I have a friend who just switched from a honda cr85r (yes 85!) to a beta rev 3 125 and he loves it. Me and him ride about 3 times a week and he is enjoying it much more than his MX bike. In my opinion the best bikes are either beta, montesa or scorpa. Beta are known to have excellent reliablity and smooth power delivery (bar the 270) and in my opinion are great for a beginner. I ride a 1999 beta techno 200 and love it. Montesa are also great bikes from what I have heard but the new 4 strokes are expensive so the older montesa 315's may be a better choice. Don't know what they are like to ride. Someone told me the new 315's are a lot more of an experts bike than the older ones. Scorpa are also meant to be excellent for beginners and they do a range of both fourstrokes and twostrokes. The other two big manufacturers are gasgas and sherco. I have ridden a 250 gasgas txt pro and it is the nicest feeling bike I have ever ridden. Really light and probably the easiest to hop. However I have heard loads of reports that gasgas are very unreliable. Sherco are like gasgas in that they are almost as light and almost as nice to ride. They are also marginly more reliable than gasgas but still not up there with beta/scorpa/montesa. I used to own a 2004 sherco 290 but I ended up selling it for my beta as I felt that I could tackle obstacles with much more confidence on the beta and the power was not excessive. Many people probably disagree with me and probably prefer gasgas or sherco and me saying beta/montesa/scorpa are the best bikes may not go down well! I have been riding for 4 years so I have had some experience although I am not a quick learner and I wouldnt be at the level of a lot of the people who use this site. Hope this helps! David

Ok its been a long time since i've been on here and I can now see that no-one obviously cares about the BHP of trials bikes for good reasoning. When I was getting a new bike back then I basically wanted a rating to compare the power of various bikes and BHP was the measurement I was familiar with. The reason I wanted this rating was because I thought what I needed was a much more powerful bike. Anyhow since then I bought a Sherco 290 rode it for a couple of months then sold it because I then figured it wasnt actually power that I needed. I then bought a 2000 beta techno 200 which has served me well ever since and has stacks of power for the type of riding I am used to. The beta seems much more smooth and far lighter than the old yamaha yet isnt overpowered like the sherco was for me.

Sorry to bring up the topic again here but could anyone tell me what bhp a 2004 sherco 2.9 would be. I'm kinda half dissapointed here cause I was thinking the power output would have been higher seeing a cr85r scrambler is 25 bhp in only 85 cc!

After riding it for about a week now I am slowly getting used to it and I am getting a slow action throttle too so that should definately help. Thanks for the advice everyone. Putting on six stone is always an option to
-
Ok thanks for the advice everyone i'll have to get some of these things done and then I will be able to ride my new bike with confidence at last
-
I checked and I have the white throttle so I think I will buy the black one and that would be more suitable for an amateur like me I never thought the day would come were I would be looking to make my bike less powerful. I will have to look at some of those other things you said as well as a lot of practice. Is it completely unheard of unexperienced 17 year olds riding 2.9's or should it be allright?
-
interesting How do I know if I have a fast or slow action throttle?
-
Oops maybe i should have posted it in sherco section is it the moderators that move it? I dont think i do have a slow action throttle but that sounds like a good idea for me. Any ideas how much that would cost roughly?

I have just bought an 2004 sherco 2.9 ex works bike but I have now came across the problem of having too much power as I am only 17 and only wiegh around 10 stone and am not great at trials. I used to ride a yamaha ty250 (pinky) and when getting an new bike I just went with my instinct and bought the biggest cc and most power I could find. Allthough now I am realising the extra power could get me into more trouble than it could get me out of. I'm not sure whether I should keep the bike and try and get used to the power or sell it on and buy a 200 beta rev 3 or something like that. Any advice would be appreciated!
-
Yeah ill just tell him to repack it then. Thanks!
-
Cheers sounds like its gonna be a good job then It'll be some upgrade from my pinky for sure. I'll have to be careful because im not that used to the extra power of a modern bike and im only 10 and a half stone Thanks for the advice

I just bought a 2004 sherco 2.9 Could anyone give me there general opinion on the bike and also tell me what is the petrol/oil mixture i should be using?
-
On my pinky the clutch sticks too but if you put down the back brake and rev i find it frees it up quickly. I think its quite a common problem with the pinkys but then what would i know
-
Yeah the beta's definately sound good to me. From what I have gathered gasgas's are good to ride but ull constantly be buying parts for them Would you say thats true? Sorry for all the questions here

My dad has just took the exhaust off my yamaha ty250s exhaust to unchoke it a bit in an attempt to gain more power but he isnt sure whether he should repack it or not. Do any of you guys know how important it is to pack it and whether or not it will effect anything other than the noise suppression?
