably kill me for telling you this. but ten years ago when she was having a go on our son's Gas Gas 50, she crashed and got her left leg court up between the back of the frame and the front of the back wheel. By the time I had run across the field to help the back wheel had made a bit of a mess of her leg! She hasn't worn shorts, skirt or a swim suit since that day and it has taken until this year to get her into a sidecar let alone on a bike! If these Lanyards save just one child from something like this I for one will be a happy man!
  15. First off this is just youth bikes that it's compulsory for. Here in the UK at ACU events it is the clerk of the course's responsibility to make sure that bikes ridden by youth entrants are fitted with a WORKING kill switch! Just the other week I witnessed a crash. That when the bike came down off a step and landed on the rider, his natural instinct was to push it away and he very nearly lost his hand in a racing back wheel. A lanyard kill switch would of stopped the engine/wheel before it landed on him! At the end of the day the lad had a torn glove, massive bruising to his hand and wrist and was quite shaken up as he came to realize just how close a thing it was. The lanyards are quite short and I tuck mine under my palm/thumb so it doesn't hang down where it can be caught by twigs/bushes and such.
  16. This was first put forward in March or April 2013. With the ACU saying that lanyard kill switches were highly recommended on youth bikes for 2013 and would be compulsory from 01/01/14. As I hadn't seen any more news regarding this I contacted ACU house. Here is a copy of the email I received from the ACU to my inquiry about this matter in December. hope it helps! Hello Paul, Yes I can confirm that it will be compulsory from 2014. A summary of Handbook changes will be circulated to Centres shortly but the information may not filter down to Clubs very quickly so a reminder at your event would be most helpful. 17. Just a quick up date, I have now fitted an even stronger spring to the rear shock of our outfit. At a trial last weekend the rear just sagged more and more as the day progressed. Although free mince pie's were on offer and may of been a factor
  18. I think dilbert93's statement that he drives a BIG 4X4 is a give away! Proper towing truck! towing limit of three to three and a half tonnes (as with Land Rovers) and a nose wight limit of 170 kg. NOT a Mondeo's 70 kg. Also an unbraked three bike trailer is probable getting very close to a small hatch back's unbraked towing limit. Unless you insure a trailer / caravan separably No towed load is insured! Your car/truck insurance only allows you to tow. NOT cover the tow! I found this out to my cost when I had some prat run into my caravan when I was stationery a few months back.
  19. Hi dilbert93, Yes you can! I have a Land Rover Defender 110 and use a Dave Cooper rack for my son's Beta Evo and then tow a D,C two bike trailer for my sidecar outfit. On a car with a better turning circle there may be a clearance issue on full lock. But not with a big 4x4. I have even towed my caravan with the bike on the rack. Paul
  20. My lad had a rev 80 for quite a few years. All I can suggest is carry out the clutch clean up mod's pinned at the top of this thread. It makes a huge difference to the 80 as well. Also use a good quality gearbox oil and change it regularly. Bleed the clutch system until all the fluid is changed for fresh and make sure there is a little bit of play in the clutch lever adjuster screw. Clutch drag will make finding neutral very hard. If the after market gear lever you have is bendy why not replace it with the standard one from Beta?
