Question for the technically minded.
What is the effect of play in the rear suspension linkage and the shock mountings? Does it affect grip, or just delay when the power kicks in?
Does it matter after the chain has taken up slack?
And lastly, what is a normal amount of play with everything working correctly?
Thanks in advance.
Looking at a few specs for new bikes, geometry doesn't seem to be something they promote. Maybe it can vary a lot due to soft suspension. I'm just hazarding a guess. Anyway, they're not like a super bike where geometry can make a big difference if its wrong.
Thanks b40rt, all info appreciated. I did use the choke to start it, but didn't need it on for as long. And I always turn the petrol off when its parked. Bearings, bushings and brakes done, so time to get the cobwebs off me now!
Fan seems to be kicking in a bit more often than I remember on my bike (been a few years). Would this be a sign of a head gasket on the way out? Not boiling or emptying the rad, but the inside of the rad cap looks a bit dirty.
Update on the spark plug issue. Ran the bike round the yard yesterday evening for a while. No high revs really. Checked the plug (5) this evening when cold. Looks like its burning a lot cleaner than the 6 that I took out. Started easier too. Didn't really need to use the choke at all, and it was cold. Hope this info is of some use to someone else.
Thanks for your input lads. I changed it to the 5 plug today. Haven't ran it yet on that one, but the 6 I took out looked a bit dark. It seems not be running hot enough for the 6. I'll keep it in the toolbox, and check after a bit of running to see if the 5 is getting too pale. But I would agree that there couldn't be that much difference between them. And everything else looks fairly standard on it, now that I've cleaned all the crap off the bike.
Standard spark plug on my 95 bike is a 5. But looks like a previous owner has put a 6 plug in it. Any obvious reasons for this, or would it just be a mistake.
Ok, got the bearings sorted today. Different collared spacers each side were confusing me.
Different question. Is there some sort of internal collar between the needle roller bearings in the swing arm where it connects to the linkage?
Ah, that would make more sense. It's a '95. Are they meant to be side by side, tight against each other. And the centre spacer has 2 different length collars. Which would be on the sprocket side?
And thanks for answering so quick.
Hi Folks,
Silly question of the day. Knocked out the old wheel bearings on my old Gasgas. Opened the packet of 4 new ones. All correct size (4 of them). But I seem to have 5 old ones on the floor. Did 3 bearings come out of the rear wheel? Is there 2 on the sprocket side? Or am I dreaming. Circlips were both in place on the wheel before I started.
New to working on a Trials bike, but is there an extra bearing to take the sprocket force, like the sprocket carrier bearing on a road bike?
