  1. By 1981, another round of economic unrest in Spain began to hinder motorcycle manufacturers. Strikes and a shrinking market left Montesa as the only major motorcycle concern in the country; however they were in need for a major influx of capital in order to continue to survive. A loan from the government and shares sold to Honda (to establish a European manufacturing base for their commuter bikes) helped production continue. Indeed, one of the government's stipulations was that Honda would guarantee that production would not stop. Honda was prepared to stockpile trials bikes and to sell them off at a loss in an effort to reach Europe's more profitable market and to bypass restrictive import tariffs. In July 1985, a major reorganization took place and a large amount of money from Honda was received. By then, only two trials models were offered and the workforce had dwindled to a mere 152 employees. A year later, there were further financial moves between Honda, Spain's government and the Permanyer family, leading to Honda buying the majority of the family's remaining shares. Honda now had an 85% holding and spent another $5 million on modifying and updating the factory. Montesa was still active in World Trials competition throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. Even though reduced to only offering one model, the Cota, such riders like former World Champion Eddy Lejeune and Andrew Codina rode the bike to good results in the mid-'80s. In 1992-93, the liquid-cooled Cota 311 was produced; this was to be the last "real" Montesa. In 1994, a new model, the 314R, was introduced. This model featured an HRC Honda powerplant with many other components from Honda. Montesa-mounted Marc Colomer won the World title in 1996 and the 315R followed in early '97. The 315R had a run of 7 years, taking Dougie Lampkin to many world championships, and was replaced by the technically advanced four-stroke Cota 4RT in 2005
  2. The thing you might think about. Are you cleaning most sections? Are you going back afterwards and cleaning the sections? Besides winning, trials is just many steps of learning basic control and different techniques. Sometimes jumping up too quick can slow down your progress from not mastering the basics. I`ve also have advised people to quit wasting their time and move up today. Usually the ones that need to move up fast are in their teens. Each case is different. Winning is not really any indication other than you out rode the competition. Always remember to keep it fun.
  3. It`s very hard to say with the econo as each bike could be different. Ever notice there is not a parts book for an econo? Rims could be different, swingarms and brakes. Steel steering stem. It all adds up.
  4. Everybody likes to see old iron saved. But Robbie sounds young and very inexperienced. The bike is missing a lot of parts. No piston? Telltale sign of a bad bottom end. If it was a later model Bul maybe. But this is a money pit for a young person. The Dealer and everyone giving encouragement. Not me!
  5. That`s a smart kid. So far our kids with Oset`s do not transition well to the gas bikes. But the #1 thing is the kids on gas keep riding all day.
  6. The tanks pretty otherwise the bikes a beast. Buy something shiny for the TY. Funny thing is I just started working on one today. But I am fixing it up to sell.
  7. You bought a pile of ***** used bike missing parts and you still bitch about a poor purchase. The Beta techno was a trouble free bike. This guy is asking about a Cabo rep. Which is a great bike in the right hands. Just a little more bike than most people need. You will love it!
  8. It also could be the `on` position runs out early. Ride with it on reserve all the time. Down side is you would be out of fuel. I did this on the Beta Techno`s because the CDI could break the plastic fuel tap in the on position on a hard drop off. I always ran it on reserve.
  9. Nice project you have again. Probably need to custom make the stickers. Hopefully Billy T. will be along to help out as he brought them into the states.
  10. Slide in backwards? Missing parts for the air screw or idle?
  11. It would make excellent spectator viewing if the chair lift was working! We have a local event at a Ski resort every year. The chairs going up and down makes the event!
  12. Good thing I have not ridden the Nationals lately. Nowadays with the no vulgar language rule, I would five half the sections from my mouth!
  13. I`ve talked to myself for years, just in my mind. Now that I`m older I find myself talking out loud, usually at inopportune times. On the other hand, I`ve always talked to myself out loud while walking the section and holding my AIR bars complete with sounds.
  14. That will just confuse him as it is a different technique. That guy is actually putting pressure on the left bar to turn right and then changing pressure to the right bar. Totally different riding.
  15. Sounds like you have yourself all twisted up. The weight should be on the left foot, so the right should move freely. Also it sounds like you are over exaggerating the move (which I am sure that was how you were taught) and now you feel like a pretzel. Keep at it, but you should be loose and free. Good luck.
  16. You can fix that in five minutes. Warm the bike up plenty good. (15 minutes) Pull up against a tree in fourth gear. Give it hell for 5 seconds or so. Ride around a little and repeat. Like I said before the finger height is out of specs. Your new rider will take forever to break them in.
  17. That`s pretty cool! I hope I make the 60 year mark.
  18. That was back when they came with Paoli`s. Beta and Scorpa had the same.
  19. Just use a small fanny pack. Also a good place for a bottle of water. I usually use a small one, but also have ready a large one prepped to go!
  20. It`s all about timing. In the second example you are using the bike to get the rear suspension to work. You can do it the same with the first example, but the timing has to be more precise and you actually have to use your legs, or hit the log lower.
  21. Bou`s also tough as nails. In Tennessee last year he crashed hard on a rock he had ridden in the past. (The no-stop rule made this section way harder than before)He landed his back on a pointy boulder. I assumed they would cart him off as it was a terrible blow. It took about ten-fifteen minutes, but his minders helped him back up and got him going. He had trouble in that section all weekend.
  22. Time is the only way to beat Bou. He`s still got another 5 years in him. So the up and coming thirteen year olds is where to find the one that can beat Bou.
  23. We`ve probably have 4000 active riders. But at least 20 times that as far as trials bike ownership. A funnier comparison is we have about 120 in my state, and we are larger land wise than the UK.
  24. So if the plug is too wet it will not spark. In that case it is flooded on the lower end and needs cleared out.
