I've messed around with the rebound and damping on my 2005 4RT to the point where the front and rear are out of match.. the rears a pogo stick and the fronts a mess (its just been serviced with new heavier oil so i need to re-adjust.
Which way do i turn to increase, which to decrease (clockwise or anticlockwise)? I know im a muppet....
Whats the factory standard so i can get it back to that and start all over again?
Cheers

I hate this sort of do-gooder post.
The guy asked about the restrictors in his exhaust.. he didnt say "please show me the light on my responsibility to humanity". Its about choice dude, if he wanted a debate about the pro's and cons of noisy bikes, he'd start a post on the that subject.
Rather than "hi-jack the thread" why dont you start up your own thread and tell us all how we can avoid upsetting the neighbourhood and we can chose to read it or not read it.... and avoid preaching on other peoples posts?
FFS...

Hey guys,
Noticed that i was skidding the front a lot and realised my fork is now a pogo stick... the "muck" on the right fork tube was actually fork oil bugger.
I'm hoping its just a case of repalcing the oil seals and the dust caps, refilling the forks with oil and i'll have my forks back?
Is this an easy job or one for a dealer to sort out?
Next bit is the fork oil...
I'm a big lad.. 18 stone dry so i have lots of pre-load and damping to stop the front bottoming out... it sinks way too easily due to my weight i think.
The standard oil is 10 weight... im 18 stone so thought i'd up the fork oil to 15 weight?
Will this will allow me to wind off the damping and preload a bit? Am i right that this could help with the bottoming out issue?
Anyone have an ideas?

Hey guys,
Time to get a new chain and sprockets. I have a 42 tooth rear and im not sure about the front.
Anyone recommend a good ratio? Will i need to remove links from the chain?

Defo no smell - in fact i checked the coolant level and it was still full... looks like a case of "they all do that sir".... will change oil more often going forward. Thanks!

Guys,
I use the Putoline 4 stroke oil in both engine and clutch without problem.
When i emptied both this weekend having done a quick blast first, the clutch oil came out light grey! Smelt like oil, felt like oil, just looked "weird". It wasnt sludgy like how i'd expect it to look if water got in so im confused. I've probably used this set of oil for longer than normal as the bike hasnt had much use over winter...
Do i have a problem or is it normal?

You checked the air filter and box for water? A blocked air filter would start it coughing?

I've got a new 6mm bashplate ready to fit, bought off H&D racing on fleebay. Looks like a great improvement
The instructions suggest tightening the front bolts on a bit, then lining up the rears.
Thing is, the angle of the front of the plate is such that the rear bolts are about 1/2 and inch off.
The 6mm metal doesnt want to bend at all.
How on earth do i bend it in to place?
How should i angle the bike when working on it? Lie it on its side?
Any ideas guys?

Wicked thanks guys.... i guess its just normal and im not looking at a new gearbox which is nice.

P.S. I find that starting the bike in gear when its hot takes a lot more effort than when its in neutral...
-
If i ride in a trial (hang around in sections waiting to go) and the bike gets "hot" i ALWAYS struggle to get the bike in neutral.
The symtoms are - i ride to the next section. i switch the bike off in gear and leave it againt a tree to walk the section (it needs to be in gear so it doesnt run off ).
I come back to the bike.
I try and get it in neutral.
It will kind of get there - but jump back in gear if i roll the bike forward a foot.
I try again.
I cant get it in - so resort to trying to start in gear which usually takes a good few minutes of bashing on the gear lever.
I noticed on someone elses 4RT that it was difficult as well so assumed its a case of "they all do that sir".
Do they all do that? if not - what's going on? Its a 2005 4RT

Looking at that map and zooming in - you go under what looks like a railway bridge (if your coming from west) and its near a farm on the right - is that correct?
Hope to see you sunday

I have the alpinestars and they wont close properly - so let water in. If you have "thick" calves and ankles - find something else

Hey guys,
Sorry if this sounds like boasting - i realise im a beginner rider
Have been riding for a year now. Have completed most of my local trials clubs "white routes" this year. I'm now consistently in the top 5 and usually find most sections easy - with the odd section that i struggle with.
The difference in skill requirements between "white" and the "easy" route seems large. When im practising i tend to practise "easy" sections (e.g. ones you'd never see on the white route).
I'm not ready for the "yellow" easy route yet (i know different clubs have different names for routes - we have have white, easy then expert). I can do bits of each of the easy section but struggle to clean them.
I'm scoring around 5 - 15 marks on the white route. I see people doing the easy route with scores of 120-130. I figure these people would probably say the white route wouldn't present a challenge for them.
In your experience will i learn more perfecting the white route or struggling in the easy?
In terms of my development for this year - at what point do i say "bugger it im going up a class"?
Any advice appreciated

Cheers m8 will have a look into it

Hey guys,
Just fitted new tyres - and when putting the rear wheel back on i noticed that even with the bolts tight, if you grap the tyre and push/pull you get a minute amount of "play" - you can see that its around where those two metal rings that fit between the frame and the wheel itself.
Is this normal or have i got a bearing on its way out? I assume you can get them fixed or is it a new wheel?
Cheers

Oh and by the way Andy - as your being so pedantic.... please read the title of my post and note that theres a ":-)" in there... that means i was "smiling" - as in laughing...
Oh and by the way again - i actually said "I was completely new to trials before i bought a Montesa 4RT on the recommendations of owner and people on this site about a year ago.
"
So i said i'd bought the bike on recommendation - from owners and people on the site. I make no reference to if its a good bike or not. I was happy with their advice - its a cracking bike
So maybe YOU should get your facts right before going off on a cruisade

Jesus...... i can see im gonna get banned here LOL
I READ the forums and the posts on the subject of 4RT's before i bought the bike
You can do that without posting
Dude you need to lighten up.... believe it or not im really, really not blaming anyone for me buying a bike i love to bits.... i'm just laughing that my bikes a bit of an animal and that i only realise that now. I think your "experts" on this forum can probably not remember back to the first day they rode a bike. I've had that experience in the past year.
Thats it - no complaints - just a fun post on laughing at MYSELF
Maybe you should try that sometimes
Jza
-
Sorry mate - did you actually read my post - or just use it as a chance for a snipe LOL
I don't have anyone to blame as i have nothing to complain about. I'm merely laughing at the fact that i went in with my blinkers on as a "rookie" and only NOW one year on realise the true facts...
My last line about recommending a 4RT says ""yes, but try a 2 stroke first" - i'm actually saying exactly what you've said... albeit without attempting to point score as you've clearly attempted
LOL

I've never ridden anyone else's bike until yesterday. I was completely new to trials before i bought a Montesa 4RT on the recommendations of owner and people on this site about a year ago.
I have no problems with this advise - its a cracking bike and i wouldnt swap it now for anything. I got on with it well from day one, always found that the power tended to dominate the proceedings, i still do.... thats a 4 stroke i figured
I'm used to its manners now... so i guess im past the beginners phase.
But...
I rode a Beta 250 yesterday...
HOW EASY!!!!!!!
Jeez guys..... no wonder i struggled at first!!!
I'd just thought that all those people who asked why i'd bought an experts bike as a first bike were just jealous... but i get it now....
It's not a beginners bike really is it LOL
It seems like NOTHING happens on the Beta unless you want it to... you open the throttle at low speeds and it just trundles along nice and smooth. To shoot off into the distance... you have to tell it to with your wrist and be agressive on the throttle. I agree that things get more lively up the rev range, but theres none of the "jees hold on guys here we go" feeling i can get with the 4RT if im a tiny bit off with my throttle control. The Beta is SO much more beginner friendly.....
Fact is that on my 4RT with a "normal" map, you only have to blip the throttle and you are on one wheel. I realise now im actually using the clutch on the 4RT to "power down" the agressive delivery at slow speeds. You only have to breath on it to be jumping up things. I can see that for an expert thats what you need - instant grunt everywhere.
No wonder people who have had 2 strokes go for the "soft" map when they switch to a 4RT!!! It must be like getting on a rocket ship!!!
Then there's the steering. Mines nice and pointy no complaints - but the Beta feels like it has a steering damper on it in comparison!! If i hit a rock on the 4RT the handlebars react, and ive gone over those bars cause i wasnt holding on hard enough a few times. This is no where near as prominant on the Beta - it just carries on like its on auto pilot. As a beginner i'd have found it so much easier to live with.
If anyone who's new to the world of trials asks you if a 4RT is a good beginners bike.... the answer should always be "yes, but try a 2 stroke first"... cause honestly - the bikes a brute compared to a 2 stroke The two strokes a pussy in comparison ([/flame suit on]).
LOL Now i get it (one year on) LOL

If only the repsol did all that - wouldnt that be great
-
Sorry i didnt post this yesterday.
Saw the new 4RT at the Dirt Bike show on sunday.
What a poor effort by Montesa!!!!
They havent finished the bike - its like a half effort...
See the Gas Gas's - all nicely co-ordinated red and black - look fab IMHO. Someones spent time getting it right.
Then see the half baked 4RT... they must have spent 2 mins thinking it through...
"lets paint the frame shiny black... then do f**k all else to blend the frame in".. jeez what an ugly bike.
"lets not bother with forks, fork clamps, engine cover, brake protector, exhaust shield, air box and exhaust cover.... or even the handlebars for that matter... lets leave them all standard"
"but at least we did the bike stand!!"
If your buying one - plan to spend a few hundred on black carbon fibre making it look reasonable.... and i didnt thnk the black paint looked like it'd take a pounding before the silver metal shines through....
What a shame
